PC gamers are being asked to donate their unused computational power to help researchers better understand the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
Folding@home is a distributed computing project for disease research which uses idle resources to simulate protein folding.
By downloading Folding@home, PC gamers can help researchers develop treatments for COVID-19, which has so far killed over 8,000 people and caused global disruption.
"The data you help us generate will be quickly and openly disseminated as part of an open science collaboration of multiple laboratories around the world, giving researchers new tools that may unlock new opportunities for developing lifesaving drugs," said Folding@home director Greg Bowman in a post detailing the project.
Early projects are geared around understanding how the virus interacts with human host cells, and developing new antibodies to disrupt it.

    • After cracking the PlayStation Vita wide open, and providing a litany of useful homebrew tools, it appears that TheFlow is looking to move onwards and upwards to the next Sony system: the PlayStation 4. As those in the PS4 scene are likely aware, there is a current webkit exploit for consoles on firmware 6.20, thanks to SpecterDev. According to a post made by TheFlow on Twitter, it appears that he has an exploit in the works for OFW 6.20 as well. Those interested in homebrew are being told to stay on that system version, with a vague comment of, "Also don't update past FW 6.20 if you want a kxploit". What makes this tease even more notable though, is the fact that it isn't just a webkit exploit--the term "kxploit" was specifically mentioned. While a webkit exploit is useful, a kernel exploit would allow modders to do more with a theoretical softmod, and would be the first possible kexploit available since OFW 5.05/5.07. There is very limited information as of just yet, but with a track record like TheFlow's, it'd be wise to stay on 6.20 if you're on it. As of December 2019, the latest PlayStation 4 system software version is 7.02.

Also don‘t update past FW 6.20 if you want a kxploit
      — Andy Nguyen (@theflow0) March 11, 2020
UPDATE: Well, it appears he didn't actually have a vulnerability in mind when he made his first Tweet above, but after receiving a PlayStation 4 from a fellow hacker, TheFlow has confirmed he indeed does have a vulnerability for OFW 6.20.

    2. Xbox News

The official specs for Xbox Series X have been revealed, expanding on much of the info Microsoft has announced in the past few months.
GamesIndustry.biz sister site Digital Foundry was invited to the company's Redmond headquarters for an in-depth look at the machine, and has shared a full breakdown of the hardware under the hood of the upcoming console.
The Series X is powered by eight Zen 2 cores at 3.8GHz, a significant improvement on the 2.13GHz achieved by the Xbox One X's eight custom Jaguar cores. As previously announced, its GPU offers 12 teraflops of power -- double the amount of the One X, and considerably more than the 1.4 teraflops in the Xbox One S.
Speaking to Digital Foundry, Microsoft technical fellow Andrew Goossen said this has been a key goal for the platform holder.
"We wanted a minimum doubling of performance over Xbox One X to support our 4K60 and 120 targets," he said. "And we wanted that doubling to apply uniformly to all games."
The console has 16GB of GDDR6 memory, up from the 12GB GDDR5 found in the One X or the 8GB DD3 found in the One S.
Internal storage will be handled by a 1TB SSD, plus a 1TB Expansion Card, and support for external storage via USB 3.2 HDDs.
The article also contains more detail on the recently announced Quick Resume feature, which allows players to switch between multiple suspended games. According to Digital Foundry, the Series X's processor is capable of running four Xbox One S game sessions simultaneously on a single chip.
Quick Resume will support a minimum of three Series X games, although more details will be announced at a later date.

PS4 exclusive Nioh 2 was the best-selling physical game at UK retail last week.
The Team Ninja game didn't need to sell a lot of copies to reach No.1 in what is a very quiet time for the physical games market. The title's boxed sales are actually 63% lower than the original (digital data is not included), which reached No.2 back in February 2017.
The action RPG just about held off competition from a resurgent Mario Kart 8: Deluxe, which speeds up the charts as more Switch stock makes it to retail. The kart racer jumped 108% in sales week-on-week.
As a result of this success, last week's No.1 Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX slips to No.3 with a 53% drop in sales week-on-week.

Hitman is one of the most popular stealth action video game series of all time. It is known best for its heavy emphasis on executing the perfect hit and sandbox approach to stealth gameplay.

In all of the Hitman instalments, players have a choice from a variety of weapons, items and tools in order to get as close to their intended target without being noticed. You have the ability to disguise your character in a large selection of outfits, ranging from classic suits to chicken costumes, in order to avoid being detected by your enemies. The franchise has been in existence for over 20 years and still managed, for the most part, to retain it original style. This is down to the fact that the franchise is still overseen by the original developers who have remained as loyal to their fan base as they have to the game. It has even transcended the stealth game industry in the form of two motion pictures and a Hitman based slot machine featured on the best online casino in the UK.

    How Did it All Begin?

The first Hitman release came way back in 2000 in the form of Hitman: Codename 47. It was the brainchild of two Danish video game developers who joined forces in 1998 to form IO Interactive. It was a PC exclusive title and was quickly recognised as on of the most unique stealth action games in the gaming industry.

