The BBC has called internet-connected televisions too complex, citing overly complicated apps as the main reason iPad traffic far surpasses that from televisions.
Speaking at the Digital Television Group summit, the Beeb's iPlayer chief Daniel Danker said that iPlayer traffic coming from Apple's iPad was four times that of so-called connected TVs.
"Even after connecting connected TVs, audiences are presented with a list of choices that boggles the mind," Danker told DTG Summit attendees.
Danker also took aim at 'firmware upgrades' just to get televisions working with the service, slamming the current practice as more PC-like than TV-like.
There are twice as many iPlayer enabled televisions on the market as iPads, despite the traffic figures, Danker revealed. All this is evidence that manufacturers need to get their house in order and fix up the software experience he said.

RAM prices are set to increase following the high profile bankruptcy of Japanese DRAM manufacturer Elpida, the largest since the failure of Japanese Airlines in 2010.
Like many other Japanese manufacturers, Elpida faced a string of challenges including the high Japanese currency, natural disasters, falling demand for PC products and increased competition from rivals such as Korean memory maker Hynix.
At least some of Elpida's manufacturing facilities are expected to continue on in some form, possibly through rival acquisitions but supply chain analysts IHS iSuppli warned that even a modest reduction in Elpida's output would see DRAM prices increase.
"The ultimate fate of Elpida’s manufacturing assets, which remains to be decided, will be the major factor impacting pricing and revenue growth in 2012," said iSuppli analyst Mike Howard.
"One thing is certain: Elpida’s bankruptcy means the remaining DRAM players can look forward to a much rosier 2012 than they did just one week ago."
iSuppli was already forecasting a rise in DRAM prices up from lows of just over a US dollar per gigabit of raw DRAM chips to over $1.10 in Q4 2012. Reduced capacity due to Elpida's Bankruptcy raises that figure to $1.20, a 20 per cent increase over prices today.

Rumours have emerged that game developer Valve may be entering the console space with a device akin to a small but high-spec PC that will be able to run its game streaming service Steam.
One theory is that the firm will announce a potential 'Steam Box' at this year's Game Developer's Conference, on now in San Francisco, or perhaps at E3.

The rumours have been given some weight by Valve product designer Greg Coomer, who last November posted a picture of this small form factor PC on Twitter, saying: "Built this tiny PC. i7 quad core, 8GB ram, Zotac Z-68 mobo w/ onnboard Nvidia mobile gfx. Runs Portal 2 FAST."

Apple announced the 25th billion download from the iTunes App Store with a lady in China receiving $10,000 of credit on iTunes for the download of app "Where's my Water?".
Fu Chunli from Qingdao in China picked up the prize for downloading the free version of Disney's hit puzzle game featuring Swampy the alligator.
"When we launched the App Store less than four years ago, we never imagined that mobile apps would become the phenomenon they have, or that developers would create such an incredible selection of apps for iOS users," said Apple veep Eddy Cue.
Apple took the opportunity to point out that the App Store now has over 550,000 apps to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users. The company said over US$4 billion has been paid to app developers.

Social juggernaut Facebook has officially launched an instant messaging app called Messenger for Windows aimed at letting Facebook users "chat while you do other stuff."
Facebook has long had messaging built-in to the web service itself and had previously released the Messenger app installer without much in the way of an official announcement but now it seems Messenger is going mainstream.
"Millions of people log into Facebook every day to keep up with friends. They also browse other websites and run computer programs, so it’s easy to miss important stuff," said Facebook engineer Jack O'Connor in a blog post.
"You should be able to stay in touch anytime, no matter what you’re doing. So today we’re introducing Messenger, a new app that brings Facebook to your desktop," O'Connor added.
In addition to the usual instant messaging tasks, the new Windows client will also display notifications about new comments and photo tags etc as well as displaying an activity stream of friends.
Facebook said they were working on Mac version. The app can be downloaded from this web page.

Rumours grow alongside speculation that Apple will debut a next-gen Siri alongside its new Apple TV offering.
According to TechCrunch, Google is currently ramping up the voice-recognition tech that it's had for a long time to compete with Apple's much-hyped voice feature.
It reckons Assistant will 'go beyond Siri in many ways, most importantly in that the search company will retain complete control of all the layers involved.'
That means integrating the data in the back-end to return more accurate search results and help users accomplish real-life goals. It will also be made available to developers, unlike Siri, which raises the prospect of voice recognition being rolled into third party apps.
Of course, this is precisely what Nuance is trying to do with its own developer programme Nuance DEV, which has 8,000 codeshops signed up.
And to make the story even more messy, Nuance provides the tech for Siri, while its founder Mike Cohen now works for Google.

Creamy citrus treat expected to come after 'Jelly Bean'.
The Android OS dessert codename game continues and 'Key Lime Pie' is has been named as the firm's letter 'K' by the Verge, citing a 'reliable source'.
Key Lime Pie follows the likes of Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich and the rumoured 'Jelly Bean', which has been unofficially named as the ICS successor.
Jelly Bean is expected to receive a release before summer 2012, just nine months after ICS, which means KLP probably shouldn't be expected until sometime in 2013.

