It’s the game many regard as the greatest ever made, and now David Braben’s defining space epic Elite is making its way to iPhone thanks to Manomio’s C64 emulator app.
TouchArcade reports that a list of upcoming new titles temporarily appeared on the titles in-game store, with Elite being amongst those mentioned.
Other titles seemingly on the way include International Karate, Micropose Soccer, Jumpman, Druid, Wizball and Trailblazer.

The additions come as part of the v1.4 update for the app C64. New features include OpenFeint leaderboard integration, with some titles also getting OpenFeint Achievement functionality.
The update is also said to increase the overall performance of the app – owners of either the iPhone 3GS or the latest iPod Touch models can expect titles to run at around 50fps.
Manomio’s C64 app is now an established favourite on the App store after a troubled history. Its development saw it removed from the portal not once, but twice before Apple was comfortable with its emulating properties.

We covered the release of the PS3 Exploit release last night for the PS3 and the Gamesindustry site has posted an article about it:

PlayStation 3 hacker George Hotz has released his exploit for the console, inviting others to expand on and develop his work.

"Hopefully this will ignite the PS3 scene, and you will organise and figure out how to use this to do practical things, like the iPhone when jailbreaks were first released," wrote Hotz on his blog. "I have a life to get back to and can't keep working on this all day and night."

According to Digital Foundry's Richard Leadbetter, writing for Eurogamer.net, "the released hack contains details of the interface Hotz created and sample code for adding complete read/write access to the PS3 via OtherOS/Linux. It also explains how the hardware is used in opening up the system, with Hotz glitching the memory bus to effectively turn a small hole in RAM into one that encompasses the entire system."

Hotz confirmed over the weekend that he had hacked the console, saying that he did it out of curiosity and did not intend to get involved in any games piracy.

"I'm not going to personally have anything to do with that," said Hotz. "To tell you the truth, I've never really played a PS3. I have one game, but I've never really played it."

Although Hotz claims the PS3 has now been hacked, the internal decryption algorithms of the CELL processor are impenetrable and no homebrew code has yet been seen running on the console.

"Hacking is breaking the security of the system, which I have done," said Hotz. "I'm not spending my time writing custom firmware, ISO loaders, and an open SDK. Leave that to somebody else...

"I didn't give up, I'm just not spending all day on it any more. I have other things to do. Just because I don't do something doesn't mean I can't do it. Unlike the iPhone, there isn't a clear definition of hacked (as in unlocked or jailbroken). This is code execution at the highest privilege level."

Web entrepreneur claims the studio will unveil an iTablet edition of Farmville tonight
Social game studio Zynga will unveil an iTablet version of its social game Farmville during tonight’s Apple press conference, bloggers claim.
Alleged details of Apple’s long-rumoured tablet device were divulged last night by the prominent web entrepreneur Jason Calacanis, who made a number of claims about its hardware and features.
His verified Twitter account also wrote, among other things:
“Custom Farmville app is insane. Farmville for Apple tablet is a huge game changer. I know for a fact that Mark Pincus is onstage tomorrow with Steve Jobs.”
Zynga’s flagship title Farmville is a social phenomenon. In January the game clocked 74.5 million active users. Zynga itself is fast becoming one of the most lucrative social game developers in a new era of game studios.

Its nearest rival Playfish was recently bought by EA for at least $300 million, a move which encapsulated the sub-sector’s growing influence on the wider industry.
Yet Zynga’s super-selling social games are likely only part of Apple’s plan for gaming on the tablet device. Calacanis’ long list of tweets continued to suggest so:
“Apple tablet connects to other tablets over wi-fi for gaming,” he said.
“There will be LAN parties with these things, people playing FPSes. Apple tablet games are sick. Basically Nintendo Wii-level innovation.”
Zynga is currently looking to restore its reputation after being linked to an ad scam operation.

Ubisoft has called on its fellow publishers to keep a close check on their development costs - so that game prices remain fair to consumers.

UK boss Rob Cooper said there was "no point spending more on products if... what the public pays for our wares becomes horrifically high".

    Somebody shake the man's hand.

"Where once fuzzy pixels danced around on the screen, now we expect everything from the visuals and sound effects to the dialogue of our characters - along with the emotions they can portray - to be more finely tuned," he told MCV. "All of these touches increase the studio costs exponentially so we will all be looking at ways to trim them when we can.

"But there is no point spending more on our products if the profit margins evaporate to a trickle or the prices that the public have to pay for our wares become horrifically high."

Cooper added: "Smart publishers will also ensure they have found ways to delicately balance the risk of creating bold new IPs against established franchises - it is something Ubisoft has so far managed pretty well."

