A UK sales study by the Entertainment Retailers Association has revealed the extent of the growth in digital sales, and how much that growth counteracts shrinkage in traditional retail.
This year, the report features digital sales information, gathered by Screen Digest, for the first time. That data shows a 23.1 per cent growth in the digital download market over the calendar year of 2010.
Screen Digest estimates that UK digital sales in 2010 were worth £411 million. Compare that to the £414 value of disc-based PlayStation 3 sales for an indication of the market's relative value.
That growth is in stark contrast to a 9 per cent overall shrinkage in the traditional games retail market, ameliorating that figure to a 3.7 per cent shrink overall when digital sales are accounted for. Traditional retail game sales brought in £1.529 billion in the UK last year, the report states, compared to £1.681 billion in 2009.
Handhelds showed the largest market loss in software, taking a massive 36.3 per cent (47.8 per cent PSP, 34.4 per cent DS) hit in 2010. No figures are provided for smartphones.
Home console software stayed largely stable with a 1.5 per cent loss, almost entirely in Wii sales. Both PS3 (up 16.9 per cent to £414m) and Xbox 360 (up 13 per cent to £538m) made gains whilst Wii retail dropped 29.1 per cent in value to £290 million. Boxed PC sales fell by 17 per cent in value to £78 million.
Hardware retail also continued its declining trend, with handheld sales down 39 per cent by volume and 33.8 in value. Static consoles dipped by 21 per cent in terms of units and 23.7 by unit value.

Sony has confirmed plans to launch its cloud-based music service, Music Unlimited, on PSP2 and is due to go live on the current PSP in weeks.

The service landed on PS3 in Europelast December, and in US in February this year. Music Unlimited gives you access to over six million music tracks all via a cloud service - which means it streams straight to your console, negating the need to ever store music on your hard drive. It costs $9.99 monthly for the premium service, while the basic service is $3.99.

The service is now set to spring to life on your PSP "in a matter of weeks", Sony has confirmed.

"The heart of the offering here is that with the one account you can access this music on your TV, your PS3, your laptop, your Blu-ray player, and have your music follow you wherever you go, rather than having to download all of your music into a device and make that device go with you everywhere," said Sony Network Entertainment boss Shawn Layden to Eurogamer.

When asked about the service coming to NGP, he said: "We will make it happen," adding, "there are still very few details that have come out in the marketplace about the launch. The folks at Sony Computer Entertainment will have a big reveal of exactly what the scope of that entire feature set is going to be.

"But yes, our services need to be available on that device. It's a very powerful device and it would be an incredibly good platform for us."

    2. Android News

A storm seems to be brewing over the realm of Android development. Bloomberg's Businessweek spies have received word from "a dozen executives working at key companies in the Android ecosystem" that Google is actively working to gain control and final say over customizations of its popular mobile OS. That might not sound unreasonable, and indeed Google's public position on the matter is that it's seeking to stabilize the platform and ensure quality control, but it does mark a major shift from where Android started -- an open source OS that was also open to manufacturers and carriers to customize as they wish. Not so anymore, we're told, as apparently Mountain View is now demanding that content partnerships and OS tweaks get the blessing of Andy Rubin before proceeding. The alternative, of course, is to not be inside Google's warm and fuzzy early access program, but then, as evidenced by the company recently withholding the Honeycomb source code, you end up far behind those among your competitors who do dance to Google's pipe.

Things have gotten so heated, in fact, that complaints have apparently been made to the US Department of Justice. They may have something to do with allegations of Google holding back Verizon handsets with Microsoft's Bing on board, ostensibly in an effort to trip up its biggest search competitor. Another major dissatisfaction expressed by those working with Android code is that Google needs an advance preview of what is being done in order to give it the green light -- which, as noted by a pair of sources familiar with Facebook's Android customization efforts, isn't sitting well with people at all. Google and Facebook are direct competitors in the online space and it's easily apparent how much one stands to gain from knowing the other's plans early. As to the non-fragmentation clauses in licenses, Andy Rubin has pointed out those have been there from the start, but it's only now that Google is really seeking to use them to establish control. The future of Android, therefore, looks to be a little less open and a little more Googlish -- for better or worse. As Nokia's Stephen Elop puts it:
"The premise of a true open software platform may be where Android started, but it's not where Android is going."

