Sega announced they will discontinue the Dreamcast. How did you feel it?

I didn't feel anything, but I got my PS2 7 years ago...

...But thinking back about all the ports SEGA have made since then I feel saddened about how each and every game that is released by SEGA thesedays are of poorer quality than the ones we last saw on the Dreamcast.

At the time I realy didn't care. I was smug with my playstation and being how young I was I didn't understand that the Dreamcast was really superior to the other consoles out at the time. I just bought whatever everyone else had. Nowadays though I'm really disappointed it didn't go as far as it should with it being so powerful in its prime and if it had caught on we could of had the new next gen now.

I share the exact same story.

Can you point to an actual press release? As far as I know, the official word didn't come until March of 01, although production had ceased in November because they still had unsold units (and in fact were never able to notoriously sell out of Dreamcast stock).

They announced discontinuation of producing more consoles as they weren't on a demand to the rate they were being made, the Dreamcast failed to sell many consoles even before the release of the PS2 (mainly due to the Dreamcast having a large library of poorly ported PSone games).

Dreamcast had a bigger library of original games than ported games. Mainly because EA didn't support Dreamcast.

I was disappointed, but had a Playstation as well so I had something to fall back on. I was the only person who I knew that owned one.

the Dreamcast failed to sell many consoles even before the release of the PS2 (mainly due to the Dreamcast having a large library of poorly ported PSone games).

Your statement is flawed in many ways.

1) Outside of Japan, the Dreamcast was released AFTER the announcment of the PS2.
2) In the US, the Dreamcast set records for first day sales, with over 225000 units sold, as well as first day sales of units and games at 98 million USD, and a record number of preorders for a videogame system at 300000 (note: SEGA was unable to fulfill the preorders). In the first two weeks over 500000 had been sold.
As to the sales in Japan, they had to run commercials apologizing for the fact that there were no consoles because it sold out first day (can't find hard numbers) and was the system to have.
3) Most DC games, and ESPECIALLY the ones released prior to the announcement of the PS2 were arcade ports, not PS ports.

Lets take a look at DC games released prior to April 1999 (announcement of PS2):

1999/03/04 Aero Dancing featuring Blue Impulse
1999/03/25 Blue Stinger
1999/04/08 Digital Horse Racing
1999/01/21 Evolution
1999/04/01 Get Bass: Sega Bass Fishing
1998/11/27 Godzilla Generations
1999/03/25 House of the Dead 2
1998/11/27 Incoming
1998/11/27 July
1999/03/18 Kita He ~White Illumination~
1999/03/04 Mahjong Club 2
1999/03/25 Marvel vs. Capcom
1999/03/11 Monaco Grand Prix Racing 2
1999/04/15 Morita's Strongest Reversi
1999/04/15 Morita's Strongest Chess
1999/03/25 Nobunaga no Yabou
1998/11/27 Pen Pen Tricelon
1999/02/25 Pop 'n Music
1999/02/25 Power Stone
1999/03/04 Psychic Force 2012
1999/03/04 Puyo Puyoon
1999/03/11 Real Sound - Wind's Regret
1999/04/29 Redline Racer
1999/03/25 Sangokushi VI
1999/01/28 Sega Rally 2
1999/01/14 Sengoku Turb
1998/12/23 Seventh Cross
1998/12/23 Sonic Adventure
1999/03/25 Super Speed Racing
1998/11/27 Virtua Fighter 3: TB
1999/04/22 Web Mystery - Foretelling Cat
1999/03/20 Yukawa Kawamoto's Manager's Treasure

So, how many of those exactly are PS games? Not many at all.

I'd say they're about the same in terms of good games.

I was bummed, but I didn't truly feel the full effect of it until I saw Sonic on a Nintendo system. A little part of me died that day.

PS2 < DC.

I brought a DC again about a week ago, and its even took over my PS3 :)

For me:

2001 - PS1 and N64 stole my attention

2002 - I was begging my brothers/sisters/parents for a DC :) (Yeah, I was pretty young back then too)

I was young so i didn't really know much about it. Although, i didn't follow games as much either. I am saddened to say that I have only played a DC ONCE in my whole life, and the game was Fighting Force 2...I love that game. I may have to buy a dreamcast...just for the nostalgia aspect.

I was absolutely gutted! I'd only had it for something like 2 or 3 months when I heard the news.

I stuck with it though and it was in regular use up until 2006 when I decided to get a 360.

I've enjoyed loads of relatively cheap games and the life of the machine was extended when I discovered homebrew, emulators (thanks to this site and DC Emulation dot com) and imports and the vga box. I've amassed quite a lot of PAL titles and a few Japanese ones and have had a great deal of enjoyment out of it (and still do to a much lesser extent). With the release of Rez HD, I'm going to dig out my DC version and dust it off again, crack up the volume and find a rumble pack.

I regret that it never had the support of EA and that we didn't get Pro Evo as they would have helped swing it round I think and the whole missing out on DVD probably wasn't a good thing either. I also missed decent single player FPS games as it lacked them somewhat.

Still there were some cracking games and I guess it just failed to reach its potential. It's nice to hear some you folks getting them now though.

I love the Dreamcast, for my money it's better than Playstation systems will ever be.

I was too pumped for the Gamecube to take notice, since I didn't have a computer of my own I didn't take notice to other consoles other than the ones I had, all of which were Nintendo.

Dreamcast is excellent!
All I have to say is Sonic Adventure 1, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, and GenesisPlusDC.
