We know the hazards that can befall retro gaming enthusiasts -- janky third party consoles and KIRFy handhelds not the least among them -- so it's nice to see someone put some real thought in their hardware. Available in retro-futurist red or sober, serious black, the RetroN 3 gaming system is compatible with your Nintendo, Sega Genesis, and SNES cartridges. And if that weren't enough for you (it seldom is, is it?) you can use a pair of the original controllers from either of those three systems. If that seems too awesome, it also packs its own wireless controllers. Available now for $70.

We just saw Flash 10.1 ported to the iPad demonstrated in video form by Comex, and now you can get in on the action too, as long as your iPad is jailbroken. It's called Frash, and while the plugin is still pretty early and doesn't do video playback yet, you can definitely play games and other animations right now, and we're told video support is forthcoming. Okay, so let's try this out, shall we? It's not point-and-click simple, but it's not that hard, either. Full instructions after the break.

Can't find an official iPhone 4 bumper? Driving yourself mad trying to give your new smartphone white glove treatment? Fret not, as a couple of case makers have outed new iPhone 4 clothing that's meant to specifically dodge those naughty reception issues that seem to occur whenever your sweaty palm makes contact with that now infamous metal band. Element Case -- the same folks responsible for the downright lust-worthy Joule stand for iPad -- has just revealed their first iPhone 4 case, the Vapor (shown above). The company claims that its $79.95 enclosure provides an aircraft-grade, CNC'd aluminum frame lined with a shock-absorbent material, the latter of which "addresses iPhone 4 reception issues caused by direct hand to phone cradling." For now, it's up for pre-order (shipments are expected to start next week) in black / black and black / pink, with more colors to become available in the future. As for Ivyskin? It's stepping things up even further by naming its product the "iPhone 4 Reception Case." No need for subtly, we see. Hailed as the "world's thinnest polycarbonate shell" for Apple's latest iDevice, this here sleeve is the one to get if you're look to minimize added bulk and not cover up any of Cupertino's design cues. Best of all, this one retails for just $14.99 and ships with both front and back scratch-free body armors. Crazy that it has come to this, you know?

Given the number of users and $50-a-year subscription fee, it's hardly a surprise that Microsoft is pulling in a ton of cash from Xbox Live, but it looks like the service has recently crossed a significant milestone: the $1 billion mark. That's what Bloomberg estimates, at least, based on the number of paid users (about 12.5 million), and a recent statement from Microsoft's Dennis Durkin, who said that sales of downloadable content had topped subscription revenue for the first time. That translates to about $600 million from subscription revenue, and at least $600 million from other sales, for a grand total somewhere north of $1.2 billion. Can't really blame Sony for following its lead, can you?

Id Software's first person shooter Rage has won three separate awards at the E3 2010 Game Critics Awards, including Best Console Game, Best Action Game, and a "Special Commendation for Graphics".

Although announced in 2007, little was seen of the post-apocalyptic title, which also includes racing and action role-playing elements, until this year's E3. The game was the only title to win three awards, with its five nominations also leading the pack.

The new Nintendo 3DS portable picked up two awards, including the prestigious Best of Show and Best Hardware - beating both Kinect and Move. Harmonix's Dance Central also won two awards, with Best Original Game and "Best Motion Simulation Game".

Valve's Portal 2 was the only other nominee to win two awards, picking up Best PC Game and Best Action/Adventure Game. Electronic Arts was the most successful publisher at the awards with four wins out of 15 nominations, its best result since 2007.

The Xbox 360 format saw the greatest number of wins, with 10 exclusive or multiformat titles in the list of winners. The PlayStation 3 and PC both won nine, with the Wii picking up three, the Nintendo DS two and the PSP one.

The awards are voted on by a group of 31 exclusively American journalists, from both mainstream and specialist press outlets. A full list of judges, nominees and previous winners can be found at the official website.

