How do you know that?

Sony > Sandisk

This is the first time I've seen that you're with Sony...

But, I've tested both of them, and SanDisk is better. And yeah, it wasn't a fake Sony Memory Stick.

February 4th, 2008, 02:25
I'm going to have to say I've had the best reliability and performance with the 4GB SanDisk Ultra II PRO Duo memory stick. Although I've been reluctant to upgrade my Slim PSP to 3.90 M33 due to seeing some people post slow speed and lag issues caused by new optimized memory stick driver SONY put in.

Oh, and I've tested both SONY sticks and regular SanDisk sticks. So I'm not just speaking blindly. The Ultra II does show a boost in read/write speeds.

How do you know that?

Sony > Sandisk

I have both, don't be stupid.

Oops
February 4th, 2008, 02:29
Well if you own a sony and a sandisk you can do crazy things like comparing transfert speeds.

There is software which gives that sort of information, like supercopier on windows. You can also use specialised hardware for this purpose: a watch.

By the way, sandisk > sony.

I had problems with sony's memory stick with slow speeds along with lexar which i found to be absolutely horrible. I found Sandisk to be byfar the best in terms of speed, durability and size. The little thing is great. The hdd's are a bit out of place because they are big and bulky and the tiny memory cards are as big and bigger than them.

aznflameboy
February 4th, 2008, 03:57
Lexar has horrible compatability. Sandisk has been proven to be faster than Sony for a while now. Its cheaper also. And blue looks way better than that black. lol. The gaming cards r nice also. My choice would be Sandisk 4 GB Memory Stick Pro Duo. I believe its the cheapest deal for that amount of space. Its also one of the best. It doesnt add weight or bulk to the PSP either and compatabile w/ not only a PSP but other products also. I have 2 of those 4 GB memory sticks and they never failed me so far.

February 4th, 2008, 04:14
I have both a 4 gig Sandisk and a 4 gig Sony. The Sony takes on average 2.5 times longer to transfer, but everything plays fine on either. As I got the Sony off ebay, theres a chance it could be fake, but I don't really care since the price was right.

The hard drive solutions are outdated. They are bulky, heavy and slow, and really not much cheaper than a memory stick.

I have noiced that Sandisk seems to be better in several ways than the official SONY memory sticks.

They are cheaper in most stores I have been to.
They are faster, I have noticed that the read/write speed seems to be better using Sandisk.
They might be more durable, the SONY memory stick that came with my slim PSP broke within days after I purchased the system while an old 1GB Sandisk memory card that I have laying around the house is still intact.

Oh, has anybody tried the MAX Expandable Memory yet? I am wondering whether or not it is worth purchasing.

I've got two of the SanDisk(#1) and one of the sony boys(#2). Both Sans are for emulation(POPs, nes, snes, genesis, sega CD, GBA, N64) and the sony is for the backup cso's and they both run smooth as silk I couldn't tell the difference.

In my time with the PSP, I've had two of the Sony 32mb that come with the standard package, a 2gb Sandisk, a pair of 4gb Sandisk, and the Datel 4gb hdd.

The Sandisk (regular issue Memory Stick Pro Duo, not Ultra II whatever) have never let me down, still in use now. The hard drive was slow, and eventually stopped working, as the little memory stick adapter got beat up (though I've still got the drive, and wouldn't mind using it as a flash drive if I had a reader for it). And of course...what can you say about the official ones, other than they're tiny and really only intended for gamesaves.

Sandisk all the way!

My memory sticks have all been Sony's (32mb, 1GB, 4GB, 8GB) just through ignorance of which'd be better, but they've all worked as well as hoped. My 8GB needs a reformat everytime I'm adding 1.5 builds, but that's specific to all 8GB's, right?
Do those HDs offer anything, cos if not they're a bit of a joke...

sony's are 150kbs
sandisk blues are like 1mbs
sandisk gamers are like 2mbs
sandisk ultra II 10mbs

I see no difference in copy speeds between a 1gb sandisk standard and 4gb Ultra II.
Perhaps with a card reader there would be a difference, but using the PSP for transfers I certainly have never thought 'gee that was faster'.

The only thing that makes a difference is if you're copying many small files (slow) or a big one (fast).

The gaming cards are MLC, the standard blue ones and the Ultra IIs are SLC. Therefore the standard blue ones are not just faster, but they will last for around 10x the cycles are the gaming ones.

