Fan Axxess allows gamers to obtain all DLC for WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2011 for single 800 MSP / $9.99 payment

As publishers continue to dabble with new ways of offering ‘added value’ to gamers through digital content, THQ has revealed a new model to accompany the release of WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2011.

Those who buy the game will be offered the chance to buy a ‘Fan Axxess’ pass. Doing so will allow them to download all future DLC for the title at no additional cost. Content will include playable characters, alternate costumes, new arenas, a character customiser and an in-game badge to “recognise the game's biggest supporters”.

Fan Axxess will cost 800 Microsoft Points, or $9.99 on PSN.

“The Fan Axxess program for WWE SmackDown vs Raw 2011 offers consumers a very attractive value proposition to significantly enhance the virtual WWE experience,” THQ’s executive VP of core games Danny Bilson stated.

“We have some of the most passionate fans in the industry, and we are pleased to offer them an opportunity to access premium gameplay content, customization features and recognition for their loyalty for one price point.”

THQ has already announced that the game will ship with a single-use DLC code that is required to access the online mode. Pre-owned buyers will have to pay extra to take the game online.

How do you feel about this if other developers/publishers goes this route? Let us know what you think about this DLC deal.

Development around the original Cell processor hasn't stalled and IBM will continue to develop chips and supply hardware for future gaming consoles, a company executive said.

IBM is working with gaming machine vendors including Nintendo and Sony, said Jai Menon, CTO of IBM's Systems and Technology Group, during an interview Thursday. "We want to stay in the business, we intend to stay in the business," he said.

The Cell processor, which was developed by IBM in conjunction with Sony and Toshiba, made its first appearance in Sony's PlayStation 3 gaming console in 2005. The hybrid chip includes processor cores based on IBM's Power architecture. However, there have been questions surrounding Cell's future and its implementation in gaming consoles. Consoles such as Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii also use IBM processors, though not the Cell chip.

IBM confirmed in a statement Friday that it continues to manufacture the Cell processor for use by Sony in its PlayStation 3. IBM also will continue to invest in Cell as part of its hybrid and multicore chip strategy, Menon said.

"I think you'll see [Cell] integrated into our future Power road map. That's the way to think about it as opposed to a separate line -- it'll just get integrated into the next line of things that we do," Menon said. "But certainly, we're working with all of the game folks to provide our capabilities into those next-generation machines."

Menon did not elaborate on specific chip and hardware developments for gaming systems, but said its Power processors have capabilities that are similar to those of the Cell chips.

"The kinds of things you used to be able to do with the Cell you can do in ... [the] Power line," Menon said.

There are also giant servers that will provide gaming capabilities through the cloud for which the company will also provide hardware, Menon said.

"Some of this consumer stuff is also a cloud play. There are giant servers out there that provide some of the gaming capability. Some of that will come through cloud-based offerings as well," Menon said.

The company earlier this year released the Power7 processor, and is working on the next-generation Power8 processor. IBM is putting a lot of resources into developing Power8, and the company is in line to release the new chip in the same time frame as earlier processors, Menon said.

The company has a history of releasing chips every three years, which points to a Power8 chip release for 2013.

The PlayStation 3 combines Power processor cores with specialized hardware to deliver advanced gaming capabilities. IBM is trying to increase its focus on developing multiple processing components in systems to intense graphics requirements and specific application needs.

"There are many things we are doing that will impact the consumer," Menon said.

Everyone knows CD sales are down. The solution? Bundle it with a videogame. That seems to be the trend these days, the latest one coming from Lil Wayne, who has partnered with the makers of "Def Jam Rapstar" and Best Buy to give away his latest album "I Am Not A Human" to anyone buying the game. There are limitations. The giveaway only lasts from Oct. 12 through Oct. 19, and only in Best Buy locations.

The deal was struck between Rapstar creators Def Jam and 4mm Games, and Wayne's label Cash Money Records. Wayne's single "A Milli" is also featured in the game, which is a sort of rap-centric karaoke game that lets users record and share video of themselves performing.

