But at the same time, retail research shows the number of new games released is at a six-year low

The average price of a video game last year was £24.32, Chart-Track data has revealed.
That number is a 7.2 per cent increase over 2009, where the average price was just £22.69.

Surprisingly, it was supermarkets that increased prices the most. The average price of a game at a grocer set gamers back £23.93, an 8.7 per cent rise compared to 2009.
Despite the rise, specialist, generalists and indies are still the most expensive games retailers out there. The average price of a game from these stores in 2010 was £25.31, an 8.2 per cent increase over 2009.
Online retail prices were also up last year, albeit not as much as other outlets. Games online on average were priced at £22.97, a 5.4 per cent increase over the £21.80 recorded in 2009.

In terms of the number of titles released, there were just 1,626 games that debuted at UK retail in 2010, the lowest in almost six years.
It’s a sharp decline on the 1,777 titles released in 2009 and is in fact the lowest number since 2004, when there was also 1,626 games released.
The numbers reflect the traditional console cycle, with fewer games released in the last few years of a console generation as publisher priorities change.
However, these figures do not take into account digital sales and are for retail only.

Black Ops beats Avatar and Take That, nine video games in the Entertainment Top 40

3.3 million copies of Call of Duty: Black Ops were sold in 2010, making it the most successful entertainment property of the year, according to ERA.
The game beat the DVD/Blu-ray of Avatar, which sold 3m units since launch. The highest charted music CD was Take That’s Progress in fifth place, which shifted over 1.9m units.

Other big video game hits include EA’s FIFA 11 in third place, which sold 2.4m units last year, while both Just Dance and Just Dance 2 are in the Top 40. Together both games sold through 2.2m units at retail.
The Top Three products in the Top 40 impressively outsold their 2009 counterparts. Black Ops sold 340,000 more copies in its first few months than Modern Warfare 2 managed during the same period, while FIFA 11 sold 235,000 more units in Q4 2010 than FIFA 10 did during Q4 2009.
Meanwhile, Avatar sold 800,000 more discs than 2009’s biggest movie, Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince.

New first party gaming experiences will lead innovation for motion camera this year

Format holder Microsoft is ramping up its support for Kinect with a raft of new games and innovations.
The firm already has a host of first party titles in different genres such as Kinect Sports, Dance Central and Kinectimals, but has plans to announce a line-up of brand new titles as early as E3 this year.

“I can guarantee that Rare and all of our other studios are looking at what we’re doing on Kinect and coming up with some amazing new experiences that people will love,” Microsoft’s UK GM for retail sales and marketing Neil Thompson told MCV. “That’s what we’re focusing on.”
Rare’s studio manager Scott Henson said: “We’ve got E3 coming up, and there’ll be lots of exciting things happening there.”
The first-party Microsoft developer also hinted we’ll soon see Kinect’s next wave of games which will take the technology to a new level. And Rare wants to be leading the charge.

“As a first party studio, our job is to lead innovation on the platform,” added Henson. “We take that seriously, and you’ll see plenty from us in the coming months. I’m sure you’ll see loads from third-party too.”

Happy with your shiny new copy of Internet Explorer 9? It's already out of date -- Microsoft just announced Internet Explorer 10 at its MIX developer conference in Las Vegas, and if you're running Windows you can grab a spoon right now and sample an early taste. You can download the new Platform Preview right now at Microsoft's Test Drive site and see where the company's going with this early iteration, which adds support for additional web standards like CSS Gradients and CSS3 Flexible Box Layout. According to the press release, a gentleman named Dean Hachamovitch just revealed the new browser on the MIX stage, but we're actually watching him speak right now, and... he's not quite there yet. We'll let you know what he says.

    Update: Video after the break!

Update 2: Dean and Steven Sinofsky (president of the Windows division) are indeed showing it off on stage, but they're just performing the same Test Drive tests you could run at home -- go on, you know you want to dip your toe in that HTML5 fishbowl.

Update 3: Oh, Dean, you're such a tease -- that copy of IE10 (and by association, Windows) was running on a 1GHz ARM chip! Yes, Windows on ARM -- photographic evidence after the break.

