    Gin Rummy

    Published by: Sierra Online
    Developed by: Studio Ch’in
    Genre: Card & Board
    Platforms: XBLA (Xbox 360)
    Players: 1 (Offline) 1-4 (Online)
    ESRB: E
    Prices: 400MS pts

I think based on the name, 99% of people would have decided if they where going to buy this game before they were going to read any reviews. Also 99% of XBLA users can guess what this game has: Gin Rummy? Yes, Different game modes but still basically Gin Rummy? Yes. Play on and off line? Yes. Different theme for the cards and stuff? Yes. Supports Live Vision, Yes. Anything else? No.

Most people are going to dismiss this game like they have with so many other casual XBLA games (bar UNO which has sold a ton), which is a shame to a degree because if you have not played Gin Rummy before (like me) its actually not a bad card game. The rules seem complex at first be are pretty simple:

The objective in Gin Rummy is to score more points than your opponent. The basic game strategy is to improve one's hand by forming melds and eliminating deadwood. Two types of meld exist:
    * Sets of 3 or 4 cards sharing the same rank. For example, 8♥-8♣-8♠.
    * Runs of 3 or more cards in sequence, of the same suit. For example, 3♥-4♥-5♥-6♥.

A player's "deadwood" cards are those not in any meld. His deadwood count is the sum of the point values of the deadwood cards— aces are scored at 1 point, face cards at 10, and others according to their numerical values. Intersecting melds are not allowed; therefore, if a player has a 3-card set and a 3-card run sharing a common card, he can only count one of them and must count two cards as deadwood.
    On each turn, a player:
    * draws either the (face-up) top card of the discard pile, or one card from the stock pile
    * may "knock", ending the round, under certain conditions
    * discards one card from his or her hand onto the discard pile

Play continues, in alternating turns, until one player knocks or only 2 cards remain in the stock pile. In that case, the hand would end in a draw.

There are 6 game modes: Classic Gin Rummy, Speed Gin Rummy, Oklahoma Gin, Hollywood Gin, Three-Hand Gin, or Customize Your Own Rules. But really its just the same game and most will just play classic gin rummy or if they want a quick game speed gin rummy, unless they are after the achievements.

It's only a small wait for online 1vs1 games (most of the time) but getting 4 player games very hard, which makes you wonder, why wait 10-15mins to play a 10-15 min game? Oh yeah for the achievement. At time of writing there was only 35,00 on the main leader board (far less in the other board), which explains why 4 player games are hard to get, there is just not enough people playing. Which is a shame as once you get a 4 player (2 vs 2) game going its genuinely feels different from the other game modes and is fun.

Its a simple game and bar the slightly confusing tutorials and slightly dull presentation, is have been made well, and for 400 points its hard to complain too much. In the end, its just about deserves to be on XBLA and because of that and MS new XBLA policy...

Microsoft Corp. doubled sales of the Xbox 360 video game machine last weekend after cutting the price by as much as 29 percent to narrow Nintendo Co.'s lead.

Retailers reported a 100 percent increase in sales for all models compared with the previous weekend, Redmond, Washington- based Microsoft said in an e-mailed statement. Some models sold at six times the previous weekend's rate. The company didn't say how many were sold.

The Sept. 5 price cut gave Microsoft a model that costs less than Nintendo's market-leading Wii for the first time.

LucasArts will be offering Xbox 360 and PS3 demos of the ground-manipulating Fracture next Thursday, 18th September, ahead of the full game's release on 10th October.

The samplers will serve up a tutorial introducing Terrain Formation, the big idea at the core of the third-person action game. This revolves around futuristic weaponry that, at its most basic level, instantly carves craters in, or sprouts hills from, the ground. Dun dun dun.

Unfortunately the tutorial, which we had a fiddle with back in June, spells all of this out rather too clearly, quashing any kind of early improvisation or experimentation. But the exciting potential remains, and not least because up to 12 of you can do all this to each other online.

Publisher affirms rumors that it will dissolve Halo Wars dev upon game's completion; leadership team to form new studio that will "work on other projects with Microsoft Game Studios."

Confirmation has come fast in regard to rumors surfacing earlier today that Microsoft would be closing its internal developer Ensemble Studios upon the completion of sci-fi real-time strategy game Halo Wars. In a statement issued today, Microsoft confirmed that Ensemble will be shut down once the Xbox 360-exclusive RTS set in the best-selling Halo franchise ships out early next year.

