As overall digital gameplay rises by 241 per cent since 2008.
Market researcher Parks Associates says 135 million people play digital games across mobile, free-to-play (F2P) and social platforms for at least one hour per month, which is up from 56 million in 2008.
17 per cent of gamers have downloaded a game to their smartphones, rising from seven per cent in 2008. Additionally, around 80 per cent play F2P games on the PC or via Facebook on games such as Farmville, according to the report.
In November, we reported that iOS and Android are generating more revenue than Nintendo and Sony's portable games combined, and Parks says that mobile and online are changing the industry.
Pietro Macchiarella, Parks Associates research analyst and study author, said: "Instead of ending support of customers after they buy individual game titles, game companies now focus on building gamer communities and developing ongoing relationships with their customers.
"The positive effect of this approach is that game monetisation can be extended beyond the point of sale. Unlike traditional offline games, the online world allows the industry to earn revenue even when people play the same game repeatedly."

Alex Garden, Xbox Live's general manager, has issued a lengthy statement regarding the ongoing battle against Xbox Live hackers and online fraud, offering users security tips in the process.
The statement comes amidst growing concerns surrounding a still unexplained surge in Xbox Live account theft in recent months."I can assure you we are listening and continue to take aggressive steps to help protect you against ever-changing threats," says Garden.
"Security is an ongoing battle. No matter how well we work to improve security - and we are working every day to bring new forms of protection to Xbox LIVE - our work will never end. With every measure we put in place, ill-intentioned people will create new ways to attack online services."
It was reported last month that insufficient security measures on the official Xbox.com website may be to blame for the growing number of Xbox Live account thefts.
While Garden notes that last year "there was a surge of personal information being compromised and sold," he maintains the same response MS has had to previous questioning: "We here at Xbox have no evidence of a security breach in the Xbox LIVE service".
His advice is the usual stuff - difference and strong passwords for each online service and the like.
Here's the full statement from Garden:
Your Security is Important to Me
Since today is Safer Internet Day, I thought it'd be a good opportunity to share a few things that have been on my mind these last several months. Here at Microsoft we view this day through many lenses from online safety to privacy to account and data security and more, and we take your security and online safety very seriously.
As all of us know, account hijacking across the Internet continues to grow. It's a thriving - albeit illegal - industry affecting online services the globe over. Last year, there was a surge of personal information being compromised and sold, and this undoubtedly has had an impact on all of us. While we here at Xbox have no evidence of a security breach in the Xbox LIVE service, that is of little comfort to our members whose accounts have been compromised by malicious and illegal attacks.
It's in this vein I'm reminded how important it is to listen to you, our members - to really listen, to really hear and to really do something with what you say. I can assure you we are listening and continue to take aggressive steps to help protect you against ever-changing threats. We also care deeply about how this ongoing issue affects your experience with Xbox LIVE and your trust in us.
Security is an ongoing battle. No matter how well we work to improve security - and we are working every day to bring new forms of protection to Xbox LIVE - our work will never end. With every measure we put in place, ill-intentioned people will create new ways to attack online services.
That's why I believe it's more important than ever that our members are armed with information and security tools to actively partner with us in this war on fraud. We have a dedicated web page at http://xbox.com/security detailing all the steps you can take today to help protect your account.
What you'll see here is the most common sources of attack continue to involve:
    social engineering to gather information about the user to guess the password;
    phishing, whereby the user types the account password into an illegitimate website that is pretending to be something else;
malicious software on the computer that has captured the password; or
using the same password from another online service that has been breached.
I share these realities in hope that our members will work with us to reduce the ease of access for hackers. Personal account security starts with setting strong passwords and routinely changing them, using a valid email and a unique password for each online service, adding a phone number, alternate email address, and a unique and private security question via the Windows LIVE ID Account Management site, and reducing the amount of personal information shared online or through social networks. More and more, being mindful of where you login to online services, even when not using Xbox LIVE, and using single-use codes, provides added protection, especially when you're signing in from a PC that isn't your own. Working together we can prevail over the criminals.
I realize it may fall flat when we don't share specific details of our security architecture. However, some of the security measures we have in place to help protect our members include password-attempt throttling, CAPTCHA (an industry-standard anti-scripting measure designed so that an actual human needs to answer the challenge), strong proofs (trusted PC, pin sent to cell phone, secondary e-mail and security questions), and account lockout for multiple failed attempts and compromised accounts, which we investigate and recover to the rightful owner.
Getting ahead of potential threats of harm is an important area of focus. At a broader level, Microsoft continues to investigate cyber-criminals and bot ...

