In so doing it has battered Samsung and Motorola, relegating the Galaxy Tab family to 15.4 per cent and the Xoom series to seven per cent.
Amazon has become a serious contender in the tablet space in extraordinarily quick time. It only unveiled its Kindle upgrade last September, and has still to reveal any official numbers.
But the device seems to have attracted consumers, who like its small size, price and the tight integration of Amazon products and services.
In January, analysts reckoned Amazon could have sold 6m in Q4.