"The team at Ensemble has made invaluable contributions to the games industry with their Age of Empires and Age of Mythology games and with the highly anticipated release of Halo Wars. This decision does not reflect at all on Ensemble’s talent or the quality of Halo Wars--in fact, many people who have had a chance to test drive Halo Wars agree that it is on track to being a fantastic game."

Though Microsoft will close the studio, Ensemble brass plan to soldier on. As part of today's statement, Microsoft said that Ensemble's "leadership team" will form a new development house, and has already entered into an agreement with the publisher to continue supporting Halo Wars post-launch, "as well as work on other projects with Microsoft Game Studios."

Commenting on the reason for the closure, Microsoft said, "This was a fiscally rooted decision that keeps MGS on its growth path. While the decision to dissolve Ensemble was not an easy one, Microsoft is working to place as many Ensemble employees who do not move to the newly formed studio into open positions within Microsoft as possible."

As noted earlier today, the Age of Empires brand has sold more than 20 million units since the first installment debuted on the PC in 1997. According to the NPD Group, Ages of Empires III for the PC has sold 1.15 million units in the US alone through July 2008, with The Warchiefs expansion tallying nearly 305,000 more. (The second expansion, Asian Dynasties, was developed by Rise of Nations creators Big Huge Games.)

Ensemble has been a Microsoft-owned studio since 2001.

It was 9 years ago (9/9/99) when the Dreamcast was first launched in the West (specifically the US). And as you might have guess we here are DCEmu owe alot to this little white box, not only for its great commercial games but also for the great homebrew scene it created, (that is still going to this day ) and the many console homebrew scenes it has inspired ever since.

Well what going on in the world of the Dreamcast this year?

Well Ron of Dreamcast.es has been releasing alot of homebrew games and emus recently and I'm sure there is more to come. Our very own Bluecrab is still working away with the Dreamcast builds of yabouse (saturn emu). Also Quzar is alway doing something with his DC (o_O), so I'm sure we will see some stuff from him in the future.

On the 28th we will have a new commercial release for the Dreamcast DUX, which will be the 6th homebrew commercial release for the Dreamcast. And soon after that Wind and Water: Puzzle Battle will be released. So the Dreamcast if far from dead

So, Happy Birthday Dreamcast, we hardly knew ye.

In an interview featured in the latest issue of men's magazine Esquire, former Xbox 360 top man Peter Moore recalls how he once lost his cool and said "F*** you!" to Sega dev and Sonic creator, Yuji Naka. The boardroom bust-up happened as the Dreamcast's fortunes were plummeting in the face of competition from PlayStation 2.

Moore - who helped launch Sega's ill-fated machine and was working for the company at the time - wanted to find out how consumers perceived Sega compared with other games companies. He gathered a focus group of twentysomethings and asked "If these brands were people, who would they be?" Apparently, Sega turned out to be the "granddad with dementia who used to be cool but you couldn't remember why."

Moore had tapes of the focus group dubbed in Japanese and headed to Tokyo to report the doddering image of Sega to the company's board. However, when he arrived, Yuji Naka - who Moore describes as being "a tad conceited" - accused Moore of tampering with the dialogue. "I lost it," remembers Moore. "I turned to the interpreter and said, 'Tell him, "F*** you"."

Although the translator refused to convey Moore's feelings, he was pretty sure that his message got across. "Naka had lived in the US for three years, so I knew he understood. I walked out and never returned." What a badass.

Oh, and if you're curious, Moore also reveals that the focus group thought Rockstar was the "drunken uncle who'd show up with a hooker from Vegas". And EA - who Moore works for now - was considered to be "the high-school quarter back who always got the cheerleader - an arrogant son of a bitch."

Sources close to Rockstar North have told Eurogamer that downloadable Grand Theft Auto IV content is on track for a late November release.

Parent company Take-Two previously changed the date from autumn to some time between November 2008 and January 2009 - leaving our stockings at risk of being empty.

The content, which is "absolutely exclusive" to Xbox 360, will be made up of at least two episodes around 10 hours in length, complete with extra unlockable Achievements. Speculation on what form it will take has ranged from additional cities to developed side-missions with brand new stories to unravel. There's been no mention of what all this will cost.
