Team Ice (http://www.dev-ice.eu/releases/index.html) has posted details of a possible exploit for the PS3:

First we found an exploit to run SELF files in gameos. Then we coded an application which converts ELF files into runable SELF files. We can load these with our exploit. The coding is not finished, we still have to clean the code, that we will get an screen output. The SELF files are running, but screen doesnt show this atm. When this is fixed we could release a hello world

Update: Team ICE has released another video using an exploit in Motorstorm

how do you know it is running if nothing is on the screen?

are the status lights sending out morse code?

are the status lights sending out morse code?

lol... There are ways of telling, but i doubt they are using them. They are likely just assuming thats what's happening, when it could also have just crashed.

The chances of this actually working are slim, but the chances of a more experienced hacker coming in and hacking that same thing is better.

Well the fact it displays a black screen with their code shows that something is happening. They might just need a few lines of code to output the instructions correctly.

If this is real then awesome :D but I doubt it

A possible exploit on the Playstation 3? That's good, let's see if it will lead to anything good.

Dude, thats cool and all, but any chance we could avoid videos that auto-play? Now i have to hear this every time i go to check for my PS3 news until its covered by new stuff.

On another note: This is really good. I'm still worried about the "Not the newest firmware, no online for you" deal. Forgive me if i wait before turning my PS3 into a homebrew console. I know they'll eventually work around it.

have i missed these other ps3 exploits? on topic, ill keep an eye on this, considering most exploits begin with crashing the console then move onto running code in the same situation, this could go either way.

That's understandable, you're forgiven. As for me, I wouldn't mind losing the online since I don't really play anything online aside from Puzzle Fighter.

God dammit and I just traded in Resistance... GRR!!

Well I am not updating my PS3 anymore.

Shit, I just realized that I'll need a copy of Resistance for this...

yes but this hardly does anything... who knows if it even is an exploit, the ps3 could just be crashing...

The good news is that we may finally have a homebrew powerhouse. The better news is that no one will use illegal ps3 game downloads because they are massive even if the exploit works.

You'd be surprised. I bet there are people that would just upgrade their hard drives for the ISOs. I however, want the emulators and homebrew.

They don't show anything in that video.

All that shows is a crash/hangup. I'm afraid that there's absolutely no proof that this is actually doing anything.

To put it another way - "OMG, it's just a black screen, so it MUST be running code!!!!!"

No no no. They have one program, executing another (and its unsigned no less). Thats what the proof is.

They are able to create a self using the sony header so that it will execute. Thats what this is showing.

I'm sorry, but all this prooves is that it is crashing - nothing more, nothing less. There is no proof that the PS3 is even running any of their code.

If you saw the part where they ran otheros.self, clearly the program executed (it showed the OtherOS installation dialog). Execution is what is important; even if it crashed.

Now all they need to do is figure out how to stop it from crashing (probably easier said than done since I believe that reserved SPU on the Cell is for this purpose...)
