GDC 2014: Missing Worlds Media upgrades from UE3 following official engine release
Missing Worlds Media is using Epic's recently released development tech Unreal Engine 4 to power its new MMO City of Titans.
The developer got the greenlight to make the superhero MMORPG after successfully doubling its crowdfunding goal on Kickstarter and bringing in $678,189.
The developer had been using Unreal Engine 3, but following the successful crowdfunding campaign the studio entered discussions with Epic to licence UE4.
City of Titans is one of the first titles to be announced following Epic'sofficial release of Unreal Engine 4 (https://www.develop-online.net/news/epic-targets-indies-with-ue4-subscription-deal/0190695) to all developers under a new $19 plus royalties subscription model.
“After our Kickstarter, we were offered the opportunity to use Unreal 4 going forward,” said Missing Worlds Media president Nathaniel Downes.
“We are very excited about the project, and have been working with the new engine since December. It has been amazing seeing our city starting to come to life, thanks to the versatility and flexibility it has to offer.”
City of Titans lead developer Chris Hare added: “Since we completed our Kickstarter, we had a lot of people in our community asking why we weren’t posting up screenshots or showing them videos of what we were working on - well, now they know why.
“We managed to use some of our expanded success on an expanded license, so the world they helped us to fund will be even more vibrant and thriving than they had imagined. And our backers dream big. It’s been a long road, but Epic has been a great partner to work with. We couldn’t ask for better friends in the business.”
