The character outlines which distinguish the 3DS (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/nintendo-3ds/games/11495/nintendo-3ds/) version ofSmash Bros. 4 (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/nintendo-wii-u/beat-em-up/12297/smash-bros-4/) from its Wii U (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/nintendo-wii-u/games/12079/wii-u/) counterpart can be disabled at will.
Director Masahiro Sakurai posted a picture on Miiverse (https://miiverse.nintendo.net/posts/AYMHAAACAADMUKlpGiFjOQ) on Tuesday comparing the handheld version with and without the thick black lines.

"They also give off a different impression in 3D, so customize the look however you like."
Nintendo has kept quiet on what non-graphical differences, if any, players will find between the two versions of the game. It has revealed several new maps, like a Tomodachi Collection (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/453909/smash-bros-4-adds-tomodachi-collection-stage/) and Animal Crossing stage (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/452944/smash-bros-4-3ds-screenshot-reveals-animal-crossing-stage/), and given the nod to several veteran and rookie characters.
Confirmed characters returning to the game include King Dedede (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/444648/king-dedede-confirmed-for-smash-bros-4/), Luigi (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/423165/gallery-luigi-confirmed-for-smash-bros-4/),Captain Olimar (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/418832/pikmin-and-olimar-confirmed-for-smash-bros-wii-u/), Sonic (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/431739/sonic-joins-smash-bros-wii-u-and-3ds-roster-trailer/), Princess Peach (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/429080/smash-bros-wii-u-adds-princess-peach-to-roster/) and Toon Link (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/431004/toon-link-joins-smash-bros-wii-u-and-3ds/).
New characters will be making their Smash Bros debuts too. This Super Smash Bros trailer (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/412831/super-smash-bros-trailer-confirms-2014-release/) revealed Capcom's Mega Man and Animal Crossing's villager will be playable for the first time in the series, while Wii Fit Trainer (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/413141/wii-fit-trainer-to-star-in-smash-bros-4-trailer/)was confirmed shortly afterwards. Rosalina and Luma (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/442965/rosalina-confirmed-for-smash-bros-wii-u/) from Super Mario Galaxy will also feature for the first time, as will Punch-Out hero Little Mac (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/449579/trailer-little-mac-confirmed-for-smash-bros-4/).