The news comes on the heels of a similar album-game bundle from Soundgarden. The reunited group is piggybacking on the newly released "Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock" videogame, attaching a copy of the greatest hits retrospective "Telephantasm" to 1 million versions of the game.

That was a one-week exclusive made available to "Guitar Hero" fans a week before the album was otherwise available for sale. Soundgarden also provided an exclusive track to the game, "Black Rain," and the full "Telephantasm" tracklist is available in the game as downloadable content.

This practice of bundling albums with games inspired the RIAA to revise its rules on awarding Gold and Platinum status to albums. "Telephantasm" for instance was given Platinum status as a result of the 1 million bundle, as the units were non-returnable. However, since the product was scanned by retailers as a video game, sales were not able to be counted by SoundScan as an album purchase and therefore were not reflected on Billboard's charts.

So far, these experiments have been limited to music-focused games like "Guitar Hero" and "Rapstar." It will be interesting to see if artists start doing the same with other types of games that enjoy even more widespread popularity, such as the "Modern Warfare" franchise or other action based titles.

Apple has loosened its tight grip on the iPhone and allowed a third party to develop a health device that exchanges data with the iPhone and their hardware. Is this the start of a trend for Apple that will relax constraints on non-audio Bluetooth use, or is this an exception? Does anyone know of any other devices for the iPhone that allows non-audio Bluetooth transmission of data?"
Reader climenole points out an article about another health-sensor system, dubbed a "body area network," that is built to work with Android devices, but not via Bluetooth.

The PSP2 is already in the hands of developers, but will Sony take the right direction in the portable sector? Following a recent op-ed on fixing the PSP business, leading game industry analysts came to the consensus that the best avenue for Sony to take is to offer a PlayStation Phone, and a strong partner like Google would do just the trick. 'Sony has the opportunity to redefine the portable games category. I think the best move would be to get out in front of Microsoft's inevitable Xbox LIVE Arcade Mobile and take on the App Store and carrier deck portals. ... They could put out a proper PlayStation Phone (and a PlayStation Pad) but these should compete with smartphones and tablets, not dedicated gaming devices. To do this quickly, Sony could partner with Google and take advantage of Android's considerable momentum,' said Billy Pidgeon of M2 Research

American peripherals specialist Performance Designed Products has announced the launch of a branded Wii headset ahead of the arrival of Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops on November 9th.
Called the Headbanger headset (pictured), it allows for multiplayer online chat in the Wii version of the shooter. It will hit US some time in October for $24.99 and should be available in the UK before the game debuts worldwide.
The fully licensed device plugs in via USB, includes a built-in microphone and a ten-foot cable.
“The Headbanger Headset brings online multiplayer chat to the Wii, and what better game to introduce it to the world than Call of Duty: Black Ops?” PDP’s senior executive VP and CTO Tom Roberts stated.
“Serious Call of Duty players require voice chat for team-based online games and we’re making sure that they can be heard loud and clear.”

SEGA will focus on its "three pillars" as it looks to grow: Sonic the Hedgehog, Football Manager and Total War, the publisher's new European boss has revealed.

It's promised gamers that it will work hard to make the three franchises as big as possible as it aims to cement its position as a "successful, medium-sized publisher".

SEGA launched a raft of new intellectual property in recent months, including the disappointing Alpha Protocol. PlatinumGames' Vanquish is due out later this month.

In the future, however, it'll give most love to established franchises.

"Let me be clear again. In Europe, SEGA has three pillars in Sonic, Football Manager and Total War. We are going to be working very hard to make these franchises bigger," Jurgen Post told MCV.

"We know we have Sonic and Football Manager this year, a new Total War next year, and a new Sonic and Virtua Tennis next year. These are the kind of titles that will allow us to focus on being healthy and profitable."

