Sony's brand perception is "clearly" recovering following the PSN security breach PR cataclysm last month, so says CEO Howard Stringer.

Speaking at Sony's annual meeting in a Tokyo hotel, as reported by the BBC, Stringer apologised for the hack and praised PlayStation gamers for returning to the system.

"Our brand perception, you'll be happy to know, is clearly improving again," he insisted.

"My foremost responsibility to the board and all of you is to further advance the transformation process, firmly establish Sony's position as a global product, content and service leader in the networked digital era and ensure our continued development and growth."

Stringer also took the opportunity to announce that he'd taken a pay-cut. His salary and bonuses have fallen 16 per cent to a meagre ¥345m yen (around £2.7m) a year.

Even so, some shareholders in attendance didn't seem to have a great deal of faith in the chief executive, with one calling for him to resign. The company's stock has dropped 30 per cent over the last 12 months and it has recorded three consecutive years of losses.

    2. Wii U News

Core gamers will accept the Wii U because it has high definition visuals and can be played in a conventional way, Nintendo has said.

That was boss Satoru Iwata's response when asked by a shareholder today whether the hardcore will accept Nintendo's next home console.

"Wii was not accepted by core gamers because they did not want to abandon their preferred control approach," he said, as reported by Andriasang.

"Additionally, Wii did not use HD because HD cost performance at the time was low. Wii U makes it easier to use conventional controls. Also, the Wii U controller is not as big or heavy as it looks."

Some criticised the Wii U's debut after Nintendo chose to showcase tech demos running on the hardware rather than games that will eventually launch.

This led to concern that the Wii U may suffer from a poor launch line-up of games - as the Nintendo 3DS did earlier this year - but Iwata told investors this will not be the case.

The CEO then suggested the eye-catching Zelda HD tech demo showcased at E3 was only possible on the Wii U.

"Regarding Zelda HD, Japanese developers said that it could not be replicated on other machines," Iwata said.

It was made in a relatively short period, so Iwata feels that HD development will not be a problem.

Nintendo's share price hit its lowest value in five years following the unveiling of the Wii U.

"There were high expectations from the new version of the Wii and this fell far short," said analyst Yusuke Tsunoda.

"People had expected to see something more at a big event like the E3, but there wasn't really anything more than what's already reported."

Iwata countered this criticism, saying feedback from those who actually played the Wii U was positive.

"Reactions directly from LA were extremely good," he said. "The majority of the overseas media offered congratulations. The reaction differed greatly between those who covered the product at the show and those who just covered it online. In other words, the point is how Nintendo can convey the value of the product."

Oli Welsh went hands-on at E3 for Eurogamer's Wii U preview.

The console launches some time next year – but not before April.

    2. WebOS

HP CEO Leo Apotheker has already indicated that he's totally open to licensing webOS to other companies, and he's now confirmed that HP has, in fact, been in talks with a "number of companies" about that possibility. Not surprisingly, he didn't get much more specific than that, and went some way to dampen expectations a bit, saying that "there is no time pressure to do this." According to Bloomberg, however, "three people with knowledge of the discussions" say that Samsung is one of the companies HP has had talks with, and one said that the company is specifically interested in possibly using webOS for its Galaxy Tab tablets. HP's Jon Rubinstein also dished a bit more on the subject to This is my next, noting that "if someone wants to really invest, and potentially help develop webOS, we're interested in talking to them," although he went on to indicate that HP isn't interested in playing second (or third) fiddle with a company primarily focused on Android or Windows Phone -- it'd seemingly have to be webOS first, but not necessarily webOS exclusively.

    4. Apple iPhone

In Symantec's bleak, dystopian world, it doesn't matter whether you choose Android or iOS -- you'll be making yourself vulnerable to attacks regardless of the camp you're in. The company just concluded a study pitting iOS's security against Android's -- an undertaking intended mainly for corporate IT staffs trying to figure out which devices they can safely issue to employees. (Curiously, despite the enterprise focus, you won't find a single comparison against BlackBerrys.) Although iOS won higher marks when it came to thwarting traditional malware and showed a more modest advantage in terms of data loss, data integrity, and service attacks, the two platforms proved equally adept at preventing web-based attacks -- and equally powerless to catch socially engineered ones. And when it came to implementing certain security measures, such as permissions-based controls, Android pulled ahead.