Playstation Whata? Through February 12, GameStop has Nintendo 3DS systems, including the Pearl Pink version launching on the 10th, on sale for $149.99, a $20 discount. We're sure the timing of this sale is perfectly innocuous -- it's just a coincidence that a competitor's handheld gaming system will be in stores two days after this sale is over.

Alternately, you could think of that $20 as a subsidy for the Circle Pad Pro (also out this week, only at GameStop) allowing you to pick up two analog pads for the price of one.

Alienware's latest PC is an attempt to fire a salvo right across the bows of Sony and Microsoft's gaming flagships. It looks like the (slightly overweight) lovechild of the pair; like an alternate universe console. The X51 borrows liberally from the design schools of both the Xbox (matte sides) and the PlayStation 3 (slot-loading optical drive, front panel gloss). The Alienware logo rotates to suit both vertical and horizontal setups. The device is around the size of the original PS3, but it looked pretty petite in comparison to There's a litany of holes on the back of the X51, including plenty of USB ports and audio options. Reacquaint yourself with some technical specifics after the break, alongside our hands-on impressions with Super Street Fighter IV.

The latest update for Sony's PlayStation 3 is live and available for download from via your PlayStation Netw...oops, Sony Entertainment Network account. While we get used to the new branding (nothing we could see in the system UI has actually changed at all), there's a few tweaks included in v4.10, like some sorely needed upgrades for the web browser and the ability to set the time and date automatically upon each sign-in. A scan of the forums reveals a few who noticed problems with Netflix post-update (which may or may not be update related, deleting Netflix data from the Game Data utility section and/or installing the newest version seems to fix the issue), however most are just seeing significantly better scores in browser benchmarks like Acid3 and HTML5 Test, better compatibility with most webpages and improved YouTube playback (still 240p). Let us know if you notice any other changes, the system should prompt you the next time you log on for a quick round of Final Fantasy XIII-2.

You may remember that during the TouchPad fire sale, a few slates slipped out with a rather primitive Froyo build on them. Well, HP doesn't seem to know how the tablets hit shelves with Android on board, but its decided to release the source code for the OS nonetheless. Devs had previously called on the company to hand over the code, but the request was refused since HP had never intended for TouchPads to ship with Android, and thus were not obligated to abide by the open-source requirements. As a gesture of goodwill to the community (and under a certain amount of pressure from it) the former purveyor of all things webOS has reversed course though, and let the TouchPad-specific kernel loose on the internet for others to repurpose as they see fit. Hit up the source link to download it now.

Gaikai has launched an instant trial of 2K Games' upcoming title The Darkness II - marking a significant step towards CEO Dave Perry's goal of pre-release streamable demos for all major titles.
Gaikai allows gamers to stream demos of prominent PC titles through their web browser even if their PC or Mac would not be capable of running the game locally, doing all the difficult computations in the cloud.
However, the cloud gaming startup had previously only featured games some time after their initial release, activity which showcased the technology nicely and offered some value to retail partners but offered only limited potential for marketing.
This time, the free and instant-streaming demo of The Darkness II is available at embracethedarkness.com, retail sites and Eurogamer.net ahead of its international release on February 10. (It should be noted that GamesIndustry.biz is published by Eurogamer Network Ltd.)
For pre-release demos to work, the game's developer would have to collaborate with Gaikai prior to completing the game, suggesting that Gaikai is starting to convince publishers of the value of adding cloud gaming to their promotional campaigns and receiving support in response.
"Streaming The Darkness II demo through Gaikai gives 2K Games the unique opportunity to engage with their fans and potential customers with amazing content in a way that was impossible until recently," Robert Stevenson, SVP interactive entertainment, told GamesIndustry.biz.
"An instant, hands-on experience is by far the most powerful weapon in a publisher's marketing arsenal. At Gaikai, that's what we deliver."
Gaikai currently has partnerships with a number of publishers and retailers including EA, Capcom, Walmart and and TV manufacturer LG.
"The Darkness II is visually impressive and is driven by a compelling storyline, which brings out the best in Gaikai's cloud gaming service, instantly reaching a global audience of millions of gamers with no special modifications or changes to the game," added CEO David Perry.
Gaikai will hope to add more day-one releases to its portfolio as it continues to establish itself. Its main technological competitor in the cloud gaming space, OnLive, offers its services directly to gamers instead, hoping to build an Xbox Live-style subscription service where players log in to play new and old games.
