If I drag the image from my browser to my desktop, it saves as a .gif file?

The dithering of the image suggest it's probably a gif too. That said, I'm unfamiliar with motion jpegs (isn't that kind of what an mpeg is anyway?).

Open the file in wordpad, the first 3 chars are GIF, that would be a hint I think :)

Browsers look at more than the extension I guess.

MJPEG is a video codec mostly used in digital (still) cameras. Each frame is completely independent of the rest vs most other modern codecs that take advantage of inter-frame similarities so its certainly nothing special. You would need an embedded video player to view it in a browser.

In Opera, right-clicking the image and choosing Image properties will tell you it's a GIF image and how many frames in uses if it is animated like the one above. This one has 12 frames in it.

Yeah, I was about to say that.

To my conclusion, it's a .gif with a renamed extension. I was playing around with animations and file extensions earlier, and I finally made this (below) which is a .gif but with a .jpg extension. :)

dejkirkby: What version of FF are you running? I'm on the latest and it saves as a .jpg without tacking .gif on the end.

Vampdude: The browser/image viewer is just looking at the header of the file rather than the extenstion, nothing new here really. I can give an image a .gif .jpeg .png .bmp or whatever extension, and acdsee will open it just fine. Photoshop seems to want the extension to be correct though.

Right click properties in FF doesn't tell you much other than the name and size.

MJPEG isn't MPEG4, its less advanced than MPEG1.
