StarCraft II modder Ryan Winzen's life may be about to turn upside down: Blizzard has told Eurogamer it will consider offering him a job – if he's good enough.
His creation, World of StarCraft, puts the assets of StarCraft II into a World of Warcraft mould. A gameplay video shows a character selection screen as the demonstrator flicks through the available class options. The footage also shows a group battling monsters in the StarCraft II world. Action is third-person, as in WOW, and the requisite health bars and skill bars of an MMO user interface are present.
A YouTube video showcasing the mod, which you can see below, was slapped with a cease and desist order from Activision Blizzard after it went viral. But it was all a misunderstanding. Blizzard revealed it was happy for the mod to live on with the name changed to StarCraft Universe. It turned out Blizzard owned the trademark to World of StarCraft. Who knew?
Now Winzen, who will soon meet with the StarCraft II team at Blizzard headquarters, could be offered a job by the creator of the very game he used to make his eye-catching mod.
"There are a number of factors that go into whether somebody can get a job based on their work," StarCraft II game design director Dustin Browder told Eurogamer.
"I haven't met him. Is he a nice guy? I don't know. If he's a jerk then absolutely not. I don't care how good you are. I'm building a team here of people that has to work together.
"Is he technically skilled? How much of that did he do on his own? What are his design values? What he did was technically impressive, but does he understand how to make a great game? I haven't even played the mod.
"There are a lot of questions that go into it. But if he's somebody who did all this great work and he passes all the other challenges to being a game designer, then yeah, he could be looking at offers from me or from other developers around the business.
"I don't know whether he's got the proof or not. For his sake I hope he does. But that's all up to him at the end of the day, whether he's done the homework, done the effort, to get that kind of opportunity.
"A YouTube video of something technically impressive is not a game designer, but it is on your way. It is possibly a game a designer, which is very exciting."
Explaining the "big misunderstanding" that caused Activision Blizzard to force the World of StarCraft video from the internet, Browder said some within the company thought it had been created outside of StarCraft II.
"We just want to shake his hand and say sorry for the misunderstanding," he said. "You got to give him a break. It's very difficult to look at that mod and understand that's a StarCraft mod.
"Some people within the organisation thought it was a whole new game. Hats off to our tools developer that they made a tool that somebody could so easily confuse our staff about what was going on!
"Once it was explained, hey, this is not what you think it is, this is what we want to encourage, this is just another great StarCraft mod in the works, things got easier for everybody.
"It was just a big misunderstanding. We just want to shake his hand and say let's look at this mod together and revel in the craziness this guy had put together. The absolute over-the-top amount of effort this guy has put into it is just glorious. We just want to say congratulations and good luck and please keep it up."
Winzen has already scored a job offer from League of Legends developer Riot Games.

Eskil Steenberg, the Swedish creator of bohemian MMO Love, is not impressed by Kinect. If he had to pick, he'd choose Move.
"Kinect is really cool from a technical point of view but pretty worthless for most games," he told Eurogamer.
"Games that are good for it are dancing and aerobics stuff. That's what it's good for."
"If I were actually making a game I would much rather make it for Move, because you actually have a button."
"There are some good things about it," he added, "but in a way I think it's kind of a cheat.
Steenberg used the analogy of bad photographers talking about cameras and good photographers talking about emotions to sum up his feeling about motion sensing controllers.
"It's like that," he said, "you change something superficial. It's not where we're going."
What cannot be disputed, however, is Kinect's commercial success. It's sold a whopping eight million units since launch, and is the fastest-selling consumer electronics product ever.
Love, an game built by one man, involves building a base of monuments by collecting tokens found around a sumptuous watercolour world. Some of those tokens will be stolen from other players or the AI, and the world evolves, adapts, reacts and changes around you, depending on your actions.
In an interview published today, Eurogamer sat Eskil Steenberg down to reflect on four years making Love - and what lies ahead for a man some people have apparently described as a genius.
Will he work with fellow Swede and MineCraft maker Markus Persson?
You can find out more about how to play Love on the official website.