Wow: A publisher boss publicly saying he wants to look out for his consumers' wallets.

Makes a nice change, right readers?

Web 2.0 luminary Jason Calacanis spills details on pricing and features
US web entrepreneur and blogger Jason Calacanis has been spending the morning tweeting details about Apple's new tablet device, which he claims Apple gave him ten days ago.
"Yes, it's true... I've been beta testing the Apple tablet for the past two weeks and it's amazing," he tweeted eight hours ago, before claiming he couldn't break his NDA with Apple. And then smashing it to smithereens.
In a succession of tweets, he claimed that:
    * The tablet has a built-in HDTV tuner and PVR.
    * It will cost $599, $699 or $799 depending on size and memory.
    * It's running a version of the iPhone OS, and can run several apps simultaneously.
    * The battery life is "great" in e-book mode, but only 2-3 hours when using Wi-Fi or playing games.
    * It has two cameras, one on the front and one on the back. There are also thumbpads on each side, and fingerprint security.
    * The screen is OLED, and there's a solar pad on the back for recharging.
    * There's a customised Farmville app for the device, which Zynga CEO Mark Pincus will be demoing live on-stage tonight.

Tales of Monkey Island: Bringing Point-and-Click back.

Before people read this, I must confess a personal bias. I personally loved all the other Monkey Island games and the prospect of reviewing a game that was to continue such a favoured series was hugely appealing to me. I will try and keep this review unbiased but on a last note before I begin, if you haven’t played the other Monkey Island games and you enjoy this title, it’s definitely worth the purchase.

Tales of Monkey Island is the newest instalment of the immensely popular Point-and-Click adventure series from Lucas Arts. You play as Guybrush Threepwood, a “mighty pirate”, who prefers to use his head instead of his cutlass to solve any of life’s difficulties. In previous instalments of the series we have learned that he has a steady and persistent cast, for example, his wife Elaine Threepwood, a pirate far more at home with violence, the Voodoo Lady, Guybrush’s guide in this world (and the next) and the fearsome LeChuck, Guybrush’s nemesis. Tales of Monkey Island has entered a new realm of distribution however, offering the game in five chapters, all downloadable straight to your PC. In each of these chapters, Guybrush must face mind stretching puzzles and use whatever is available to him to proceed along his quest.

The gameplay is simplistic with the cursor lighting up as you roll over interactive objects and their names popping up to identify them and movement is controlled by holding the left mouse button down and dragging it in the direction you want Guybrush to walk in. This takes a little while to get used to but becomes second nature very quickly. Then you have the inventory of the items which you steal, borrow, pillage, earn and find throughout the game to aid you in your quest. The only other interaction you control is how you hold a conversation. This simplistic system is just what the game needs as, with every other game in the series, the best part about Monkey Island is the humour and wit. This is exactly the kind of game that you can use to just whittle away hours from a tough day with little input from you. The series is famed for the classic one-liners that is sprouted by the characters, with Guybrush taking center stage as one of the most likable character to be created in the digital realm. The only thing that worries me about this is that some of the jokes are derived from the previous instalments and this may take away some of the charm for newcomers to the series.

The graphics are simply beautiful with the world captured in the playful style that the story is portrayed in and they reflect the idea that the game is something to be enjoyed at your pleasure rather than mind-blowing special effects to keep your adrenaline high. The characters all have very definite styles and while the lip synching is nowhere near perfect (or even close for that matter) we can get definite bursts of identifiable emotion when they are portrayed.

The audio in the game is one of my favourite aspects. The cast have been excellently selected to compliment the physical nature and personality of their respective characters. Dominic Armato (Guybrush) in particular does an amazing job portraying the Caribbean’s most endearing pirate. The music, while sometimes over the top, does the job of getting the scene’s temperament just right. In the frequent scenes of battle between Guybrush and LeChuck, we get ominous tones which still have a playful air to them, cementing the idea that the game is still just out to make you laugh.

The chapters can be purchased separately or altogether as a pack and from my experience, it took me about 3 hours to complete a chapter, apart from chapter four which, in my mind was the trickiest. Which leads me to the one flaw I found with this game. Once again, alot of the puzzles will make sense when you sit down and really think about it but some of them are simply bizarre and unless you’re somewhat used to the tricks that LucasArts like to use in these games, I can’t see people figuring them out themselves. That said, it did feel slightly easier than the earlier games but I still would expect a newcomer to be searching for a walkthrough by chapter two.

Finishing up here, I still think the Monkey Island series are a solid gaming experience that everyone should try at least once. I know the humour might not appeal to everyone but for the life of me I can’t think who. Best thing about this game is you can buy the first chapter on it’s own if you want to try it. And I’d recommend you all do that.