Three Sonic games are due out between now and the end of the year: downloadable game Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1, Wii and DS game Sonic Colours and Kinect title Sonic Free Riders.

Sports Interactive's Football Manager 2011 is due out 5th November. Creative Assembly's Shogun 2: Total War will release next year.

Post said SEGA's growth since the Japanese company's exit from the console manufacturing business in 2001 had seen it evolve.

"There has been a big jump forward, thanks very much to Mario and Sonic," he said.

"Now we have that franchise, other Sonic plans, plus some big IPs like Football Manager, Virtua Tennis, Total War and more.

"The biggest change since I first started at SEGA is that it has gone from a very small publisher to a successful, medium-sized publisher. The challenge now is about sustaining our position and doing the right things going forward."

Konami's revamp of the old X-Men arcade game - coincidentally named X-Men Arcade - will be released this autumn on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade.

We also now know that the developer is Backbone Entertainment - the studio favoured by Capcom for all things PSN/XBLA: Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, 1942: Joint Strike, Commando 3. There's some experience on the two platforms, then.

Available to play in X-Men Arcade will be Cyclops, Colossus, Dazzler, Nightcrawler, Storm and Wolverine. They'll need to work together to take down the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, key enemies in which are Pyro, Blob, Wendigo, Mystique, White Queen, Juggernaught and Magneto.

Up to four people can co-operate locally, and up to six online. Online drop-in means you can hop in and out without faff. Just select your preferred amount of players, difficulty and level and you'll be matched accordingly. Alternatively you can create your own and play host.

X-Men Arcade will be wrapped up in high-definition graphics, which span gameplay, HUD and menus. There's leaderboard support, too.

Although evidence continues to mount that Sony may be planning to bring in a new-generation handheld, the elderly PSP looks to have had a bumper year in Japan.

Hirokazu Hamamura, CEO of Enterbrain (publisher of Famitsu magazine) was highly optimistic about the PlayStation Portable's recent performance, reports Andriasang.

"This year will be the PSP's biggest year," he told an audience of journalists and analysts at his twice-yearly industry seminar on Friday.

Key to this was the success of third party titles, in sharp contrast to Nintendo's rival DS. Monster Hunter Portable 3rd looks to be best-selling PSP game of 2010 in Japan, with Hamamura predicting possible sales of 5 million - a million more than its predecessor.

Hamamura also predicted that "the PSP will expand its market," pointing to the 500,000 sales success of Monster Hunter spin-off Poka Poka Felyne Village. Publisher Capcom has claimed this has attracted a 50 per cent female audience, thanks to more accessible play and a Hello Kitty tie-in.

The PSP has now sold over 15 million units across its various SKUs in Japan, 1.5 million of which were this year. Combined Japanese DS sales for the entirety of 2010 look set to outdo it by a few hundred thousand, however.

US phone and internet provider AT&T will release its U-verse streaming television platform for Xbox 360 on Friday.

The IPTV service is the first time American 360 owners can watch broadcast TV via their console, and also offers on-demand programming. Xbox IPTV was at one point due from BT, but plans were scrapped.

The service is not free even for those with existing U-verse subscriptions. New sign-ups require a $99 installation charge on top of a monthly AT&T internet fee, while current U-verse customers are subject to an additional $55 to activate it on 360.

U-verse involves a leased set-top box which can access 130 channels, many of which are HD, and record shows to its hard drive. The Xbox 360 version requires that there be at least one of these receivers in the home already, but is not subject to an additional monthly fee. "AT&T has a legacy of innovation and teamed up with Microsoft to build a differentiated all-IP TV offering to enable the future of TV services for their customers," said Andreas Mueller-Schubert, Microsoft's general manager of the Media Platforms Business.

"We're excited to extend that relationship today through new initiatives that make TV anywhere a possibility, delivering rich entertainment experiences for consumers across multiple screens, inside and outside the home."

AT&T also plans to offer the service on the new Windows Phone 7 later this year.
