Beachhead Studios has told Eurogamer that if "uber fans" of Modern Warfare 3 don't end up wanting premium accounts for Call of Duty: Elite then the developer will regard that as a failure.
"What we're trying to do is make sure free guys get a huge taste of the game – they bought the game, they already paid – and then if you're an uber fan it will be a slam dunk," Beachhead's Noah Heller told Eurogamer.
"That's our goal. If it's not a slam dunk, we're missing the target."
Call of Duty: Elite allows players to track their stats, organise clans, enter tournaments and study the details of the game online. There will be website, tablet, mobile and console applications for Elite, which is currently in beta.
Heller accepted that the original announcement of the service was unpopular because of references to premium services as part of the platform.
"COD Elite was probably under development with us for over a year and it's a true beta," Heller explained.
"In the games industry, betas are usually marketing things, where you roll it out and it's super-polished and you call it a beta, but we were still learning where we were going. We've been working on features forever and now we have to work on messaging.
"Everything I've shown you today is either free or has a free component. Clans is a great example. Should it be premium? Should it be free? We've actually decided you have to be able to get members of your clan in even if they don't pay for it, so now we've got clans with a mix of free and paid members.
"From the outside it was difficult for us, but it taught us very quickly that we need to react to what the community says if we want to have an online service."
When asked whether Activision and Beachhead would consider stripping away the remaining premium options if fans didn't embrace the service, Heller indicated that he didn't think that would be an issue.
"I think we've already gotten ahead of that curve," he told us.
"Literally all of Career is free, all of Improve is free. In Compete, the difference between premium and free is that there's going to be more competitions for higher-value prizes for premium, which I think our users get – if you want to win a Jeep, you need to be premium. But we're still going to give away backpacks and things like that for free.
"Groups are completely free – it would be no fun if you couldn't get in groups with loads of people. And clans – if you want to unlock everything that a clan has available, yeah that has to be premium."
Check out our Call of Duty: Elite preview to read how the service will work in practice.

It popped up in private beta earlier this summer, but Slide's Photovine is now open to the public, available as a free download on Apple's iOS App Store. Surprisingly there's no Android app yet -- a curious move considering Google (Slide's parent company) isn't known to exclude its own mobile platform with new product rollouts. Huff Post went hands-on with the app, summing it up as "Instagram meets Piictu," also noting the bizarre exclusion of an option to add your Gmail contacts -- though youcan import your friends from Twitter and Facebook. It's probably safe to say that an Android app will be coming soon -- or perhaps some other indication that Google and Slide do in fact share the same roof -- but for now, iPhone owners can slide on down to the source link to get their photo sharing fix.

Last year DirecTV started offering NFL Sunday Ticket To-Go access even to those who couldn't / wouldn't get their satellite packages, and it's upping the ante this year by bringing its slate of football games to the PlayStation 3. NFL Sunday Ticket To-Go is still a $50 add-on that adds HD streaming access on PCs and mobile devices, however this year there's also an app for the Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Android tablets. PS3 owners can get in on the action either by adding the To-Go option or paying a flat $339.95 without DirecTV service. Of course, it's still interested in enticing people to switch to the dish by offering Sunday Ticket at no additional charge for new subscribers -- just ask fairy Deion Sanders after the break. No word on any apps for Boxee, Roku and the rest, but other new additions for the 2011 season (now that the lockout is resolved and it's actually happening) include a new four channel mix with larger cells for those late afternoon games, and integration with NFL.com Fantasy Football that lets viewers keep up with their scores and players right on the TV.

EA is looking to reimagine and bring back "a couple" of classic franchises, newly-promoted EA Labels president Frank Gibeau teased at GamesCom.
Speaking to CVG in Cologne, the former EA Games boss stressed that the pubishing giant - which wowed showgoers with Battlefield 3, Mass Effect 3 and more today - needs more reasons than just updated tech to revive one of its many vault classics.

"We do have a couple of old franchises that we're looking at right now... reimagining them and bringing them back," he said.

"We've got 25 years of good IPs and I've worked on a few of them in my career like Road Rash and the Strike series. So I have a strong affinity for a lot of the things we've done in the past.

"We kind of have a rule which is you've got to have a really good reason to bring something back - What can you do to it that makes it fresh and brings something new to the equation of the franchise?"

He added: "Like basically what we did with Medal of Honor when we brought it back; we looked at going after more modern themes... the war that's happening now as opposed to a historical war. That was the reason we brought Medal of Honor back.

"But when we look at Road Rash, the Strike series or some of these other franchises we really challenge ourselves. We can't just put them on new tech with the same gameplay from ten years ago, we've got to have something new. That's the typical challenge that we have."

EA is hotly rumoured to be working away on a remake of Bullfrog RTS Syndicate, while a revival of Road Rash was reportedly canned some years ago.

