An iPhone bug already seen when Australia switched between Daylight Savings Time and Standard Time a few weeks ago has now hit Europe. Twitter is alight with reports of recurring iPhone alarms going off an hour later than usual. So even though the iOS clock changed correctly over the weekend, the alarm did not. Thing is, according to a ZDNet Australia report from more than three weeks ago, Apple acknowledged the bug with a promise to fix it with a software update. So why wasn't it rolled out in time to avoid this mess in Europe? Let's see if Apple fixes it before North America makes the switch on November 7th, otherwise, you've been warned.

Update: The fix appears to be as simple as removing and re-adding the alarms. Your boss will be thrilled by the news.

It’s clearly not yet ready to talk openly about either the PlayStation Phone or the PSP 2, but Sony has at least gone as far as to confess that it is developing a smartphone product in correlation with Sony Ericsson.
“As for the new PSP product, as mentioned, I know that you are not asking me to tell you when we will be coming out with a new product, but there is a gaming market based on cellphones, and there are many changes that are being seen [with] Nintendo, as well as ourselves, in the field of the product for the gamers,” company execs stated in an earnings call, as reported by Engadget.
“And there are smartphones and others or even cellphones gaming markets are very popular here in Japan. So the market itself is expanding. It's not that we are not looking into those markets as well. We will look into those markets in trying to develop strategy for the future. Of course, we can't talk about specific products.
“So we are trying to figure out what we can do as Sony in this market. There is Sony Ericsson and there is SCE. They moved from Aoyama, the design and headquarters had to come to Sony City. [So] they are closer to the planning and engineering group of Sony, and I think we can better incorporate all of these capabilities better. When the timing is right we can probably announce the new product that we have.”
That’s not where it ends, however. Sony went on to admit that it also has a tablet computer in production.
“As for tablet – we will not be able to tell you when and what kind of product. But obviously as a mobile strategy, this occupies a very important position. On one hand there is PC, and on the other hand there is [the] joint venture with Ericsson on smartphone and for the games devices.

“And tablets, some fall somewhere in between, and it is true Apple has led the market, but when we are to enter the market, we would like to put a Sony character onto a new product, and that is the effort we are making right now. Therefore I think you can hope for a very good product to come out.”

Logitech has launched the Wireless Solar Keyboard K750 which, the company claims, makes batteries in wireless keyboards a thing of the past.
The K750 gathers enough power from the built-in solar panels to power the device under indoors although Logitech bundle a solar power application which features a lux meter to “help you get the necessary light” and provide information about backup battery levels.
"The keyboard is still the best input device for typing emails and IMs, updating your Facebook page or posting responses to your favourite blogs - and the Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard K750 is the next big innovation in keyboard technology," said Logitech keyboard and desktop marketing boss Denis Pavillard.
The firms first solar keyboard can stay charged for at least three months in total darkness and includes an integrated power indicator which “eliminates surprises”, the company said. Physically the K750 is just a third of an inch thick and offers rounded edges and a low-profile design with what Logitech describes as “Incurve keys.”
Incurve keys have a concave design which support the shape of the typists fingers and help guide to the right keys, said Logitech in a release. Soft, rounded edges also make it easier to move fingers from key to key. Inside the 2.4GHz wireless incorporates 128-bit AES encryption and the bundled Logitech Unifying receiver can support up to Unifying-ready mice and keyboards.

The Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard K750 is expected to hit retail in the US and Europe in November and will cost around $80 or around £50.

Microsoft’s latest revamp of the Xbox 360 dashboard is now live and available to download from Xbox Live.
Online-enabled Xbox 360 owners who turn on their machine from this point will be prompted to download the new software, which amongst other things also prepares their machines for the arrival of Kinect in the UK next week.
As well as a brand new look, chief amongst the other additions in a reworking of the codec powering voice chat. This will provide improved audio quality for those chatting with friends while playing games or watching videos.
The in-dashboard virtual keyboard has been streamlined and the Marketplace UI has been re-arranged to expedite access to content. Also altered is the way in which the console signs up to wireless networks.
It will now be easier to sign in and sign out players’ profiles in the Guide menu, and a brand new sub-menu in which players can easily browse all their 100 per cent completed games has also been introduced.

Changing your Gamertag has also been simplified (though it has not been made any cheaper), with the dash offering up alternatives if the new moniker a player seeks has already been taken.
It had previously been revealed that Avatars will also be getting an interesting tweak – they’ll be getting a bit taller, so as to aid compatibility with Kinect titles that use them. In addition the update will add full Kinect support and the Zune music and movie marketplace.

PlayStation maker Sony has finally offered comment on mounting rumour that it's planning to enter the smartphone market.

In an earnings call following its most recent financials, Sony CFO Masaru Kato and senior general manager of Investor Relations Division Gen Tsuchikawa dealt with the inevitable question about the apparent PSP phone.

"There is a gaming market based on cellphones, and there are many changes that are being seen [with] Nintendo, as well as ourselves, in the field of the product for the gamers. And there are smartphones and others or even cellphones gaming markets are very popular here in japan. So the market itself is very... expanding.

"We will look into those markets in trying to develop strategy for the future. Of course, we can't talk about specific products, but smartphones and tablets... it is difficult to tell you how we can put the games on them, but they are not going to be planned in different parts of our company."

The execs were referring to Sony's restructuring back in April, claiming that its Sony Ericsson phone division was no longer quite as disparate from the company's gaming wing.

"I think we can better incorporate all of these capabilities better... so when the timing is right we can probably announce... the new product that we have."

