Sony Ericsson has launched a 'micro display' for Android phones, which can be worn around the wrist like a watch.
LiveView lets use wirelessly pair up to a compatible handset and then read text messages, see incoming calls and keep up to date with social network alerts. It can also control music and calendar functions.
SE wants third parties to ake their apps work with the concept. And to find LiveView enabled applications, it has developed the LiveWare Manager app, which scans Android Market and presents compatible apps to the user.
Mikael Henriksson, head of creation and offering planning at Sony Ericsson Extras, said: "LiveView is the first Sony Ericsson accessory to be compatible with the open Android platform which gives developers an opportunity to be creative and develop the next must-have innovative application."
LiveView will be available in stores from Q4, 2010.

Moms, this might be tough to hear: your son playing hours of video games won't necessarily turn his brain to mush.

In fact, playing action video games rewires how the brain steers hand-eye coordination.

When controlling objects with a joystick, experienced video game players don't use the side of their brain, where visual information guides muscle movement for most people, but employ the front of their brain normally involved in higher-level decision making, Italian researchers report in Cortex.

Using video games to reroute brain cells could help Alzheimer's patients rely on different parts of their brains to move around and pick up objects.

Register with Chicago Tribune and receive free newsletters and alerts >>

In the study, 26 young men used joysticks to move a cursor while they stared in another direction. Half of the twenty-somethings were experienced video gamers — who had played at least four hours of video games per week for the last three years — and the other half were not. Both groups trained on the console until they were equally proficient in accuracy and movement time.

Researchers watched their brains light up under an fMRI machine while completing tasks such as looking to the right while moving an object to the left.

The experienced video gamers relied on the pre-frontal cortex, a brain region known for personality and decision-making, when they performed the tasks. The novices relied on the parietal cortex, the region typically involved in hand-eye coordination.

Earlier in September, University of Rochester cognitive scientists found that practicing fast-paced video games helps the brain make decisions quicker.

Researchers asked 18- to 25-year-old males, all inexperienced video gamers, to either play a slow-paced game ("The Sims 2") or a fast-paced game (either "Call of Duty 2" or "Unreal Tournament").

The young men who played the fast, action-packed games answered problem-solving questions 25 percent faster, the researchers reported in Current Biology.

They suggest the quick decision-making skills could be useful for surgeons or soldiers.

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick impressed by Kinect and Move, but reveals the publisher is working on new bespoke peripherals.

Speaking during an exclusive interview in issue 220 of Edge (which will reach UK newsagent stands tomorrow), Activision Blizzard CEO, Bobby Kotick, says that he doesn't think that Kinect and Move will spell the end for peripherals. Kotick reveals that the publisher will continue to produce them where appropriate and that it has new devices ready for next year.

"If the fantasy is to unleash your inner rock star, you need a guitar, or you need a mic, or a DJ booth," says Kotick. "Kinect and Move are superb for dance games - we don’t need to make a dance pad if you have Kinect. So as long as we think a peripheral is going to deliver something that’s compelling and interesting and innovative we’ll support it. For ten iterations of Tony Hawk, you weren’t really skateboarding, it was… thumbing.

"When we finally figured out how to build a skateboard - I think we probably could have done a better job on the first game, but I think we’ve nailed it on Shred - that experience, you just can’t duplicate it. To me, that’s moving the medium forward, and physical interfacing I think is a really important part of the future. So, yes, we’re going to keep making physical interface products if we think that’s going to enhance the experience - and we have some really cool ones for next year."

Kotick is impressed by the potential of the Sony and Microsoft motion controllers, as well as 3D, but believes that Kinect is priced too high.

"I think that 3D is super-compelling," he explains. "The push has come from film but, personally, I find that live action in 3D is disruptive to the storytelling. But games in 3D are incredible. And when you see bullets whizzing past your ear, or imagine you’re playing Guitar Hero over the internet and your bass player is right next to you, that’s a really great enhancement of a game experience. I think 3D was made for videogames, and I’m very excited about that. With Kinect… I love it as an idea, but [Microsoft has] got to get the price down."

PSP2 development kits have reportedly been widely distributed to first and third party studios, with Sony said to be keen to offer a “significant launch window line-up” for the as-yet-unannounced handheld.

That’s according to multiple Develop sources, who claim the platform holder is intent on making a big software impact at launch.

While Sony has yet to officially announce PSP2, one developer went on the record about the handheld last month.

“… We have a PSP2 in the house and we’re looking at the engine, like what can it support,” Shaun Himmerick, executive producer at Netherrealm Studios, said during an interview about the Mortal Kombat franchise reboot. “Always a big thing for us is the performance… PSP2 looks like it’s a pretty powerful machine.”
