GameStop has been talking about its plans to stream games since acquiring Spawn Labs and Impulse back in early 2011, and next summer the new service will launch. But it won't be available on consoles as originally thought.

"Based on consumer feedback, our success in selling mobile devices, and the imminent launch of new consoles, we have decided to move our technology to a PC-based model," GameStop president Tony Bartel said during a conference call with investors today (via Gamasutra). After running a nationwide private beta, GameStop has decided to offer the service only on PC, tablets and internet-enabled television sets.

Previously, GameStop senior VP Mike Mauler proposed a scenario where users would need to own a retail copy of a particular game they wished to stream from the cloud. That's not set in stone, of course – and that's not to say GameStop won't bring the service to the next generation of consoles, but for the near-future, it appears consoles aren't getting an invite to GameStop's cloud club.

It's time to get realistic about the prospects of a PlayStation Vita price drop. Sony Worldwide Studios' head Shuhei Yoshida dampened the fires of speculation at GamesCom this week by telling Eurogamerthat it was simply "too early" to slash the price on the gaming handheld -- it was only just launched this year for every active region beyond Japan, after all. That's not to say Sony is determined to keep the PS Vita at $249 forever. Much like what it did for the PS3, the company is working to bring down the price by streamlining part costs. The cuts might be necessary given the mismatch between the warm reception to the quad-core, OLED-packing hardware and the actual sales; Sony would "like to see more uptake" than what's been seen to date, according to Yoshida. In the meantime, we'll have to be content with bundles like the European LittleBigPlanet combo if we want to eke out a little more value at the game store counter.

At Google's developer conference, the company announced that it would soon offer the ability to download delta updates in its Play Store, and we're starting to see the promise fulfilled before our very eyes. These delta upgrades, which save time and bandwidth when updating larger apps by only downloading the actual changes (rather than the entire program), were spotted earlier by Android Policeand verified by our staff. While it may seem like a minor feature, you'll likely be happy that you don't have to think twice about updating your graphically-intense games when you're not within range of a hotspot. Head below for a video showing the delta updates in action.

The retail chain is looking to make DLC purchasers easier for consumers

    GameStop

    gamestop.com

Gamestop is ready to launch a new system that allows consumers to purchase and download downloadable content (DLC) for Xbox 360 titles in store. Currently, when a user buys DLC, they received a code that can be redeemed on their home consoles. GameStop president Tony Bartel told Wired that the new system would bypass that step.
"There was a lot of friction about putting in a [25-digit] code… with a controller," Bartel told Wired.
The system will send an email after users purchase the content in store. By using their smartphone and clicking on that link, users can begin the download process on their consoles. The new system is GameStop-exclusive and while it only works with Xbox 360 content, Bartel sees it moving to other platforms in the future.
"It's GameStop-specific, and it works with any code," he says of the system. "We can take any of our partners and put them on our platform."