Update 4: NVIDIA just tweeted that the mysterious ARM chip is in fact a Tegra 2 processor.

"Independent retro games retailer Good Old Games has spoken out about digital rights management, saying that it can actually drive gamers to piracy, rather than acting as a deterrent. In an interview, a spokesperson for Good Old Games said that the effectiveness of DRM as a piracy-deterrent was 'None, or close to none.' 'What I will say isn't popular in the gaming industry,' says Kukawski, 'but in my opinion DRM drives people to pirate games rather than prevent them from doing that. Would you rather spend $50 on a game that requires installing malware on your system, or to stay online all the time and crashes every time the connection goes down, or would you rather download a cracked version without all that hassle?'"http://games.slashdot.org/story/11/0...Good-Old-Games ...

    2. Nintendo 3DS News

Sales of the Nintendo 3DS have "slowed considerably" since the initial launch, according to analysts, with predictions suggesting the new portable will not match the success of the DS.
"Based on our recent checks, we believe that sales of the 3DS have slowed considerably since the initial launch window, although the Easter holiday could provide a near-term boost," said Lazazrd Capital Markets' Colin Sebastian, according to IndustryGamers.
A new report from research firm Screen Digest suggests that the 3DS will see "rapid adoption" in 2011, with a healthy 11.6 million sales by the end of the year. However, it cites competition from tablets and smartphones as reasons why the 3DS is unlikely to equal the sales of the DS.
By 2015 Screen Digest estimates 70 million unit sales for the 3DS, compared to 91 million for the Nintendo DS and DS Lite over the same period.
The Nintendo DS family of consoles has currently sold upwards of 145 million units worldwide, putting it on course to become the most successful video game format of all time - beating even the PlayStation 2 on 150 million.
The 3DS has been launched in a very different market to that of the DS in 2004 though, with recent estimates placing US launch figures at 750,000. This compares to 303,000 in Europe, including, 113,000 in the UK and 50,000 in Germany.
With Nintendo reticent to reveal even those launch figures the only country to provide regular weekly hardware updates is Japan, where the 3DS has sold only 800,000 units in its first month compared to its target of 1.5 million.
As a result of the latter Nintendo ADR shares reached a two year low at the end of last week, over increasing uncertainty over the format's future sales potential.

UPDATE: A SEGA spokesperson has given Kotakuthe following statement: "SEGA is committed to supporting any fans that take an interest in our games, and where possible we do so by involving them in Beta tests and other development, marketing or research opportunities.
"However we need to protect our intellectual property rights and this may result in us requesting that our fans remove online imagery, videos or games in some instances."
ORIGINAL STORY: SEGA has demanded that a hugely ambitious fan-made remake of its classic Streets of Rage beat 'em up be taken down from the web.
As reported by Gamasutra, developer Bomber Games unofficial effort had finally gone live last week following eight years in development. The free download boasted 103 stages, 19 playable characters, 64 enemies, 83 remixed songs, more than 40 cutscenes and eight different endings.
On top of all that, it had also shoehorned in a Survival Mode, Boss Rush Mode, Events Mode, Volleyball Mode, Allied CPU Mode, Profile Editor, Image Gallery, and a fistful of customisation options.
SEGA's lawyers clearly weren't as impressed as the internet at large was, however, asking the developer to take the game down.
"SEGA have contacted regarding the download hosted on this site," wrote a moderator on theBomber Games forum. "While this issue is being resolved, please do not upload the game for others to download. Any links posted on this site will be removed. Thank you."

Opera has always been the little browser that could, and the company is now embracing that spirit more than ever with its new ad campaign for the just-released Opera 11.10. To that end, it's launched a new ad campaign that it proudly boasts is its most expensive ever -- a record-setting $8,517.26, including a hefty $1,500 that they splurged on some "trendy Swedish clothes." Of course, the browser itself is the real story here and, while it's an incremental upgrade, it does boast a few fairly big new features, including support for Google's new WebP image format, a "SpeedDial" for your favorite websites, and a turbo mode that promises to compress and load web pages faster when you're on a slow connection. Just how does that work? We'll let Opera's Christen Krogh explain in the no-expenses-spared video after the break.