Xbox 360 Kinect Sensor Cable Extension
    Manufacturer: N/A
    Site: Buy from LighTake
    Price: $8.79

Xbox 360 Kinect Sensor Power Supply Adapter
Site: Buy from LighTake (US) / Buy from Amazon (US) / Buy from PriceAngels (US) / Buy from PriceAngels (EU) / Buy from DealExtreme (EU) / Buy from VolumeRates (EU)
    Price: $13.80

Overview : The Xbox 360 Kinect Sensor Extension Cable will allow you to extend your connection by 3M meaning you to place your Kinect Sensor virtually anywhere in your living space.

This is an ideal item for large living areas as well as entertainment centers also if you Kinect sensor is on your wall, above a fire place ect.

    Features :
    • The extension cable allows you to put your Kinect sensor bar an additional 3meters from your Xbox 360
    • Allowing for more complex configurations or home theater applications
    • It’s inexpensive and provides the reliability that only a hard-wired solution can accomplish
    • Ideal for large living rooms and large entertainment centers

Quality/Usability : *This will only work on Xbox 360 Slim consoles or with power adapter from standalone Kinect Sensor. This does not allow you to connect the Kinect directly to the back of the original Xbox 360.

Some gamers may have their systems in one end of the room from their TV or monitor while others may have them near each other or in entertainment centers. However you have your systems setup, you may need an extension cable for your Xbox 360 Kinect. The extension cable has proprietary plugs that will only fit into the Kinect port on the Xbox 360 Slim or if you purchased the standalone Kinect, it comes with a power supply and it can be plugged into the Y-split plug. The Kinect draws power from the special proprietary port on the back of the Xbox 360 Slim console but with the original Xbox 360, a power supply is needed. This power supply has a normal USB plug that plugs into the back of the Xbox 360 but has an extra cable that splits which contains the proprietary Kinect port. This is where the Kinect draws its power from and where the extension cable connects to.

The extension cable gives you an extra 9'-10' feet of additional cable and is durable. To use this extension cable, the proprietary USB plug on the extension cable goes into the Xbox 360 Slim console or to the power supply (standalone Kinect only). On the other end of the extension cable is a proprietary port and this is where you plug the Xbox 360 Kinect plug.

Having used the extension cable, there was no lag or delay in signal being transmitted. Since we only have one extension cable, we have do not know what would happen is you daisy chained 2 extension cables if you needed more than 10' feet of cable. However, from what I have read on the internet with other extension cables, you are not able to daisy chain 2 or more cables. If you daisy chained 2 extension cables, there would be no power.

Conclusion : Overall, the Xbox 360 Kinect Sensor Cable Extension gives gamers an additional 10' feet of extra cable. This is perfect if your console and TV is not near each other or have your Kinect mounted on a wall or on a stand. The price is very very reasonable and affordable compared to the Officially licensed extension cable from PDP that retails for $49.99 and does exactly the same thing. Even though I have not confirmed it myself, it seems based on reports on the internet and if all extension cables are the same, you will NOT be able to daisy chain extension cables to give you an additional 10' feet.

Xbox 360 Kinect Sensor Protective Silicone Gel Case Cover
    Manufacturer: N/A
Site: Buy from LighTake (black) / Buy from LighTake (white)
    Price: $6.59

Overview : Protect your Xbox 360 Kinect Sensor from dust, dirt, scratches and fingerprints. Slides easily over the Kinect.

    Features :
    • Protects Xbox 360 Kinect from dust, dirt, scratches and fingerprints!
    • Made of silicone Material
    • Easy to install & remove
    • Total access to the ports and controls

Quality/Usability : Some may see silicone cases as necessary and some may see it as useless whether it be cellphones or handheld products. It is all about personal preference. Granted that the Kinect sensor is stationary, I prefer to protect it. With all the moving and jumping around, you never know. I also like to keep my products in tip top condition as it is better for resale value. With my game room being a dust magnet, dust love to attract to any location or product that has a flat surface.

The silicone case is made of durable rubber that is similarly used on cellphones, Nintendo DS, iPhones, cameras and other portable devices. It has a decent amount of thickness where its not transparent and doesn't feel thin where it will rip easily. There are cutouts on the front for the camera and sensor and the bottom to insert the Kinect. The sides also have openings but protect the edges of the Kinect as the edges of the silicone are rounded. To insert the Xbox 360 Kinect sensor into the silicone case, you insert it from the bottom. Once the sensor is inside the case, it's a perfect fit and snug.

Conclusion : Overall, the Xbox 360 Kinect Sensor Protective Silicone Gel Case Cover protects the Kinect very well. Cheap in price and its a perfect fit. If you have hardwood floor or just want to keep your product in mint condition, I suggest investing in something like this. It comes in two colors; black and white.

