Your Dragon Quest 8 has begun on iOS (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dragon-quest-viii/id862972069?mt=8) and Android (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.square_enix.android_googleplay.dq8) , marking the first of the RPG series' mobile ports to reach the West. You can take the PS2 adventure on the go for $20 stateside, or £14/18 Euros across the ocean.

The port promises "streamlined" touchscreen controls with freely positional d-pads and reworked combat that allows for both one-tap standoffs and more strategic approaches. Going by footage published by
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5pfz_Acq9A it doesn't seem to feature the voice acting found in the PS2 game. We suspect that means it's based on the Japanese original, since that was a feature added later to Western versions.

Square Enix announced last year (http://www.joystiq.com/2013/10/08/dragon-quest-1-8-head-for-smartphones/) it was bringing Dragon Quest 1-8 to smartphones, and it's re-released 1, 4 and 8 so far. The first two of those were limited to Japan, and it's unknown what the publisher's plans are for bringing other entries West.
