3DS retained the top spot on the Japanese hardware chart during the week ended March 30.
Sales of Nintendo's portable jumped more than 50 per cent in the final week of the month, ensuring it comfortably held off competition from its nearest rival, Vita.
Japan increased its sales tax from five per cent to eight per cent on April 1, Nintendo Life (http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2014/04/3ds_enjoys_a_major_hardware_boost_in_japan_as_wii_ u_sales_also_increase) reports, marking the first rise in 17 years, according to the BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/26830486). This may explain the increase in sales of all hardware platforms (bar PS4) last week, as consumers rushed to purchase expensive items before the start of the month.
