EA's vision for the Need for Speed franchise involves alternating the developers behind every November release in a similar way Infinity Ward and Treyarch alternate development of Call of Duty games.

This November's game, Hot Pursuit, was created by Criterion. November 2011's game, unannounced at this stage but confirmed to be in EA's plan, will be created by Need for Speed: Undercover developer EA Black Box in Canada.

EA also plans to make a franchise out of side series Need for Speed: Shift – designed to compete with the likes of Forza and Gran Turismo in the authentic simulation racing genre.

EA's new NFS strategy was revealed by executive Patrick Soderlund in a wide ranging new interview with Eurogamer.

"We want to reach a mass-market audience, and Hot Pursuit is a more mass-market appealing product than Shift," Soderlund said.

"We want to come back with an action adventure type of product on an annual basis, but from a developer that's been working on it for a couple of years.

"Maybe there are two or three developers going at it every second year. Then, when the market permits and when we feel ready, we'll come up with Shift versions as well."

Soderlund's new vision for the franchise was born out of a frustration at the quality of previous games in the series.

Developers were only given eight to 10 months to create a NFS game. Under the new strategy multiple developers will each get two years development time, allowing EA to stick to its traditional annual release schedule without reducing quality.

While November NFS games will differ on account of the studios behind them, Soderlund promised gamers they will all share core NFS tenets, and even game features.

"We want Auto Log to be something that follows with the consumer to the next NFS product," he explained. "We want them to use their log in and their details they had from the previous game into the next. If they're a loyal consumer to us we would reward them for that."

Despite the plan, Soderlund refused to confirm that Guildford developer Criterion is now a NFS exclusive studio. "What happens to Criterion in the future, we'll see," he offered. Soderlund also confirmed that the Burnout series, loved by so many of Criterion's fans, is not dead.

"I hope to see more Burnout games in the future. But it's about prioritising what we want to do. At this point we haven't made a decision to whether Burnout does this or that, but it's not dead for sure, no."

And on Shift, which debuted last year with Slightly Mad's effort, Soderlund outlined ambitious plans for EA to overtake Sony's Gran Turismo series and Microsoft's Forza franchise as gaming's leading simulation racer.

"We think we can compete and ultimately become market leading in the simulation authentic motorsport segment," he said.

"One of the strongest points we have is, apart from the fact we have a very talented developer working with us and we now have an established brand underneath the NFS umbrella in that segment, we also have the advantage of being a multi-platform offering.

"Forza can only be bought on Xbox and Gran Turismo is only available on PlayStation. We're the only one right now that is of a significant weight that can offer something up on all those platforms."

Middleware firm Stonetrip has released a major new version of its multi-platform ShiVa3D engine, which most notably includes a unified authoring tool designed to port games to multiple platforms at once.

New plugins for the tool include PhysX, the Fmod sound library and ARToolkt, while ShiVa3D now also allows its users to code directly in either C, C++, Cocoa and Objective-C. It can additionally convert Lua to C++ to boost script performance.

The SDK includes a device input simulator for iPhone, iPad, Android and Palm, allowing those devices to communicate directly with the ShiVa editor.

"This ShiVa3D upgrade brings in some amazing new capabilities – the Unified Authoring Tool on its own, for example, makes creating games across desktop, console and mobile platforms a smooth, efficient, one-stop process," claimed Philip Belhassen, CEO of Stonetrip.

"Many of the new features are in direct response to feedback and consultation with our existing users. Others have been developed and introduced as part of our desire to make ShiVa3D 1.9 the most technologically advanced, most innovative, most reliable and most efficient 3D engine on the market today."

The upgrade is available for free (downloaded via the application itself) to ShiVa's 30,000 existing users, with a variety of licenses (including a royalty-free, multi-platform option) available to newcomers.

The first oral arguments in the Schwarzenegger vs ESA case will be made to the US Supreme Court later today.

At stake is whether controls on the sale and rental of violent games to minors should be banned outright, with many industry figures fearful that the resulting 18+ certificate would result in retailers refusing to stock many titles.

Attempting to block this latest attempt by California to enforce the system nationwide are the Electronic Merchants Association and Entertainment Software Association, supported by numerous expert, consumer and industry coalitions.

Industry luminaries such as Activision boss Bobby Kotick have also spoken out against the act, claiming it would contravene First Amendment rights concerning freedom of speech.

