Android corners this unwanted market with 7,000 of them.
The McAfee Threats Report: First Quarter 2012 said financial profit is one of the main motivators for spreading malware and that the Android explosion represented a 1,200 percent increase compared with the 600 Android samples collected by the end of Q4 2011.
The majority of these threats stem from third-party app markets, and are typically not found in the official Android market.
As bad as it sounds, it's possible that the threat was underestimated before as the new mobile explosion was partly due to McAfee Labs’ improved detection.
In general there's been a malware increase across all platforms.
PC malware reached its highest levels in four years, and Mac malware rose too. There were 8m samples in all, with total malware expected to reach 100 million within the year.