Ultimately, Symantec (which sells mobile security software of its own, by the by) concluded that both "are still vulnerable to many existing categories of attacks," not least because both platforms allow users to sync with third-party apps or web services that may or may not be secure themselves. Indeed, Symantec's thesis is that Apple's App Store approval process helps explain its lead in the malware-blocking department. Also, in shocking news, Symantec adds that people using jailbroken are especially attractive targets for attackers, and that these devices are as vulnerable as computers. Don't say no one warned you. Head past the break for a press release with a summary of the findings or, if you're curious, hit the source link for a PDF version of the full report.

    2. PC News

OnLive wants to bring its market-leading facial and motion capture technology Contour to video games in the near future, claiming that the graphical quality is only possible using game streaming services.

The technology, developed by OnLive sister company MOVA, has featured in multiple Hollywood movies, winning an Oscar for Achievement in Visual Effects for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and most recently seen in Green Lantern, the latest Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter and Transformers releases.

It has also been deployed in Warner Bros. Batman: Arkham City trailer, which OnLive CEO Steve Perlman described as a "test", as he hopes it will next be used for in-game graphics in video games.

"It shows the kind of capability we're going to be doing in games for OnLive, live," he told GamesIndustry.biz.

"It can't run on Xbox, it can't run on any 2012 technology, it's not going to run on a PC, so it's only going to be running in cloud based computing," he added.

"What makes this real, what distinguishes this from any other trailer, is the face. None of the other stuff is different from the sort of 3D stuff that's being done, but when you see this real human face suddenly you say 'oh my god, this is live action'".

Perlman, who also acts as president of MOVA as well as streaming games service OnLive, said it's now time to bring the two technologies together, and added that the company has proven itself to publishing and development partners with the successful roll-out of OnLive over the past year.

"This is where gaming's going, and it's going to be on every kind of device, everywhere you are, and the publishers, there are over 50 publishers that are supporting us, so we're no longer in a position where we're like 'OK, are we going to work, are users going to adopt this thing, is there an economic model that works?'"

Former Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) president Andrew House has been made president of Sony Computer Entertainment International (SCEI), with SCEE co-COO Jim Ryan taking House's place.

Current SCEI chairman Akira Sato will retire from the role in August 31, leaving the way for Sony Corp. deputy executive president Kazuo Hirai to take his place and for House to become president of SCEI.

At the same time as the announcement PlayStation creator Ken Kutaragi stepped down as honorary chairman of SCEI, although he still maintains his senior technology advisory role at Sony.

"Since returning to SCE two years ago, I have focused on further expanding our business in the European/PAL territories and regaining our market leadership there," said House.

"I believe there is huge potential for further growth of our business globally, and I’m looking forward to working with everyone in the SCE group and with other groups in Sony to help achieve this potential by pursuing the creation of brand new user experiences."

"I’m confident that the skills and expertise Andy has gained over two decades working for Sony and SCE Group will contribute enormously in leading the PlayStation business and to bring new initiatives in managing the business in the networked era," said Hirari.

"I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the great support from third party game developers and publishers and particularly to the wonderful creators all over the world," said Sato on his retirement.

"Without the great content from a wide spectrum of genres made by third party game developers and publishers, as well as SCE Worldwide Studios, PlayStation would not be where it is now," he added.

Bodycount game director Andy Wilson has spoken about reaching the limits of the current generation consoles.

In an interview with CVG, Wilson said Bodycount’s environmental destruction was proving particularly taxing on the consoles.

"It takes a huge amount of effort to get all of that to even work on current consoles, because it takes shit-loads of memory, it sucks up performance out of the consoles like you wouldn't believe," he revealed.

Wilson was also asked if consoles were reaching their technical limits.

"I think [that's] probably fair, yeah. It's been an unusually long console cycle and it's going to run on for some time yet," he said.

"You find the ceiling by building engines, tools and middleware which mean the next game you do on the current generation you've already done all of that stuff, so you can then push it even further."

Bodycount, a shooter with an emphasis on destructible environments, is currently in production at Codemasters' Guildford studio. It’s due for release in August.