What say you, readers? Which EA classics would you like to see revived in HD?

Kinect can break records again this Christmas, with the help of big brands such as Disney and Star Wars.
That's according to Microsoft marketing director Michael Johnson, who reckons the 360 motion sensor can top the huge success of last Christmas.

He told CVG at GamesCom: "We think we can [top last Christmas] because this year what we're trying to do is a combination of continuing to innovate and have new things, plus big IP like Disney and Star Wars.

"By bringing in new entertainment properties it makes it so that we're not just going after the hardcore gamer - we have great games for them - but we're not just going after the broad customer either. We have a full range of experiences for the full range of customers.

"There could be a very near future where somebody buys an Xbox 360 just for entertainment - because using your voice to engage with entertainment is something that they want to have."

Pressed if Microsoft has more big brands in the pipeline for the motion sensor, Johnson replied simply, "yes".

Last month Ubisoft president Yves Guillemot sent the rumour mill into overdrive when he suggested that Sony will be forced into rush-releasing PS4in the wake of Nintendo bringing out the Wii U.
But new Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan shrugged off such claims when CVG put them to him at Gamescom - implying that there's no next-gen console coming from his company anytime soon.

"All I'm focussed on right now is making the most of PS3," he said. "We've over 50 million PS2's installed across our PAL territory, and as you've heard yesterday we're up to 22 [million] on PS3, so there is a long way to go. That's all we need to focus on for now."

Instead of looking towards PS4, Ryan says - as suspected - that top of his list of things to do is to launch the new console Sony has confirmed - Vita - more successfully than its many PSP predecessors.

"It's obviously a top priority," he admitted. "We're going to launch early next year and it's critical that a marketplace the size of ours has a succesful launch, installs a lot of product, and that we publish all the great games that we have [lined up for it]."

Ryan insists it will succeed where previous iterations failed for two reasons: "The quality of the content available at launch far exceeds anything we've had on any platform [at the same stage], not just PSP. Marketing great content is much more straightforward than marketing content that perhaps is not so great.

"Secondly, come the fall [2012] you're going to see the heavy guns from the third party community coming to the platform, giving us additional momentum for the Christmas selling season."

Those heavy guns include 2K, with a debut handheld instalment of Bioshock, and Activision, which is bringing Call Of Duty to the new machine. But it's the bespoke Assassin's Creed game for Vita that Ryan is most excited about.

"The guys at Ubi are going to do something very special with Assassins Creed," he says. "It'll be built from the ground up - a brand new game designed with the new interfaces in mind. That IP, with the strength of the characters Ubi always put in those games, and Vita with all the sexy new stuff it's doing, can be a really potent combination."

Microsoft has released a video that shows off the new Xbox 360 dashboard update expected this autumn.
The video focuses on the firm's aim to make media navigation easy via the voice control technology in Kinect and the search capabilities of Bing on Xbox. It's also one of the few times the company has showed off the new-look menu system, which appears to scrap a lot of the fancy graphics for a more straight-to-the-point boxy format.

In an accompanying blog post, MS said, "At Microsoft, we believe there's also a shift underway in how consumers access and control this ever-growing avalanche of TV shows, sports programming, movies, online videos, video games, music and more. At E3, we dropped a few hints regarding how we plan to enhance and expand the entertainment options available to consumers."

It went on: "Our philosophy is pretty simple: All the entertainment you want, with the people you care about, made easy... This video brings that philosophy to life, while showing off what the combination of Xbox, Kinect, Bing and voice recognition can do for your entertainment experience.

"Thanks to Bing, Kinect and our voice recognition technology, we envision a future where the words "Hey, where's the remote?" are as outdated as eight-track tapes and rotary telephones."

MS recently updated it's the Xbox dashboard to incorporate PayPal support and compatibility with its new disc format among other things.

Speaking to Eurogamer at Gamescom, Noah Heller of Call Of Duty: Elite developer Beachhead confirmed that the PC version of the upcoming Modern Warfare 3 will sport the feature that was so lamentable an absence from 2009's Modern Warfare 2. "The big announcement today is that we're supporting dedicated servers for PC, which is really cool," he said. As for Elite itself, Heller revealed that as well as mobile, tablet and browser-based versions of the service, there will also be a console app allowing users to "jump out of the game into the app and communicate with your clan or do whatever you need to do before running back into the game.

You may have already forgotten the iPhone location-tracking furor, but 27,000 South Koreans haven't! They (or the lawyers recruiting them) have launched a class action suit against Apple due to the 'emotional distress' suffered. The litigants are seeking around $1,000 apiece in damages. From the article: 'Apple has faced complaints and criticisms since it said in April that its iPhones were storing locations of nearby cellphone towers and Wi-Fi hot spots for up to a year. Such data can be used tocreate a rough map of the device owner's movements.'"