I would call BS/lack of actual testing on anyone claiming the gaming cards are faster.

http://backend.ewock.com/ewocksql2/asp/index.asp?ID=855&Action=Standard&IDPage=4644&Secure=False

To quote a good post I have read elsewhere:

"The gaming version 'clear light blue' one (model #SDMSG-2048-A10) are marketed more as a 'gaming' memory for Sony PSP, also it does not include a memory adaptor like the normal 'solid blue' colored ones (model #SDMSPD-2048-A10). Many believed that the gaming versions are more extreme and to be a better memory than the plain normal solid blue colored ones. This is however a misconception, and is not true. The Gaming versions are actually cheaper to produce and are lower in quality compared to the plain/normal solid blue colored ones
The normal Sandisk memory stick pro duo are made using SLC (single-level cell) memory architecture, while the Sandisk Gaming sticks use the MLC (multi-level cell) memory architecture. SLC is better than MLC in many aspect, such as in performance, efficiency, and longevity. Hence, the normal blue memory stick pro duo (SLC) will have longer life in number of rewrites and faster data transfer, compared to the gaming version ones (MLC). The other difference between the two is, the normal solid blue (SDMSPD) is formatted in FAT16, while the gaming version clear blue one (SDMSG) comes preformatted for PSP. You can however format either memory stick pro duo for use in the PSP and other devices.
Ultimately, if you want the better 2GB memory stick pro duo, get the solid blue ones over the gaming version. For those who have the money to spend, do not mind paying more, and simply just want the best of them all in the category, I would recommend the Sandisk 2GB Ultra II memory stick pro duo (model # SDMSPDH-2048-901). Its a waste of money however, if you are using the Sandisk Ultra II on devices that does not have the technology to take advantage of its increase in speed.
More info on MLC and SLC: http://www.memorynet.co.uk/info/faq-single-layer-cell-versus-multi-level-cell.shtml"

ive noticed a large difference tween my 1gb gamer and my ultra II, but only when coping large files

a 900ish mb cso with the gamer took almost 10 min, where as with the ultra II took only about 3

lots of small files and normal use, id get the gamer or the blue

and for the same money get 2x the size (ie 4gb ultra II vs a 8gb blue)

bah
February 5th, 2008, 07:05
Yep.
I got the Ultra II because it wasnt much more than the standard one at the time in the store I bought it from.

There really is no need to go for them if there is much of a difference in cost as the standard blue will give the same speed boost over a sony or sandisk gaming card that the Ultra does, when used with the PSP.

In a card reader or a new camera or something you'd probably see the benefit of the Ultra II over the standard blue, not in a PSP though.

I've never used a Sandisk memory stick, I've always stuck with the official Sony mem stick. But I always hear they're faster and more reliable, whatever the hell that means. I think I might stick with Sony's memory stick just because that's what I have experience using. Though I hear that the hard drives are complete crap and just a way to make your PSP look like shit.

This is an old article from gamespot.com called "The PSP Memory Stick Battle Test" in which Sandisk was the clear winner. I'm not sure how the newer 4gb and 8gb compare, but the 4gb Sandisk I'm using now has worked great for me.

From Gamespot.com:
SanDisk came out as the clear winner in all of the transfer speed tests. We were able to move our 394MB file onto the 512MB SanDisk stick in 1:11 minutes, but the same transfer took over three and a half minutes on the 512MB Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo. The 1GB SanDisk also beat the High Speed 1GB Sony Memory Stick by a large margin in the 769MB file transfer test. Using the USB card reader, we were able to get the file onto the 1GB SanDisk stick in 2:26 minutes compared to 6:12 minutes for the Sony. The transfer time using the PSP was 3:17 for the SanDisk and 7:00 minutes flat for the Sony. Yes, this is the same 1GB SanDisk memory stick that you can find for $100-140 online, and we also used the same Sony High Speed 1GB Memory Stick Pro Duo that retails for $150-$300.

We found that transferring data to the memory card was much faster using our dedicated flash card reader/writer, as using the PSP to write directly to the card lengthened transfer times by about 30 seconds in the 394MB file transfer and almost a minute in the 769MB file transfer.

The SanDisk memory sticks still outperformed the Sony models even with the PSP file transfer overhead. Aside from the transfer speed differences, we didn't notice much of a difference between the cards while using them for normal media playback or saving games on the PSP. Judging by the test results, if you're looking for a fast and affordable memory stick, we'd pick the SanDisk over Sony any day.

Good 'ol Sandisk for me. Faster than my (official) Sony memstick I use in my digital camera and cheaper too.

Though the Datel memory sticks are fine (use one for my cheatsaves from Action Replay), they're slow, transfer wise, and I can only recommend 'em for saved games and some homebrew. ISOs, Movies and PS1 games lag abit on them, from my experiences.

Fair enough, they're like hens teeth in Western Australia.
I will stick to the Ultra IIs in future.