The company also discussed plans for a tablet device to rival the iPad. "Obviously as a mobile strategy, this occupies a very important position. On one hand there is PC, and on the other hand there is joint venture with Ericsson on smartphone and for the games devices.

"Tablets... fall somewhere in between, and it is true Apple has led the market, but when we are to enter the market, we would like to put a Sony character onto ... a new product, and that is the effort we are making right now. Therefore I think you can hope for a very good product to come out."

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has pointed out to investors that the Wii is still selling better than the PS2 was at this stage of its lifecycle in the US, with 27.14 million units sold after four years at market in comparison to PS2's 22.09 million.

Iwata also made clear that, although sales figures for the console had dipped from peak levels, the January to September sales figures for the consoles fifth year, 2010, were better than those of the PS2, still the best-selling home console overall in North America.

From January until September 2010, Wii sold 3.21 million units, 22 per cent more than the PS2 did in the January to September period of its fifth year.

"I hope each and all these charts will convince you that Wii, as a machine set to welcome its fifth holiday sales season, can never be considered to have lost momentum," Iwata told investors.

The president was also confident that Nintendo would be maintaining their historical sales lead over PS2.

"Wii's cumulative units-sold lead over PS2 until its fourth year in the US market was 23 per cent. For Wii to maintain or extend this 23 per cent lead in its fifth year, Nintendo will need to sell 5.7 million units of Wii hardware in the US, but it looks like that there won't be so much trouble for the company to outnumber this."

The figures were part an extended presentation on the current state of the console market and Nintendo's position in it - an attempt by Mr Iwata to calm investors after Nintendo's relatively negative financial reports were interpreted as a sign of decline by some analysts. Nintendo said the loss as purely due to re-evaluation of assets held in foreign currencies after a strong period of growth for the yen.

Included in the report was an assessment of the DS's dropping figures, in which Iwata conceded that the slowing sales were something to be concerned about, even though market share in the handheld arena had increased for the DS in comparison to the PSP.

"While this year's Nintendo DS hardware unit sales fell in the first nine months in comparison to the same period last year, Nintendo DS increased its market share from 81 per cent to 83 per cent," he said.

"Of course, we cannot afford to feel happy about this increased market share at all now that the total unit sales have declined. Now that Nintendo DS hardware has reached such a high level of its installed base, it has become even more important for us to materialise the remaining sales potential."

Moving on to Europe, Iwata was forced to admit that the sales figures painted a pretty unconvincing picture for Nintendo, showing that the company had lost ground to its rivals in the territory, although he quickly pointed out that the Wii was still dominant.

"Xbox 360 has increased its sales after the model change, particularly in the UK. So far in 2010, PS3 has outperformed its 2009 sales and, quite recently, it has been leading the European market," Iwata said.

"When we make a year-on-year comparison, Wii showed a decrease and both Xbox 360 and PS3 showed increases, but the fact that Wii has been the best-selling home console hardware with the largest share has not changed."

The DS's position in Europe also came under scrutiny, with Iwata pointing out that, although rife piracy had undoubtedly affected software sales, illegal copying couldn't account for the total reduction - instead he identified a continuing increase in the astuteness of the DS's audience, tacitly admitting that some of the DS's previous software dominance had been down to market saturation and some naivety on the part of the consumer.

"The days when any Nintendo DS software could sell are over and consumers have become more selective," Iwata confessed, "and, as a result, the gap in the unit sales between hit titles and non-hit titles has expanded and, almost at the same time, illegal copies have spread across Europe. Also, after the 'Nintendogs' and 'Brain Training' software titles showed explosive sales there, we have been unable to offer another software title that European consumers really feel like purchasing."

THQ's WWE games are to receive a substantial increase in marketing supporting from the wrestling brand.

Smackdown vs RAW and WWE All Stars will be promoted on World Wrestling Entertainment DVDs, its website, in the standard and pay-per-view TV shows, and at 40 live events this year.

This means a degree of ongoing marketing, as opposed to the former strategy of concentrating promotion around launch week.

"This strategic marketing agreement reflects the benefits of working more closely with WWE to maximize the interactive entertainment experience for fans of this leading sports entertainment brand," said THQ President and CEO Brian Farrell."

"We expect to increase awareness of our games through this new integrated program. "

Added WWE CEO Donna Goldsmith, "Working together, we plan to give our fans more access to all of the great interactive entertainment being created by THQ, as well as develop robust promotions to increase awareness of all WWE platforms."

The two firms will also partner on further strategies, including social media, iOS apps and online community features.

Said Farrell, "We are expanding our WWE video game offerings with social applications and brand extensions to help WWE fans enjoy different interactive experiences throughout the year."

WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2011 debuted at seven in this week's UK software chart.

Xbox 360 platform holder Microsoft has admitted that the review scores for some of its Kinect launch titles are unlikely to match the adulation given to the likes of Halo Reach – but that it won’t affect their performance at retail.
“For us, these are different types of titles and experiences than maybe some of the games traditionally that are targeted to the core market,” chief of staff for Microsoft's interactive entertainment business Aaron Greenberg told Eurogamer.
“So the correlation between a review score for Halo: Reach and sales is very high, but Kinect Sports is more about just having fun.
“I don't know how reviewers will grade those games because they're so unique and so different to what the reviewers have played with controllers. We'd love to see great reviews but I don't think you'll see the same type of correlation between reviews and actual sales of the game, would be my guess.”
When asked if he is nervous about the potential critical response, Greenberg responded: “I'm not nervous. I know what the media thinks; we know they love Dance Central, we've heard they think it's the killer app. They're excited about Child of Eden. We've even had a lot of good feedback for Kinectimals from the core.”