Developers will be involved "at the very beginning of concepting new hardware", says Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida - as he admits the company is currently work on new platforms.

Speaking to website Develop, Yoshida admitted that previous Sony home consoles have been difficult to develop for and had suffered by not being designed with enough input from software engineers.

"When Ken Kutaragi moved on and Kaz Harai became the president of SCE, the first thing Kaz said was, 'get Worldwide Studios in on hardware development'," Yoshida said.

"So he wanted developers in meetings at the very beginning of concepting new hardware, and he demanded SCE people talk to us [developers]," he explained.

"I’m spending more time on the hardware platform,” added Yoshida. "Connecting hardware guys to developers. That’s my major role now, and Move is one of those new ways of developing platforms."

Yoshida admitted that he was currently involved in plans for new Sony hardware, saying: "We are undergoing many activities that we haven’t yet been talking about in public. Some future platform related activities.”

Although the research and development departments of all three console manufacturers are constantly prototyping new devices, it is unusual for Sony to refer specifically to such work. Rumours suggest that a new PSP is likely to be the company's next major new platform - with a reveal at this autumn's Tokyo Game Show thought likely by some.

As a matter of course the company will be also involved in ongoing development for an eventual PlayStation 4, although an actual release is not expected for several years.

Sony's "It only does everything" PS3 slogan could apply to its next portable console if a new report is true.

According to Wall Street Journal (via Kotaku): "Sony is developing a portable device that shares characteristics of hand-held game machines, e-book readers and netbook computers, according to people familiar with the matter."

WSJ didn't elaborate on exactly what that means for the handheld, or even if it was referring to the next PSP or simply a new device that's capable of gaming along with other functions, considering that statement could be used to describe a tablet device, phone, notebook or any other wireless device.

But it comes tucked away in a larger report speculating that Sony and Nintendo are in discussions with wireless carriers over including 3G connections in their next gaming handhelds.

WSJ goes on to note: "Some Sony e-book readers already come with 3G connections but it isn't clear if a new wireless gadget will use carrier networks."

The Nintendo 3DS and Sony's next PSP system may feature constant connections to the internet via 3G networks, according to a report.

Video game platform holders are apparently in talks with wireless phone carriers over the possibility of including 3G internet connections in new portable systems.

This is according to the president of Japanese wireless carrier NTT DoCoMo Inc, Ryuji Yamada, who's told the Wall Street Journal: "Videogame makers know that in order for portable game machines to take the next step forward, they need wireless communication."

He added: "We are discussing this with various players," although he refused to specify the 'players' to which he refers. But WSJ highlights Nintendo's interest in wireless improvements on 3DS, and Sony's netbooks and e-book readers that already feature 3G connections. Both companies declined to comment on the story.

WSJ notes that Nintendo's Hideki Konno said during E3 that there will "probably be discussions" with carriers in future, while president Satoru Iwata last year expressed interest in Amazon's e-reader Kindle, which bundled 3G wireless costs in with downloadable purchases so that users never needed to pay a monthly connection fee.

iPhone and iPad both use 3G networks to provide online-anywhere multiplayer gaming experiences (such as in games like Archetype - a competent FPS that features 10-player online matches playable anywhere via 3G).

Can Nintendo and Sony, the gaming specialists, afford to allow Apple's increasingly competent gaming systems to keep such a significant advantage over its dedicated console?

R.U.S.E. will make use of PlayStation Move, Ubisoft has revealed at a press event in London.
It is the latest in a line of products aimed at core gamers that makes use of PlayStation Move. It further backs up SCEE President Andrew House’ claim that Move will be ideal for core games such as SOCOM.
However, there are no plans to add support for Microsoft’s Kinect. R.U.S.E. senior producer Mathieu Girard told Eurogamer that having to stand while playing Kinect was a stumbling block.
There is so far only a smattering of core games currently being worked on for Kinect, with the majority of the games aimed at the fitness, family and casual audiences.
