    The classic game Drug Wars was recently ported to the DS by Youngmx. Here are the release notes:

    For my first homebrew project, I decided to do a remake of the ever-present, always-popular DrugWars text rpg. I wanted to make it stand out a little, so I added some city images, which ended up making the entire project rather large. In a future version, I might consider compression and an unpacking lib, but for now, lets hope you have highspeed. This uses the font and sprite routines I wrote in the last sample, and you can also see from the screenshots where I was really intending to use that random splash image on the Font/Sprite Routines demo. Unlike the first demo I put out, this is actually compiled to run properly on the emulator iDeaS. I haven't been able to test this on hardware, but you might want to uncomment the lcdSwap(); line in the arm9.c file to get the screens right on hardware.

    Its a great game so be sure to check it out via the homepage at http://www.youngmx.com/ndsdev/

    The site also informs that under the leftside fan you have the ATI R500 Xenos GPU and under the rightside fan you have the 3 core (update: or 2 core for these beta boards according to teamxbox.com) IBM PowerPC CPU.

    Somthing i have been waiting for for a while, this is a dashboard replacment that can legally replace the ms dash. has all the important functions one wants for his dashboard too. check it out at www.xbox-scene.com

    Opendash Beta Released!, legal open-source xbox dashboard
    >> d0wnlab on the Xbox-Scene forums wrote..
    I had some time today to finish up a beta of my OpenDash. It isn't done, nor is it a very nice dash to use, but it's the first OpenXDK(info)-based dashboard afaik. Many of the limitations are very lame, but it does the job (I suppose).

    WARNING! DO NOT USE AS PRIMARY DASH WITHOUT A METHOD TO RECOVER (.. why would you want to, anyways?)!! This is completely beta software and should not be trusted. Software provided without warranty, etc. Use at your own risk.

    Features:
    * (2!) cool groovy backgrounds
    * Browse three (3!) different directories for XBE's to run
    * FTP support via mini-linux distribution (based on ltools(info))
    * It's legal!
    * DVD booting (although reset-on-eject is busted so, it's not that useful)

    I'm posting this in development because I need a bit of help. Namely:
    * Someone to make a cooler milkshape 3d model (replace model.msd with something better)
    * Someone to replace bg.bmp. The red channel of the image is used in the "red-line" background. I just used a screenshot I had laying around, I'm sure a cooler effect could be used with say, clouds or something.
    * Help with turning off reset-on-eject. I'm executing the command:
    HalWriteSMBusValue(0x20, 0x19, 0, 0x01);
    But it doesn't do anything. Any help?

    Other Limitations
    * You can't boot a relative path from the mounted d:/ at the moment.
    For more info, and how you can help with this great project.. check the XS forums thread

    Give it a try..

    More details on the backwards compatability of the xbox 360 were posted at www.xbox-scene.com today. Apparently ATI has a huge role in the hardware of the upcoming system. According to them backwards compatability will rely on emulation, somthing I dont recall any previouse console doing.

    Xbox 360 Backward Compatibility Details
    >> From TeamXbox.com:
    In an interview with Bit-Tech.Net, Richard Harris of ATI has revealed the very first details on how backward compatibility will work on the Xbox 360. Explaining the role ATI hardware will play in the process, Harris states:

    “They have implemented compatibility purely through emulation (at the CPU level). It looks like emulation profiles for each game are going to be stored on the hard drive, and I imagine that a certain number will ship with the system. They already have the infrastructure to distribute more profiles via Live, and more and more can be made available online periodically.”
    “Emulating the CPU isn’t really a difficult task. They have three 3GHz cores, so emulating one 733MHz chip is pretty easy. The real bottlenecks in the emulation are GPU calls – calls made specifically by games to the nVIDIA hardware in a certain way. General GPU instructions are easy to convert – an instruction to draw a triangle in a certain way will be pretty generic. However, it’s the odd cases, the proprietary routines that will cause hassle.”

    Sdload

    by Published on June 6th, 2005 22:26

    not sure if this was already covered, as it seems to be 6 month old news, and I wasnt exactly here that much during thoes months but..

    I recall a much hyped (on dcemu at least) memory card that had some kind of loader that would allow you to run homebrew code from a memory card... today I thought about this, so I googled it and found this... gcdev.com link. (yah, if this hasnt been covered yet, some one should be shot). anyways... read...

    FROM GCDEV.COM:
    On New Year's Day, January 1st, 2005, I bring to you the first release of my latest GameCube project!

    NO more tolerating PSO for homebrew development!
    NO need to modify your GameCube for fast GC code testing cycles!

    I bring to you SDLOAD! SDLOAD is an SD (Secure Digital) card / Action Replay bootloader. With just an Action Replay (ANY revision works fine) and an SD card adapter for your GameCube, you can be booting code from the SD card or even your PC network within seconds! I estimate it takes around 10 to 15 seconds from the time you turn on your GC to the time you can have homebrew code running on it.

    Once you have installed the loader, all you do is turn on your GameCube, press A to "Start Game", open and close the DVD disk cover, and you are instantly greeted with my SDLOAD DOL selection menu. I have even added a network boot feature so you can use SDLOAD in conjunction with PSOload to instantly boot code from your PC to the GC through the network. As well as this, I have included a nice reload feature so that any GC program can exit back to the SDLOAD menu screen by branching to a location in RAM.

    Download SDLOAD Release V1.00 HERE!!!!

    I hope this will revolutionize GameCube development. This method works on all GameCube consoles, so you can take your SD cards along to friends' houses as well and show your homebrew programs to them. Once you have the files on the SD card, no PC is needed.

