With deliveries of the Kindle Paperwhite and seven-inch Kindle Fire HD tablets due to begin in Europe later this month, Amazon's founder and CEO says the new devices will not make a profit.
Instead, their success will lie with how many books and apps are bought.
Talking to the BBC, Bezos said: "We want to make money when people use our devices, not when people buy our devices,"
Bezos said that the strategy worked because users buy far more digital products once they own an Amazon devices.
He elaborated: "What we find is that when people buy a Kindle they read four times as much as they did before they bought the Kindle.
"But they don't stop buying paper books. Kindle owners read four times as much, but they continue to buy both types of books."
