It's the hardware behind the largest homebrew gaming community out there! It's also some of my core audience here at zodttd.com. I've been discussing the new model of the GP2X, the F200, with the GP2X distributors out there. The expected "due date" of the F200 is October 22nd. And since nobody outside of GPH has received them yet, I am unable to get one early for a preview as planned. The day my F200 arrives not only will I have a review, but some software for it as well. As I mentioned earlier I have a history of PocketPC/Palm/PDA experience and am welcoming the addition of the F200. With it's addition of the touchscreen, I am able to put a lot of my software library currently unreleased on this handheld.
And here is the issue at hand. There is a large number of developers I've spoken to who are thinking about skipping the F200. With all the talk of the "Craiginator" many developers for the GP2X have given up developing anything new for the GP2X, new model or not. Why is this? They tend to say it's a matter of having no audience for their work. The Craiginator handheld will be great. It will be better than the F200 infact!
But did you know it will also be delayed due to the release of the F200? Why? Well think about it. Where does Craig get the funding for the Craiginator...from sales of the F200. If the F200 is a failure due to lack of sales, I am leaning towards thinking it will delay the Craiginator further, though thats my speculation.
Why must the GP2X be left behind so early? There's months upon months before we will be seeing new handhelds appear, not to mention the Nokia N900 (more on that later). The community is abandoning the GP2X, and without the community, developers are left without users for their software. Rlyeh was working on TV OUT and Fine Scaling. But it seems to be getting abandoned because if he's not using it, and there's nobody else to use it, why bother?
Breathe some life into the community before it disbands and leaves future handhelds without an audience too. How? Buy the GP2X F200. It has all the usage of the GP2X with the added bonus of a better design/dpad and a touchscreen. So please, PLEASE, support the community and upgrade. If anything, do it to hold yourself over until we can give the Craiginator a chance.
Many of the larger homebrew sites out there and their owners are starting to see the GP2X dying out. Releases have dwindled and news is slow. What are we left with on gp32x forums? A large newsthread about new handhelds. But not the F200. People must understand that without the F200 to keep the community together, it will split and disband. Leaving no room for further handhelds.
Hopefully I have drilled it into heads now how important this is.