    2. Nintendo 3DS News

Nintendo’s unrelenting critics would have you believe its mascot’s latest handheld outing is ‘Mario by the numbers’. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
The moment 3DS owners start up the single-player mode of New Super Mario Bros 2, they will fall into one of two camps: the stalwart gaming veterans that are unable to resist the challenge of new, intricate and devious side-scrolling levels, or the newcomers taking their first steps onto discovering why many of us spent our childhood surgically attached to our NES and SNES controllers.
There is very little that will shock and surprise anyone that has played a 2D Mario platformer – let alone those that have encountered the NSMB series before – but few will be able to put this title down within the first hour. Time flies past in a blur of smashed blocks, flattened goombas and incinerated piranha plants before you remember your supposed to be indignant that Nintendo has dared to charge you £40 for something you’ve essentially played before.
This is partly once again thanks to the level design. While some may feel that Super Mario 3D Land’s levels felt a little sparse and empty, each one dependent on a single gimmick to coax you towards that all important flagpole, New Super Mario Bros 2’s stages are further proof of Nintendo’s prowess at 2D level design.
Each is packed with secrets: extra lives, the ever-enticing power ups and entire areas that you would never find without straying from the usual left-to-right path. Nothing emphasises this more than the return of the P-wing symbol from NES classic Super Mario Bros 3 – you’ve never found everything a stage has to offer until you’ve flown over it.
But that’s not Nintendo’s priority when it comes to marketing the 3DS blockbuster. The platform holder is instead focusing on the new Coin Rush mode, something that some might think of as a half-arsed attempt at a bonus mode. They would be wrong.
Three randomly selected stages, more coins, 100 seconds on the clock and one life.
On the face of it, Coin Rush comes across as a transparent ploy to eek out a few more gameplay hours by recycling levels wholesale. But instead, it taps into a compulsion that all Mario players have battled since the 1986 original.
We’ve all done it, diverted from our goal to get those five coins just sitting there in the open – fully aware that they accomplish nothing but edge us closer to that next extra life, of which we already have 50.
Throw in a ticking time limit, and those coins become even more tantalising. Do we risk going after them, or press onto the next inevitable batch of plunder? When we get the Coin Block Hat, which spews shiny things the faster we run, do we dash full pelt towards the level’s end, or hang around for those secret stashes?
These questions are not answered with careful strategy but reckless button mashing as you attempt to find that ideal route to bag the most coins before time runs out. The blocks and chasms of each level blur to form racing lines you try to perfect each time, with every death accompanied by the uncontrollable urge to have one more go, one more go, just one more...
And the ability to challenge friends and strangers via StreetPass, where you download the same random assortment of levels they faced, brings out the competitive nature that keeps a cartridge firmly in its slot for months.
New Super Mario Bros 2 arrives on shelves tomorrow, and while many – including your favourite trade site – have questioned its oddly high digital price point of £39.99, there’s no denying the game’s potential to rake it in for Nintendo.
New Super Mario Bros 2 is released in the UK tomorrow. It will, for the first time, be released both at retail and via Nintendo’s digital eShop simultaneously.

Sony used its Gamescom press conference to effectively relaunch its Vita handheld for Christmas.
And as part of the revamp, it will spend more money on marketing Vita this Q4 than it did over the platform’s launch earlier this year.
To improve the console’s slow sales the platform holder will launch a series of bundles featuring the biggest brands in games: Call of Duty, Assassin’s Creed, FIFA, LittleBigPlanet and Need for Speed.

“We’re currently putting the finishing touches to our campaign, and throughout peak we’ll be spending more marketing money than we did during the launch period,” SCE?UK’s senior product manager Ian Vinten explained to MCV.
“Our comprehensive TV plan kicks off in September and will run in key bursts to Christmas, focusing on the new titles. Our first ad will feature FIFA 13 and LittleBigPlanet.
“Having FIFA 13 in our creative is a great example of how we’re engaging with the third-party titles. These games really deliver against the promise of the hardware and are what our consumers have been crying out for.”
Sony called on its own studios to satisfy demands for more Vita content too, unveiling two key titles in Germany:?a new Killzone and new IP from LittleBigPlanet developer Media Molecule called Tearaway.
“History has shown that great quality content drives demand for hardware,” added VP and MD for SCE UK & Ireland Fergal Gara.
“We hope you’ll agree that the outstanding array of software showcased at Gamescom, covering some of the biggest and best franchises, demonstrates our commitment to the platform.
“This strength and depth of software support, in combination with a heavyweight marketing campaign, retail focused bundles and sampling, puts the PS Vita in a very strong position for Christmas and beyond.”

NaturalMotion has revealed that its free-to-play iOS game CSR Racing grossed in excess of $12m in its first month.
Developed by UK studio Boss Alien, the game sees players competing in a succession of drag races. No steering is required – instead, success is determined by the player’s gear changing accuracy.
As well as skill, progress is best made by upgrading your cars – which can of course be purchased. The game also limits the number of races a player can partake in during any given period. Further goes can be purchased for those unwilling to wait.
The game launched on June 28th.
NaturalMotion’s previous iOS titles include Backbreaker Football and Jenga. It is also the creator of the Euphoria engine which, amongst other games, is the heart of titles such as Grand Theft Auto IV and Red Dead Redemption.
