Sony has admitted to having a "new product" in development that's linked to Sony Ericsson and Sony Computer Entertainment and the cellphone gaming market.

Could this be the PlayStation Phone that was pictured, denied and then un-denied-but-ignored last week?

"We are trying to figure out what we can do as Sony in this [cellphone] market," stated "Sony execs" during a recent financial call transcribed by Engadget. "There is Sony Ericsson and there is [Sony Computer Entertainment].

"[SCE] moved from Aoyama, the design and headquarters had to come to Sony City. They are closer to the planning and engineering group of Sony, and I think we can better incorporate all of these capabilities. When the timing is right we can probably announce the new product that we have."

Engadget noted that the transcription came from a translator's interpretation of what "Sony execs" said. The exec in question is likely to be chief financial officer Masaru Kato. Seeking Alpha, a professional transcription service, provided an alternative record of the call.

"Mobile gaming is a very important business area for us," said Sony's chief financial officer Masaru Kato. "We started out with the PSP that was our first mobile gaming console, but since then the market as you know has expanded into bigger arenas; gaming on mobile phones, gaming on tablets and on certain mobiles devices.

"The PSP being a proprietary platform was more concentrated I'd say on the core gaming segment than the light game, but now we are addressing that market as well. I can not be specific as to how we will introduce new product to address these markets, but one thing I can say is that we have those markets addressed and we will come out with products and services to capture the broader gaming market."

Despite the statement discrepancies, both accounts suggest that a new mobile gaming device focused on "light games" may be in development at Sony.

What's more, there may also be a tablet under construction behind Howard Stringer's closed doors.

Engadget's transcription added: "As for the tablet ... obviously as a mobile strategy, this occupies a very important position. On one hand there is PC, and on the other hand there is joint venture with Ericsson on smartphone and for the games devices. And tablets fall somewhere in between.

"It is true Apple has led the market, but when we are to enter the market we would like to put a Sony character onto a new product - and that is the effort we are making right now. Therefore I think you can hope for a very good product to come out."

Guess who you'll play as in Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombie mode when co-operatively protecting the Pentagon from zombies:

Former US president Richard Nixon? Yes.

Former US president John F. Kennedy? Yes.

Former US secretary of defense Robert McNamara? Yes.

Cuban revolutionary and subsequent state leader Fidel Castro? Yes.

The four political leaders come together under the premise of a hush-hush meeting at the Pentagon. Cigars are smoked and shady looks traded until the sound of gunfire spooks McNamara. Kennedy passes this off as the sound of a storm until crazed monsters overrun the facility.

"Zombies," states Kennedy as a matter of fact. "Gentlemen, at times like these our capacity to retaliate must be and has to be massive to deter all forms of aggression."

The late president thumps the Great Seal of the United States on the wall and a secret room opens before him. Inside are walls filled with weaponry.

"Gentlemen," says Kennedy, "lock and load."

As with all patent applications, it's a bit early to get too excited about this one, but a recently published filing from Apple dubbed "Nitriding Stainless Steel for Consumer Electronic Products" is one of the more interesting we've seen from the company as of late, especially when you consider its recent acquisition of Liquidmetal's intellectual property. Whereas Liquidmetal promises to let Apple create metal devices that are stronger and not limited to the usual structural or strength limitations found in conventional metals, this new patent application suggests that the company might also be working on a nitride coating for stainless steel that's described as "both scratch and impact resistant." What's more, the application suggests that the coating would not affect the appearance of the underlying stainless steel, and not cause any RF interference either. As pointed out in the application itself, that means it could be used on laptops, portable media players and, yes, even cellphones -- or it could simply be filed away with the countless other applications that haven't seen the light of day. Here's hoping for the former.

There's always been tension between Apple's tight control of the iOS App Store and the DRM-free license requirements of the GPL, and it seems like things are coming to a head over VLC, the open-source video player. As you'll recall, VLC was just released for the iPad and iPhone in the past few months, but the port was done by a company called Applidium -- not VLC developer VideoLAN, which holds the copyright and licenses the code under the GPL. VideoLAN now says that since VLC for iOS includes Apple's FairPlay DRM, it's in violation of the GPL and must be pulled -- and that "concerned users are advised to look for applications on more open mobile platforms for the time being." That's certainly fair enough, although we do find it a bit sensationalist that the takedown notice was sent to Apple and not Applidium, since it's technically Applidium that violated the GPL. Then again, the statement was written by VideoLAN developer Rémi Deni-Courmont, who is also senior MeeGo software engineer, so we can see why he'd be interested in promoting a "more open" project. Whatever the case, it doesn't seem like VLC for iOS is not long for this world -- you'd best go grab it as quickly as possible. Like, now.