Opera may have to rethink its tagline.
Browser firm Opera is always eager to plug its Opera Mini as 'the world’s most popular mobile browser' with every one of its press releases, however, Android's embedded browser has now taken the coveted crown from the Norwegian firm, according to StatCounter.
The research showed that Android's 'robot' browser passed use of Opera's mobile browser for the first time ever in February 2012, out of a 12-month period.
This means that Android has climbed from fourth place in February 2011 when it was behind iPhone and Nokia.
While Opera now sits at second place, iPhone and Nokia sit at third and fourth respectively, as BlackBerry rounds off the top five.
Opera has continued to push its mobile offerings over the past few months and will surely be looking to wrestle the number one spot back, though with Android the most dominant mobile OS on the market, it may have a hard task on its hands.

Cross Assault, Capcom's online reality show about a Street Fighter X Tekken tournament, should have been a straightforward promotional device - a dog whistle inaudible to all but fighting game fanatics. But Capcom's PR wheeze backfired spectacularly this week. Cross Assault won't be remembered for whoever wins the $25,000 prize money tonight or the game it was trying to sell. Instead it will forever be associated with sexual harassment and gaming culture at its worst.Miranda Pakozdi and Aris Bakhtanians.

In case you missed it Giant Bomb's coveragehas all the detail but here's a summary. Aris Bakhtanians, the coach of Team Tekken, made numerous and persistent sexist remarks to Miranda Pakozdi, the sole female member of his team. Lewd, sleazy comments about her breast size and thighs plus requests for her to take her t-shirt off and chat about how he wants to smell her. Pakozdi's contract obliged her to stay in the competition so she had little choice but to endure it. Eventually, to escape this unpleasant situation, she stopped trying to win matches and got herself knocked out of the competition. When Bakhtanians was challenged about his behaviour he showed no remorse. "This is a community that's, you know, 15 or 20 years old, and the sexual harassment is part of a culture, and if you remove that from the fighting game community, it's not the fighting game community," he explained as if it was Pakozdi's fault he was a jerk.Quite rightly his comments sparked a firestorm. Capcom distanced itself from Bakhtanians and "addressed" the issue by reminding those taking part to behave better. The games media coverage outraged many. Some because they felt his behaviour was unacceptable, others because they believed that daring to challenge Bakhtanians' lack of decency was some politically correct conspiracy to censor them. So, before we move on, let's get one thing straight: Bakhtanians' behaviour was vile. This is not about political correctness - it's about rudeness. He showed a complete lack of empathy for his teammate. Context matters. If friends want to talk to each other that way then fine, but this went way past a few trash talk jibes. But his idiotic comments did shine a light on the darker side of gaming culture, a side reflected in the abuse directed at those who criticised him and the journalists who reported on the matter. It's a side of gaming that too often we pretend isn't there, but the truth is there's an undercurrent of sexism, racism, homophobia and other forms of bigotry in some parts of the gaming world. It's not anything more than in real life of course, but the problem with gaming is that such behaviour is rarely challenged.Of course few people want to mix politics with their fun but sadly I don't think those of us who feel such behaviour is repulsive can continue to turn a blind eye to it. I've done it. I've found myself playing online with homophobic assholes and simply muted them. It's the easy option, silencing them without any awkward confrontation. It's the gaming equivalent of sticking fingers in my ears and shouting 'I can't hear you' over and over again. I also know I'm not the only one. Some people mute these players, others retreat to the safe warm cocoon of private matches, and many give up on online gaming altogether.
"When unchallenged these attitudes fester like cancer. When those who object don't act, those who behave this way are validated and encouraged to continue acting like pricks."

But when unchallenged these attitudes fester like cancer. When those who object don't act, those who behave this way are validated and encouraged to continue acting like pricks. In short, I and others who feel the same about this but do nothing have been ceding ground to these people and that is a big problem. You only need to look at racism in football to see where this could lead. If the industry and - above all - the players don't tackle this, it should surprise no one if gaming's image becomes tarred with bigotry in a few years' time.I don't want that. The industry certainly wouldn't want that and - I suspect - those of you reading this wouldn't want that either. Hell, I don't even think Bakhtanians would want that.So here's what the Cross Assault incident means for me: the next time I play online and encounter some bad-mouthed bigot, I will take him or her to task and I hope - no, I want - others will do the same. How you challenge it doesn't matter. Maybe you'll train your firepower on them in the game, maybe you'll stop playing and start arguing, or maybe you'll rate down their reputation on Xbox Live. It doesn't matter how they react either. What matters is that you did it and in doing so reclaimed a piece of gaming for those who aren't rude arseholes. I doubt it'll be an enjoyable experience but I'm sick of seeing an entertainment medium I love being dragged down into the gutter by the behaviour of this tiny but vocal group of players. It's not that I want to see Bakhtanians and others like him pushed out

Rumors began swirling earlier this week that Doom 4 had been canceled. Accompanying said rumors was a batch of supposed screenshots or artwork, one of which you can see above. In addition to refuting the cancellation rumors, id has now responded to the images as well.

While not directly denying their relationship to Doom 4, id's Matt Hooper, design director of Rage, tweeted that the images "have nothing to do with what you're gonna see in Doom 4." Hooper added, "When we officially show things you'll see awesome." Responding to another tweet, Hooper noted that when the official reveal is made, "fans will be happy." For what it's worth, the leaked images show what appears to be a ravaged planet Earth, perhaps giving a nod to Doom 2: Hell on Earth.