3D is one the major draws for Nintendo's new 3DS handheld, yet Team Ninja head Yosuke Hayashi advises hardcore players who grab his launch game, Dead or Alive: Dimensions, to turn the 3D off.

While he says people who really want to see the game in 3D should go ahead and do so, he goes on to suggest: "For those after a hard-core fighting experience, turning the 3D effect off would be a better way to go. We are giving different users two different ways to enjoy the game."

The reason? When the game is running in 2D mode you get a silky smooth 60 frames-per-second refresh rate. When you flick on 3D mode that drops to 30fps.

It even affects online multiplayer, where you might assume that, for connection purposes, the game is locked to 30fps. "Regardless of the mode you are playing, when the 3D slider is turned on the game will run at a constant 30 fps," confirms Hayashi.

"This system works regardless of the mode you are playing, so even if you are playing against others via local/online play, if you turn the stereoscopic 3D effect off, and even if other players have it on, your game will constantly run at 60fps," Hayashi elaborated," he adds.

Hiyashi suggests that hardcore fighters will appreciate the added frame rate over the 3D, which he says doesn't add more to gameplay but is just a visual effect.

DOA will look pretty good in either mode (see for yourself). So how will you be playing it?

Here we go again. Now that Sony's officially revealed the PlayStation phone and PSP 2, of course the rumour mill finds something else to grind its way through, and this time it's a PlayStation tablet.

According to Engadget, citing "two highly trusted and independent sources", Sony is currently working on a PlayStation-certified tablet to go up against iPad and Samsung's offerings later this year.

Codenamed 'S1', it'll apparently be an Android 3.0-powered device with a 9.4 inch capacitive touch screen panel at 1,280 x 800 pixels.

The site says the device will be PlayStation certified - like the 'Xperia Play' Playstation Phone - meaning access to the PlayStation Suite and all its gaming offerings. It'll also be able to play PSone games and will come with one PSone title pre-installed. This comes in addition to compatibility to Sony's Qriosity and video on demand services, Sony Music and ebook offerings.

The tablet also apparently has a somewhat strange design, ditching the typically flat shape for a bulging curvature on one side of the machine, which is said to resemble "an open paperback stuffed into the back pocket, or a magazine folded backward upon itself such that only a single page is visible to read".

This bulge will house the battery, which shifts the weight to one side of the unit where users will hold it, apparently making it easier to hold than an iPad.

Front and rear-facing cameras are included, a Tegra 2 processor for those of you who knows what that is, and a USB port for memory sticks and whatnot.

All that's said to be coming for a price of $599, and is targeting a September release. We'll see. More info through the link.

Google has launched a new payment system that allows users to subscribe to online content for a 10% commission fee.
The move comes after rival Apple was criticised over its payment system which takes 30% of the sale price.
One Pass will work on tablets and smartphones, as well as Google-related websites.
One Pass will launch initially in the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
The announcement came just one day after Apple announced new rules for publishers selling subscriptions on its iOS platform.
Apple says companies must now offer users the option to buy directly through an iTunes account, handing 30% of the price to Apple.
Previously, vendors were allowed to simply direct customers to an external website, keeping all of the profits.
On a Google blog posting, Lee Shirani, the company's director of business product management wrote: "Publishers can customise how and when they charge for content while experimenting with different models to see what works best for them."

CEO Eric Schmidt reveals Nokia were close to Android agreement

Speaking at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Schmidt said the search giant held "confidential negotiations with Nokia that were extensive” before the Finnish vendor opted for the Windows Phone 7 platform.
The soon-to-leave CEO left the door open for Nokia should they want to renege on the Microsoft deal.
"We would like them to adopt Android at some point in the future and that offer remains open. We think Android was a good choice for Nokia. We are sorry they made a different choice” he said.
That may well be a possibility, after an anonymous group of Nokia shareholders announced plans to dislodge Stephen Elop and rethink the use of the WP7 platform.
During his speech, Schmidt revealed that Android is gaining 300,000 new users each day. At that rate, its no surprise ad revenues of the mobile OS are forecast to surpass $1 billion dollars by 2012.
