March is typically when big releases coming to stores. This year was no different with EA’s Titanfall andSony's Infamous: Second Son hitting shelves.
Last month £64.5m was generated from software sales – 8.6 per cent less than last year. 2.1m units were sold in this time, a 19.9 per cent drop compared to March 2013.
Both Tomb Raider and BioShock Infinite were released last March, which explains these higher figures.
Though the market is down year-on-year, it is charting as you would expect month-on-month. In 2013, there was a 55.9 per cent rise in revenue between February and March. This year the increase is to the tune of 53.3 per cent – so not too far from where it was last year.
This rise was helped by a number of new titles. In fact, six of the Top Ten games are titles released in March.
At the head of the Top 50 is Titanfall. EA’s blockbuster shooter debuts ahead of Square Enix’s Thief, Ubisoft's South Park: The Stick of Truth and Second Son.
The launch of Titanfall had a huge impact on Xbox One’s software market share. More money was made from Xbox One games in March than any other console.
This is also the first time since November that more games were sold for Microsoft's console than PS4.
The releases of Dark Souls II and Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes also contributed to the increased market share held by Bandai Namco and Konami respectively.