    Also, there is NO need for a method to run code on the GC in order to install this loader. ALL you need is an Action Replay, SD card adapter for the GameCube, PC SD card reader, and an SD card.

    The only down-side is that many people do not own SD card adapters for the GameCube yet, but they can be bought for only $30 at Lik-Sang. I include instructions in the readme file for making your own adapter if you want to do so, or feel free to e-mail me at [email protected] (remove the NOSPAM before e-mailing) if you would like me to make and sell you an adapter for cheap. Read the readme.txt and install.txt files for crystal clear details about this project and for information on how to install and use it.
    also, here is a pic.

    When I was away working on the Halo UT mod this law suit popped up. It was important to me because much of my job when I was with Halo UT relied upon ripping halo and halo 2 content to see what made it tick and get ideas on out own content.

    I emailed bungie and had the content manager of halo 2- Frank O'conner give me the OK but i was still pissed about Tecmo. I fail to see why it is illegal to modify content in a game that was purchased by the modifier, or why it would violate IP to publicly distribute these modified files over the internet. In fact, I know people that actually bought DOA just because of the modifications.

    The news might not be what i hoped, but it seems that the people in charge of the ninjahackers website will not be punished, but part of the settlment Tecmo came up with may involve the webmaster giving a database of the users who downloaded the content, I dont blame the webmasters for giving them the database if the settlement required it. US law is a real bitch and they probably had no way of avoiding it. anyways this is a quote from xbox-scene.com

    Tecmo drops lawsuit against NinjaHacker.net
    >> Back in January this year, Tecmo sued the NinjaHacker.net community site because they distributed game modifications (like change the appearance of characters) for Ninja Gaiden, Dead or Alive 3 and Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball.
    Wired.com now informs a confidential settlement has been reached betweem the 2 parties:
    Leaving for another day the question of whether consumers have the right to modify video-game software they've legally purchased, a federal judge last week dismissed a lawsuit by California game maker Tecmo against the proprietors and users of a game-hacking website, after the company quietly settled with the two main defendants.

    Federal Judge Charles Kocoras dismissed the case last Thursday with leave to reinstate it if the settlement is not finalized within 30 days. Glynn confirmed in a telephone interview this week that he'd reached a settlement with Tecmo, but neither he nor his lawyer would elaborate on the details. "I can tell you that my client would not have been inclined to reach any agreement that would have required him to pay money to Tecmo," said attorney Charles Mudd.
    The lawsuit also targeted up to 100 anonymous users of the website, whose identities Tecmo vowed to unmask earlier this year. Those users were the focus of the settlement talks, said Jason Schultz, an attorney with the nonprofit Electronic Frontier Foundation, which had been tracking the case. According to Schultz, Tecmo insisted that Greiling and Glynn hand over NinjaHacker's user database to the company as part of any deal. "Tecmo wanted to get the personal identifying information of people who were uploading and downloading skins," said Schultz. "I don't know if that was in the final settlement."

    Just a thought. Currently the worlds fastest super computer is Blue Gene/L which has the ability to perform 135.5 trillion operations per second. According to ign, the ps3 clocks in at 2.0 teraflops per second (even though most specs sheets say 1.8). Now the over 1000 processors. Mabey some crazy rich person might come up the idea of buying 100 PS3's hacking linux on them and clustering. That would not only top the worlds fastest super computer, but also would probably be much cheaper than the Blue Gene/L.

    good news for legal homebrewers of the xbox! im still hoping and praying for a legal dashboard replacement!

    OpenXDK v0.07
    >> A new version of OpenXDK(info) - the Open Source, Free, Legal (also binaries!) Xbox Development Kit - has been released. From openxdk.org:
    OpenXDK 0.07 has just been released! There are a number of key improvements in this release:
    * The xecuter issue has been resolved. OpenXDK should now execute using this and any other BIOS/dashboards.
    * The USB input layer has been completely reimplemented and now should support 1.0 - 1.6 XBOXs.
    * New library support: freetype (ttf fonts), jpeg, libpng, zlib
    * SDL support: SDL_ttf, SDL_image, SDL_mixer (in progress)
    * Keyboard, mouse, usb, and controller support
    * debugPrint now contains scrolling
    * Multiple video modes (640x480, 720x480, PAL/NTSC)
    * Flicker filter and soften functionality
    * Numerous little bug fixes

    While many people contributed to this release, in particular, I would like single out Carcharius for his work on the controller/usb implementation and for resolving the xecuter problem, and also d0wnlab for his ttf and image work. Thanks very much guys!!

    With this functionality, though, a dashboard is very feasible. I have had various reports of this version of OpenXDK being able to compile wolf3d, quake, tetris, several emulators (NES, sega master), and a handful of other miscellaneous apps.

    Still to come...
    * Networking (yes, I know it has been a long time coming)
    * C++ support

    I saw these earlier today and almost had a heart attack.

    The first one i saw was the duck one. the physics are some of the best i have seen... ever. they drop alot of ducks... and... HOLY CRAP THEY DROP ALOT MORE DUCKS!!

    the MOST stunning i saw was the doc oc one... the renders of his facial features tend to make you wonder if thats just a movie of some guys face or not. as impressive as just him by himself is... they display a whole city with rendering that could give the cg animators of any major motion picture movie a run for their money. I really recomend that you are sitting down when you view this one.

    sony has certainly outdone them selves with both the psp and the upcoming ps3. ...