    The Best of Both Worlds

In Hitman: Codename 47, the main character transformed from a simple hired gun into a professional killer clone, dressed in a fitted black suit and blood red tie, with a signature bar code on the back of his head. Agent 47 was the result of a cloning experimentation who, after escaping the cloning facility with the help of his creator, is issued with and executed hits on those who were behind his original commission. With each subsequent release, the complexity of the overall storyline deepens, allowing for an emotional connection to grow between the player and Agent 47. The character development is on par with a Hollywood blockbuster; we get to realise, first-hand, the motivations behind the characters actions, as well as his creator, who issues him with his hits.

When it comes to gameplay, the Hitman franchise is arguably one of the most ambitious projects in video game history. With seven releases and two mobile games, the Hitman series has maintained the perfect balance between creating new and exiting titles and sticking to what it does best. The gameplay is clearly the developers primary focus and they definitely do not fail in that regard. The stealth mechanics approve in tandem with the introduction of more complex objectives. There is a steady introduction of more detailed locations, new weapons, remastered missions, and refined movement controls that cater for a re-playability that is rivaled by few. Overall, the Hitman games allow for one of the most cohesive and connected experiences in the gaming industry.

    The Big Screen

So popular was the video game series that a film adaptation of the game was released in 2007, in the form of the film Hitman. This was followed up by the 2015 film Hitman: Agent 47. While the motion pictures were met with mixed review, with some critics and fans believing the films to be cliché and generic, the fact that the movies exist is testament to the popularity of the character.

    The Big Hit

One departure from the game that definable did not disappoint fans came in the form of the 2008 Hitman slot machine. The 5 reel, 15 payline slot machine is based on the video game and film series, and does not fail to match the high octane nature of the original franchise. The slots beautifully pay homage to the paraphernalia of the video game series, featuring the main character in his trademark suit, the instantly recognisable insignia, as well as spinners with syringe, silver pistol and a sniper rifle symbols on full show. This slot machine is a must for all Hitman fans looking to test their nerves alongside Agent 47 himself!

    2. PS2 News

This week saw the 20th anniversary of the launch of the PlayStation 2 in Japan -- the beginning of a remarkable era for console gaming.
The PS2 ultimately sold 155 million units worldwide, a record-breaking total that seems unlikely to be rivalled by any other console platform in the near future. Less commonly cited but even more extraordinary in many ways are the software numbers for the platform. Around 1.5 billion units of PS2 software were sold over the years, and though various estimates float around for the number of software titles released on PS2 -- complicated, I suspect, by different ways of counting SKUs and games with different names in various territories -- Wikipedia currently curates a list of almost 4,500 entries.
The 20th anniversary of the PS2 mostly serves to make those of us who were working in the games business at the time feel very old, of course, but it also serves as an opportunity to reflect on how things have changed since the March of 2000. It was an era when consoles ruled the roost; smartphones weren't even a twinkle in Steve Jobs' eye at that point, and the PC platform was going through one of the doom-and-gloom points in its cycle, as retailers reduced shelf space for PC games and digital distribution -- awaiting the arrival of Steam some years later -- remained an unfulfilled dream.
The PS2 launch and how the console and its market developed remain important things to study from a business perspective
Things were simpler in many regards. Video games were all but synonymous with consoles at that point, and there was one business model to rule them all -- packaged games at a largely consistent price point. It's easy to be nostalgic for that simplicity, though it certainly had its downsides; not least the high barriers to entry that effectively prevented anything like today's thriving indie development sector from taking root.
It was also an era when territorial barriers were much higher in the industry. Japan, North America and Europe all had distinct line-ups of software, and even the launch date for the PS2 hardware itself was staggered across territories to an extent that would attract consumer outrage today -- the anniversary of the European launch, as a consequence, isn't for another nine months.
Rather than simply feeling nostalgic (or old), though, I think that the PS2 launch and how the console and its market developed remain important things to study from a business perspective. The world may have been different then, but the core of what it takes to launch a console and convince consumers to invest in it hasn't changed all that much -- and the PS2 remains the single most successful example of that in the industry's history. Moreover, for all that the market may be more complex and diversified today than it was 20 years ago, there are also some notable parallels between the PS2 and its rivals and the situation faced by the upcoming console launches.

The Avengers universe is in need of some damage control, and a new trailer for Marvel Studios’ upcoming VR experience reveals how you can be a part of the solution.
Avengers: Damage Control, a VR story from the minds at Marvel and ILMxLAB, is coming to select The Void VR locations in the U.S. and Canada, and the preview footage unveils aspects of the hero mission.

The concept revolves around Wakanda’s brightest mind Shuri (Letitia Wright) recruiting your team to test out her prototype Emergency Response Suits, a combination of Wakanda and Stark technology. Good thing, too, because an enemy from the past — the trailer reveals that to be Ultron — is out to steal the tech, which means you’ll have to team up with Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), the Wasp (Evangeline Lily), and other Avengers to stop the attack.

Although Spider-Man, in Tom Holland, appears in the trailer, only the previously mentioned actors are confirmed.

Marvel has announced a brand new open-world RPG called Future Revolution for mobile devices, and it looks like Captain America, Spider-Man, Captain Marvel, and Doctor Strange are taking centre stage. The reveal trailer shows the four characters going into battle with an army of creatures while reality folds in on itself. The footage is from the game engine but it may not play like what we see on the screen. Alongside the four heroes are other characters that will be joining the fight. Those characters are Captain America, Spider-Man, Captain Marvel and Doctor Strange. No, that is not a typo. It appears Future Revolution is embracing the multiverse as different variants of the characters come into battle.
