The costs of the materials inside Microsoft's Kinect motion controller add up to around $56, according to a report.

A piece by EE Times breaks down the components of the latest peripheral from Microsoft, noting that the PrimeSense technology used within the device costs around $17.

"Basically, the strength of the design is the huge design win for the Israeli fabless company PrimeSense," said Allan Yogasingam, a technical marketing manager at UBM TechInsights. "They've provided the most innovative portion of the Kinect with their image processor, audio and video interface."

"The future applications of this technology could be fascinating. I can see this being incorporated into televisions - allowing users to change the channel by waving their hand, essentially replacing the remote control."

PrimeSense's technology is available for other hardware manufacturers, although Microsoft has the exclusive deal for home videogame consoles.

The Kinect hardware sells for $149 in the US and £129 in the UK.

In a year that would traditionally see the start of a new console cycle, the platform holders have bet their chips on motion control peripherals in an effort to reach out to the ever-shifting casual market.
Both Sony and Microsoft’s new hardware has arrived at retail and consumers are beginning to experience these so-called ‘revolutionary’ motion devices for themselves.
But do they really offer anything significantly different to the Wii?

“Maybe I’m missing something huge, but it hasn’t been done in the last five years, and they’ve tried everything. I don’t think it’s suddenly magically going to happen,” said indie developer Adam Saltsman in a recent conversation I had with him.
And his comments got me thinking. Developers have crafted some of the most innovative games in the medium’s short history during the last decade.
Part of this is down to the current generation of connected consoles, which have helped reinvigorate the indie scene, and with their considerable power there’s no longer a combined cry from the development community that technology is constraining their visions - unless, of course, you’re Kazunori Yamauchi.
Most important of all though, they’ve gradually been perfecting how to get the most engagement out of gaming’s traditional interface: the joypad. Common configurations for camera control and genre-specific actions have been adopted as standard. Distilling game mechanics to just a few buttons or less is another trend that has been widely praised.
So if it’s taken us more than 40 years to reach a point where we understand enough about human interaction with joypads to design modern games around them, how long will it be before we’ve truly cracked motion control?
I’ve played several PlayStation Move games and, while they’re all a lot prettier than the Wii’s, the same old issues crop up. Tumble is one exception that demonstrates some subtly and finesse to motion control. The rest are still trying to figure out what works and what doesn’t, with mixed results. Then again, there are more similarities between Move and the Wii.
Promising the dawn of controller-free gaming, the Kinect motion sensor has sparked a lot of attention. However, the games for it are still marginally different from its competitors and Microsoft faces an even tougher challenge rewiring peoples’ minds to this new interface.
It’s always exciting to receive new hardware, but, to be a devil’s advocate, I not interested in playing another five years of samey motion games. I want to pick up a motion controller and have actions which are as commonplace as right-clicking. With Kinect, I want to infiltrate the Knights’ Guild in the next Elder Scrolls by fooling the guards with my facial expressions - actually, I may just have to place myself in cryosleep for that.
Until we begin to see some genuinely progressive motion games that take us beyond the realm of exaggerated movements and dodgy calibration, motion control may simply remain another exciting twist to the current console race.

A limited edition black Wii bundle that includes Mario Kart Wii and a bunch of accessories will release in Europe on 26th November, Nintendo's announced.

Those accessories are a black Nunchuk, black Wii Remote Plus, black Wii Wheel and Wii Sports.

As a bonus, it'll also include Donkey Kong original edition pre-installed on the Wii "in homage to Mario's first ever appearance".

Nintendo failed to mention a price – we're chasing that up now.

Did you know Mario Kart Wii has sold more than 24 million copies worldwide since its launch? Now you do. Oli awarded it an impressive 8/10 back in 2008.

The UFC fitness game for Kinect and Move and Wii - UFC Personal Trainer - will be released on 1st April 2011, THQ has revealed.

It's going to punch you right in the heart. But that's about all we know. Perhaps we will be able to fight like Kimbo afterward, who knows?

So far we haven't seen the game nor heard anything else about it.

Also out on April Fools' day will be less realistic wrestling game WWE All Stars on PS2, PS3, PSP, Wii and Xbox 360. The back muscles on some of those wrestlers are exquisitely detailed - Ronnie Coleman would be proud.

Another date outed by THQ was "early 2011" for Wii drawing tablet uDraw. Europe hadn't been given a launch window for this before.

Other THQ games out next year include expansion Dawn of War 2: Retribution and shooter Homefront in March. De Blob 2 should also arrive in the spring, although no specific date is available.

Call of Duty: Black Ops sold a whopping 1.4 million copies in its first day on sale in the UK.

That's the biggest UK day one performance ever – it sold 14 per cent more units than Modern Warfare 2 did during its first day on sale.

Let's put that day one sales figure into perspective. Namco Bandai's Enslaved has sold 800,000 units worldwide. MTV Games' Rock Band 3 sold 7386 units for the week ending 30th October in the UK. Microsoft's Xbox 360 exclusive Fable III sold 129,000 units in the UK during its first week on sale.

Figures released by UKIE/GfK Chart-Track to MCV reveal revenues of £58 million.

Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2 sold 1.23 million units on day one, generating £47.7 million.

Treyarch's Black Ops enjoyed the biggest entertainment launch of all time across the US and UK, according to Activision, selling 5.6 million units combined day one and generating $360 million.

Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption, one of 2010's biggest hits, sold in 6.9 million units worldwide during its first three months on sale.

When Activision's financial year ends, how many Black Ops units will have been sold?

Sony Public Relations Manager Alex Armour has officially confirmed that Gran Turismo 5 for PS3 will be released on November 24, 2010.

The date is locked in: Gran Turismo 5 will go on sale throughout North America on Wednesday, November 24th.

That means you’ll be experiencing over 1,000 cars, including karts and select NASCAR cars, scores of tracks, the all-new Course Maker, a dynamic weather system, a robust online community, and everything else Gran Turismo 5 has to offer in less than two weeks.

Along with confirming the November 24th date, Kazunori Yamauchi, President of Polyphony Digital Inc. had this to say:

Gran Turismo 5 is an ambitious project, with challenges and complexities which have made it our version of the Apollo Space Program! When we created the original Gran Turismo back in 1997, we wanted to set a completely new precedent for the racing genre. With the technological leap onto PlayStation 3, our objective with Gran Turismo 5 was to create another great revolution which would not only satisfy our own high expectations, but would meet or even exceed the anticipation of the fans. Satisfying the loyal Gran Turismo followers is at the heart of all of our efforts, which is why it was such a difficult decision to delay the release of the game, and one which we did not take lightly. I can only apologize to everyone for making you wait so long, and I hope that when you try out the wealth of driving experiences available in Gran Turismo 5, you will not be disappointed.

Don’t forget to pre-order Gran Turismo 5 if you haven’t already to ensure your copy day one and receive a voucher for one of five free downloadable cars with a custom Stealth Model skin and a $10 Video Game credit at Amazon.com.