Format-holders are damned if they do and damned if they don’t.
Supply enough product for launch, just enough to satisfy day one with some overspill, then you’re branded a so-so hit. Or a borderline failure.
Don’t supply enough product, and you aren’t working hard enough, over-inflating demand, or simply cocked up your manufacturing.
We’ve heard a fair bit of off-the-record grumbling over the last few days about Kinect allocations. Some say a few stores are getting just one unit each, a stark contrast to what’s obviously going on at the likes of GAME and Asda, where November 10th is effectively the launch of a new console.
But I think you can take Microsoft’s recent comments at face value. Bitch and moan all you like about what happens on day one – I’m sure there isn’t as much stock available as Microsoft wanted, and you bet they have looked after preferred retail partners first. They need those people on side for the long-haul.

So no, I don’t think you can accuse the format holder of mishandling this launch. Excitement for Kinect is high and, if the company keeps playing it right, we could be in for a Wii-like boom that we haven’t seen for some time.

Typewriters that can type by themselves are one thing. Typewriters that can type by themselves and play Zork are totally different — the stuff that dreams are made of (at least the dreams of little girls who spent hours in front of a Commodore 64 telling the machine to GO NORTH and such). ...

Microsoft has claimed that its 25 million Xbox Live users are spending 40 hours a month each using Xbox Live, totalling one billion man hours on the service.

The increase is largely down to an increased range of available services, the publisher said, citing a 157 per cent increase in time spent watching film and television on their machines over the last year.

Non-gaming services available on Xbox Live include Facebook, Zune music and film rentals, Sky Player and online radio service Last.fm.

The surge in non-game related use for consoles reflects an attempt by platform holders to consolidate their machines' purpose as a media device. With the launch of Microsoft's Kinect on Thursday, the service will also begin supporting video chat.

Recently, a survey by UK telecoms ombudsman OFCOM revealed that the average Facebook user spends 13 minutes a day on the site, while also claiming that "Videogames consoles are also emerging as important platforms for delivering video to the television".

According to the survey, ten per cent of all traffic from the BBC's iPlayer service now comes from PS3 and Wii consoles, overtaking the seven per cent which originates from Macs.

The WiiWare version of Super Meat Boy won't make its planned November lunch window, according to developer Team Meat.

"attention internets, the wii version is NOT coming out in Nov its impossible. we havent even gotten the size down under 50mb yet (goal=39mb)," the studio said on Twitter.

In better news, the tricky, quirky 2D platformer - which launched a few weeks ago on Xbox Live - is on track to hit PC this month as originally planned. It'll be out via Steam in the last week of November.

Our chums at OXM awarded Super Meat Boy a perfect 10, saying of the title: "This may well be the best tenner you ever spend."

Epic design director Cliff Bleszinski took some time out of his busy schedule recently to chat to the BBC about Gears of War and a host of other gaming subjects.

Among the topics covered in a half hour interview was the evolution of gaming. Asked where he thinks the medium is headed, he said: "I think it's going to a connected world, honestly.

"The next generation of video game consoles might just be things that are like the iPad, where you take your pad with you and when you're at the pub you can play a simpler version of the game and then when you bring it to the house you plug it in a docking station and it pops up on your large TV and you take your traditional controller and you play the more traditional game.

"And then this connects to people's mobile phones so you have maybe a social element; and you do whatever you can to create what is essentially a second life for users who want to seek out that fantasy world and experience."

Bleszinski didn't say it, but it sounds a little like the cross-platform functionality Microsoft's trying to achieve with Xbox Live over Xbox 360 and Windows 7 Phones.

Microsoft is in talks with several European independent studios to bring the Project Gotham Racing series back to the Xbox 360, Develop can reveal.
A trusted source told Develop that Microsoft remains undecided on which studio to hand the project to.
Project Gotham became a multi-million-selling series when it was steered by Liverpool-based studio Bizarre Creations, though the developer’s involvement ceased in 2007.
Turn-10 has for a number of months been considered the most likely candidate to develop future Project Gotham titles. The Microsoft-owned studio has, with the help of extensive outsourcing, developed three successful Forza racing games.
Yet Microsoft’s hunt for a studio partner suggests the project will not be brought in-house.

Bizarre Creations was acquired by Activision in 2007 – a deal which saw its IP scatter across the industry. Sega holds IP rights to action-shooter The Club, while EA owns Boom Boom Rocket. Bizarre retains the Geometry Wars rights while Microsoft owns Project Gotham and all its assets.
Project Gotham Racing, the spiritual successor to Metropolis Street Racer, had bolstered the original Xbox’s launch line-up along with fellow blockbuster Halo. The series went from cult-hit status to global fame, and became a key product in Microsoft’s seminal online service, Live.
Shane Kim, the former boss of Microsoft Game Studios, said in 2008 that Project Gotham Racing would return at some stage.
In 2005 Bill Gates described Project Gotham as his favourite video game.
Develop has contacted Microsoft for comment.