The first hearing is due to occur at 5PM today UK time (1PM EST, 10AM PST, 12PM Central in the US).

Patrick Soderlund, EA's boss of driving and shooting titles, has admitted to disappointment about the critical reception to Medal Of Honor.

"The game didn't meet our quality expectations," he told Eurogamer. "In order to be successful in that space, we're going to have to have a game that is really, really strong."

Nonetheless, he felt that "Medal of Honor is to some extent judged harsher than it should be. The game is better than today's reviews are indicating."

The Afghanistan-set shooter has a Metacritic average of 75 per cent.

While he refused to give sales figures, he claimed they would be revealed in tonight's EA financials. However, he hinted it may not have met expectations.

"I just think the market is obviously telling us they think the game is X. We need to convince the market we can make something they appreciate more, particularly to be able to compete.

"We're taking that seriously. I'm not at all saying Medal of Honor is a failure. It is a successful reboot of that franchise. We're going to be strong in the future."

It's got to the point where we don't even believe reports that come directly from Kazunori Yamauchi anymore. But this is no joke. Gran Turismo 5 development is complete.

Series creator Kazunori Yamauchi has revealed during an interview at Las Vegas car show SEMA today that discs are roll out of the production like literally right now.

"The discs are being stamped as we speak," Yamauchi told Jalopnik when asked for an update on the game's endlessly delayed release.

He didn't actually say when the game would be out - that's an issue even the Gods themselves must still be pondering over. But with the discs in production at least we know Yamauchi and team has stopped faffing about and put their pens down.

GT5 was, until recently, due out today, we remind you as we stare bitterly at our cold, recently unused PS3 (thanks mostly to Halo Reach).

They'd better get those discs to shops before Christmas.

Zelda - Return of the Hylian is now available for the PSP. The game is an SDL port of the french Windows/Mac/Linux game. The game is considered a sequel to the Zelda - A Link to the Past game. If the game proves to be popular on the PSP I will port the 2 follows ups to the game, which are even better (and longer). The link to the game is here:Download Game

You can list any compatibility issues you have with the PSP port either here or the sourceforge site

The original version for PC's is here Zelda ROTH and is the best place to go if you want walkthroughs or any other game specific info.

FYI: The game is at a set resolution of 320x240, and is not scaled to the size of the PSP screens height due to the slow performance of the SDL libraries scaling routine. I might alter the SDL library for hardware scaling if there is enough demand. ...

Wii owners will be able to download demos of key WiiWare titles through a new service that launches this week.

Nintendo announced that the first demos would be made available this Friday, and new ones will be added on a regular basis.

However, the demos will only be available for a limited time, with the line-up being constantly refreshed – similar to the DS demo service currently operating through the Wii’s Nintendo Channel.

The first games to be downloadable will be Furry Legends, Jett Rocket, ThruSpace and Zombie: Panic in Wonderland. Going forward, a list of the titles will be available on the official WiiWare website.

Nintendo has often come under fire for not offering demo versions of its WiiWare titles, prompting a trial that concluded earlier this year. While this announcement may not appease fans of rival systems Xbox Live and PSN – which permanently host any demos uploaded to their servers – it is a step in the right direction. ...

Microsoft has defended its decision to increase the cost of its online gaming service Xbox Live Gold.

The firm justified the price hike with mention of exclusive games such as Gears of War and Halo, and the fact that certain DLC packs arrive on Xbox 360 before rival consoles.

It also attributed the monthly membership rise from £4.99 to £5.99 to infrastructure costs.

Craig Davison from Microsoft’s Xbox Live marketing team told Gamasutra: “There are costs associated with maintaining a service at such a level – such as infrastructure costs. And we’re continuing to bring more and more content.

“Now we get those Call of Duty map packs before anybody else does. We’ve got Gears and Halo as exclusives. We continue to get exclusives on the service as well. And we’ve gone from 400,000 members in our first year to 25m.

“We want to continue to bring that content in. We also want to continue to innovate on all dimensions, whether it’s social, entertainment, or gaming.”
In the US annual Xbox Live memberships rose by $10 to $59.99. However annual Xbox Live Gold subscribers in the UK won’t be charged extra.

Users can also opt for Xbox Live Free membership instead, but this does not allow players to take part in online multiplayer gaming. ...