Hell, I cant even find an official sony PSP battery in any store, even bloody sony central couldn't help. Almost all the ones I find online have a few positive comments and many negative ones saying they're fake. Emailing sony Australia didn't get me anywhere either.
People in the USA seem to be able to buy them at best buy etc, its strange how rare they are in Australia (Western Australia at least).

Yeh, I had problems finding a Sony battery, ended up just getting one off Play.com for a daft tenner, it's probably fake but at this point I couldn't really give two ****s - it pandora-ized OK.

bah
April 2nd, 2008, 15:48
I just want an official Sony stamina battery, then I'll use the one that came with the system for pandora.

I don't doubt that other companies are perfectly capable of making a good battery, just that I've heard of many issues with non official batteries and the companies/ebay sellers behind fake ones don't really care if their crap gets bad publicity.

Back on the memory stick topic, does anyone know of any speed benchmarks for the new (MLC) blue sandisk cards?
I always wondered if them being SLC was the reason for their better speeds (compared to sony cards) or if it was something else.

I've Sandisk 2GB & SONY 8GB (Standard one, not Mark II) for PSP Slim. Different between is data transfer speed while copying cso files from PC to memory stick via PSP USB Link. Not effect to gaming speed. I bought 8G for 60 AUD from Aussie E-bay.

BY the way, my PSP Slim is 3.90 M33-2. Is there any issue with 8GB memory stick if I update to 4.01 M33-2 ? Some blogger said 4.01 does not reconized 8GB Stick. Please let me know.

the red Gaming sandisk 4 gig stick is the best fastest pro duo around much faster then Sony pro duo

bah
October 10th, 2008, 11:08
2die4: That is incorrect.

The gaming line are the same speed or slower than the standard blue sandisk cards.

They're quite likely still faster than the standard sony cards, but unless they are cheaper then go for the standard blue ones.

If i had to worry about the need of over 4 gbs in memory stick form..... then id probably get a 8 or 16 gb micro sd with ms pro duo adapter..

or.... you can be like me and have a usbhost/nethost psp...

My brother has a Sony 4GB and I have a Sandisk 4GB.

Firstly, mine was about half the price of his. Also, when we are transferring data mine is quicker.

So SANDISK!

heh.... its not really hard..... at the time though i used something different ( and my own compiled host plugin... but that was when i was on linux :p )

right now though im using hostcore which has worked really well.

so my advice is to get hostcore and try it out :)

im in to the 8gb memory stick combo, because i have so much stuff and songs etc. gotta have it
and I agree with last post.. different sandisks have different writing speeds and processing speeds especially for digital cameras.

At the moment I'd say 16Gb Pro Duo, although I only have 8Gb.

acually at the moment... the BEST ( albit expensive imo ) solution is to grab...

*PhotoFast CR-5400 ( thats a ms pro duo with 2 micro sd slots )
*2x 16GB microsd memory sticks

that will cost you about $120-$150 ( unless you can snab the memorysticks on sale at somthing under $50 each )

thats about the best solution i can think of :/

I have used sandisk and sony, the only difference i can see is in the mark 2 where they fixed the plastic above the pins breaking off. Datel has quality products but i have never tried the hard drive

SONY has a new version of memory stick DUO--Mark2.
The difference for these memory stick is the speed and stablity.

PSP3000 can be compatible with 16G memory stick.

I agree and disagree with you. I agree that it is the best solution 32gb:D but i disagree that it is expensive
the apater is about 16 dollers and micro 16gb are $54 on ebay compared to $79 for an 8 gb pro at wallmart. you can get the adapter and a single 16gb for less then a 8 gb pro then l8r on get the 2nd 16 gb micro

newegg has class six microSD 16gb cards for 54 dollars. A-data ones, but I've used A-data ram in the past and it's been wonderful, so I grabbed the bastards up... my photofast should be ariving today if ems really does deliver on sundays. :D

Photo Fast CR-5400 adapter and 2 x 16 GB micro SD cards all bought off eBay $140.00 AU 10 working days for shipment as one part came from UK the others from Hong Kong. Bit slow to start up but no loss of game play or load times. (Kingston 16 GB Sticks). I also got 2 x 8 GB Sandisk micro SD cards from ebay for $21.00 Au each inc shipping.

Hi ,the best mem stick for the psp is the `SANDISK PRO DUO` which are especially designed for the psp , im running a 4gb one which is red , but ive just purchased an 8gb green one from amazon for £17.95 uk pounds....these are excellent sticks and can be erased & installed to all the time with no problems i recommend these makes to anyone with a psp....i have had original `SONY pro duo `sticks but they have gone faulty overtime....hope this helps!!!!
