Organisers of the Gamescom consumer and trade event in Cologne, Germany have revealed that the 2011 expo has so far attracted 20 per cent more exhibitors than at the same time last year.
Due to run from August 17 to 21, the event has already confirmed exhibitors including Nintendo, Sega, Capcom, Electronic Arts, Konami, Namco Bandai, Ubisoft, Warner Bros., Take-Two Interactive, Bethesda Softworks, Valve and Deep Silver.
Online companies including Frogster, NCsoft, and Trion Worlds are also registered for the event, as well as hardware suppliers Hama, Razer and Bigben Interactive.
According to organisers many companies have significantly increased the size of their exhibition space from the previous year. 2011 will also see the first country-specific exhibition at Gamescom, with a special Mexican pavilion.
"We are currently working at full steam on a trade fair exhibit that will excite all generations of gamers. We look forward to reuniting with our fans from all across Europe in Cologne," said Michael Auer, central European sales & marketing director for Capcom.
"We are looking forward to being a significant part of Gamescom in this important and exceptionally strong year for us. We are now using the coming months to present our titles in an impressive way to an international community of excited video game fans in Europe as well."

Nominees for the Best Original Video Game Score at the 56th Ivor Novello Awards have been announced, with Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, James Bond 007: Blood Stone, and Shogun 2: Total War all under consideration.
Nitin Sawhney was nominated for Ninja Theory's Enslaved, Richard Jacques for Blood Stone, from now shuttered developer Bizarre Creations, and Richard Beddow, Richard Birdsall, and Ian Livingstone for The Creative Assembly's Shogun 2.
The 2010 ceremony was the first to introduce a special video game category, although the awards themselves are now in their sixth decade. The categories are presented annually by the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors and judged by the music community, with no input from publishers or record companies.
The winner of last year's award was Guerrilla Games' Killzone 2, with other nominees being Empire: Total War and Savage Moon: Waldgeis.
The 2011 winners will be announced at a gala event on May 19, at Grosvenor House in London. Further information can be found at the official website.

Games which offer credit for downloading other apps could be barred

Apple is thought to be slamming the door on an incentive scheme where users are offered in-game credits for downloading other App Store games.
The App Store vendor is said to be removing “very high profile” games that promise in-game money as reward for downloading apps from other developers.

Apple has not publicly commented on the matter, though mobile games publicationPocketGamer.biz says “well-placed development sources” have confirmed that a ban is being initiated.
“Several games, some of them very high profile and previously available on the App Store, have now been rejected with the reason given that they offer virtual currency in exchange for other app downloads,” the publication said.
The publication suggested that, due to the frequency of the matter, Apple has likely making “wholesale changes” to the iOS ecosystem.
‘Download incentivisation’ is said to have become a key business opportunity to App Store developers, particularly those which struggle with the conundrum of monetising free-to-play games.
The process of in-game incentives usually involves a developer and mobile networking partner such as TapJoy or OpenFeint.
A game will draw attention to other games supported by a networking partner. “The vast majority of the freemium industry” use the model, PocketGamer.biz said.
Big Time Gangsta (developed by Glu Mobile) rewards users 61 credits for buying a $4.99 app called Cleopatra's Pyramid (developed by Game Duell).
Such credits, bought outright, would have normally cost $9.99.
It is unknown how, in this instance, both parties share the revenue gained.

Glu Mobile uses the App Store networking service Tapjoy, which previously claimed to have helped enticed 1.5 million additional downloads per day using the scheme.

There's plenty of folks that will sell you a so-called "consolized" Neo Geo MVS arcade system, but you won't find many quite as impressive as this bit of kit from Analogue Interactive. Crafted from 100 percent real walnut, the console boasts a seamless design without any visible screws or nails, all the audio / video outputs you could want (for a Neo Geo, that is), and even some working dust flaps. Of course, it does come at a bit of a premium price -- but $649 is actually the exact same price that SNK's original Neo Geo AES home console sold for back in the day, and it was only made out of plastic. Check out the gallery below for a closer look, and hit up the source link below to get your order in if you like what you see -- the first units are expected to ship early next month.

Woah! In the world of big-time lawsuits, this must be just about the biggest. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Apple has sued Samsung Electronics for copying "the look and feel" of its iPad tablet and iPhone smartphone. This relates to the Samsung Galaxy S 4G, which bears more than a passing resemblance to the iPhone 3G / 3GS models, and the slightly less obvious Epic 4G, Nexus S, and Galaxy Tab (presumably the older 7-inch model, since the newer ones aren't out yet) devices. The claim for intellectual property infringement is phrased as follows:
"Rather than innovate and develop its own technology and a unique Samsung style for its smart phone products and computer tablets, Samsung chose to copy Apple's technology, user interface and innovative style in these infringing products."

The lawsuit was filed in the Northern District of California on Friday and seeks injunctions against Samsung, damages (both actual and punitive), and a finding that the infringement was willful. Lest we forget, the rarest outcome in such legal tussles is for an actual judgment to actually be handed down, so the greatest likelihood is that this will just lead to another round of grudging handshakes and licensing going one way with money going the other way, but still, it's fun to see the big dogs barking at each other.

Another aspect to these proceedings that shouldn't be overlooked is that, on the software front, they boil down to iOS versus Android (again). When Apple calls Samsung uninventive in its user interface, it's talking more about Android's perceived imitation of the iPhone's interface than whatever TouchWiz tweaks Samsung has slapped on top. And hey, if you're going to sue Google indirectly, you can't leave a major player like Samsung outside the courtroom, it just wouldn't be fair.

Flash has been a thorn in Apple's side ever since the first iPhone shipped almost 4 years ago. While users have grown accustomed to their iOS devices not being able to display Flash content, it's unfortunate that Apple and Adobe have not been able to reach some sort of compromise before now.

Adobe, however, may have finally come up with a solution to the Flash dilemma once and for all with their latest version of Flash. At the National Association of Broadcasters trade show in Las Vegas, Adobe recently previewed the latest version of Flash that incorporates HTTP live streaming. With this new version of Flash, iOS devices will finally be able to display Flash video without the need to install any additional software on their devices.

Over the years Apple has been steadfast in their opposition to approving Flash for the iOS. Continually citing concerns over Flash’s poor overall performance and being detrimental to battery life.