"A lot of people in the games industry, they think the 'real' games are on consoles. You're only a 'real' games company if you do a big budget game. But we don't have that inferiority complex," Rovio head Peter Vesterbacka told MCV in a recent interview. Vesterbacka was defending against Nintendo's latest criticisms of the mobile market -- both Nintendo of Japan head Satoru Iwata and Nintendo of America head Reggie Fils-Aime have argued that low-priced smartphone apps are degrading the value of games.

"If I was trying to sell a $49 piece of plastic to people then yes, I'd be worried too," Vesterbacka added, with a tinge of vitriol, alluding to the standard retail price of a Wii game disc. "But I think it's a good sign that people are concerned -- because from my point of view we're doing something right." Rovio's Angry Birds and its spin-offs are just a $1 each for iPhone and are offered as free, ad-supported apps on the Android Market.

Still, the company has plans for more console development, having already released Angry Birds as a PlayStation Mini, with additional console ports in the pipeline -- even Nintendo's 3DS is getting an Angry Birds port. "Games consoles for us are just like launching on a new smartphone platform," Vesterbacka said nonchalantly. After all, he's probably more concerned with the movie tie-in, the planned US IPO, and, uh, having an Angry Bird etched into the Moon.

Okay, that last one probably isn't happening. Yet.

By now you've probably watched iFixit's recent iPad 2 teardown video several times while drooling profusely, but we just know you're itching to find out what's different with the innards of the WiFi-only, GSM, and CDMA versions. Well once again, iFixit's got you covered -- via an "exceptionally cool" user-contributed post, this time. A grand total of three iPad 2s were sacrificed in this round, revealing variations in case design, antenna count, WWAN board layout, radio chipset choices, and headphone jack assemblies. Besides clearly visible changes like the black antenna window on the 3G models and the microSIM slot on the GSM version, it's interesting to note that Apple made the same design choices with the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4. The CDMA model features an additional antenna over its GSM sibling, and uses a Qualcomm Gobi dual-mode radio which supports both CDMA and GSM -- the latter being unused -- along with an integrated GPS receiver, just like the iPhone 4 for Verizon. The GSM version, meanwhile, uses an Infineon chipset for GSM and a separate Broadcom module for GPS, just like the global iPhone 4. Follow the source link below for more sordid details plus high-resolution pictures.

The PSP has narrowly missed retaking the weekly Japanese hardware crown just a month after the launch of the 3DS.
According to the latest Media Create data, as posted on Andriasang, the PSP sold 50,479 units last week compared to 50,710 3DS purchases. Nintendo's new console shifted 61,394 the week before, with its lifetime Japanese sales now sitting at 792,954.
The PlayStation 3 came in at third with 28,973, followed by the DS at 19,094 and Wii at 11,808. The Xbox 360 managed to bring in 1,963 new users.
Worrying figures for Nintendo. Supply issues are not to blame for the slump - the platform holder confirmed the system was in stock in Japanese stores when contacted by Eurogamer for clarification.
UK and US sales numbers for the 3DS aren't in yet, although Nintendo has claimed the new portable is its fastest selling handheld ever.
The PSP was up from 23,511 last week, with the release of Final Fantasy IV: Complete Collection no doubt spurring the system on.

Square's repackaged RPG topped the software charts, selling 104,173 in its debut week. The rest of the top 10 looked like this:
    1. Final Fantasy IV: Complete Collection (PSP, Square Enix): 104,173 / NEW
    2. Dynasty Warriors 7 (PS3, Koei Tecmo): 36.548 / 357.113 (-46%)
    3. Gundam: The 3D Battle (3DS, Bandai Namco): 23.500 / NEW
    4. Dissidia: 012 (Duodecim) Final Fantasy (PSP, Square Enix): 21.741 / 403.912 (-30%)
    5. Monster Hunter Freedom 3 (PSP, Capcom): 16.444 / 4.401.653 (+11%)
    6. Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle (3DS, Level 5): 16.294 / 242.649 (-12%)
    7. Phantasy Star Portable 2: Infinity (PSP, SEGA): 14.403 / 300.418 (-11%)
    8. Nintendogs + Cats: French Bulldog / Shiba / Toy Poodle & New Friends (3DS, Nintendo): 13.219 / 160.742 (-10%)
    9. SD Gundam G Generation: World (PSP, Bandai Namco): 10.160 / 283.802 (-29%)
    10. Pokemon Black / White (DS, Pokemon Co.): 10.025 / 5.127.678 (+16%)
