Sony's US president Jack Tretton has explained some of the thinking behind the PlayStation Suite - the new software offering for Android smartphones and tablets, revealed yesterday at the PlayStation Meeting in Tokyo.

He admitted that it was important to acknowledge the massive growth and success in the smartphone market with devices from Google and Apple, and Sony would be wasting the PlayStation heritage if it were to ignore the market entirely.

"We've always been about, what is the market? What is the opportunity? Seize the opportunity and differentiate yourself," Tretton told Engadget.

"To sit there and stick your head in the sand and say, 'smartphones are irrelevant, there are no other gaming mediums,' I think would be foolish, and it would be a disadvantage for us, because we have all these great games. We have this great gaming heritage."

"If you truly believe in your brand and you truly believe in your technology, expose yourself to as many consumers as possible, so hopefully PlayStation Suite introduces people to the PlayStation brand and ultimately they follow the breadcrumbs back to NGP and to our other devices. We've got this huge library of PlayStation One games that are tremendous games, especially when compared to a lot of the other stuff you're seeing on smartphones. That already sets the bar very, very, high."

By releasing original PlayStation games on a PlayStation Store - accessible on multiple handsets - Sony hopes to raise the bar for gaming experiences, despite the age of the software.

"The PSOne games are already state-of-the-art compared to what a number of consumers get with that type of investment on a smartphone," offered Tretton. "It's gonna set a level that'll force other games to measure themselves against, in terms of what they can economically justify.

"I would stack a lot of those PSOne experiences very fairly against what people are spending good money on [with smartphone titles], and I think it is a buyer beware market because there's no standard. Anybody puts anything out they want out on a smartphone and you don't know what you get until you buy it. I hope with the credibility of the PlayStation Suite, there'll be an expectation that we can execute against in terms of quality."

And the PlayStation Suite could be another entry level for budding design talent, according to Tretton, following opportunities though the PlayStation Network and PlayStation Minis.

"Now with things like the PlayStation Network and smaller digital games, you've really got a great breeding ground for development and we've reaped great dividends, and not only great content but great developers that have gone on to do bigger and better games, and we never would've gotten the opportunity to know them if it wasn't for things like Minis and PlayStation Network. So I think PlayStation Suite expands that even more."

Last week a Nintendo UK spokesperson informed Eurogamer that the 3DS's eShop would go live on launch day, courtesy of a system update.

However, CEO Satoru Iwata has now cruelly over-ruled that claim, announcing that the patch won't hit until May.

Speaking at an investor call in Japan last night, the Nintendo boss explained, "The first system update is scheduled for late May, at almost the same time around the world."

That update will add the eShop, a web browser and a function that allows you to transfer DSiWare purchases over from your old handheld.

As previously detailed, the eShop will stock its virtual shelves with a (hopefully) tempting array of vintage Game Boy classics, DSiWare, new 3DS digital titles, demos and trailers.

Iwata offered no explanation as to why the new console – which arrives in Europe on 25th May - will be launching without these key features.

Sony is asking PSP developers to release downloadable versions of their games so they can played on its new NGP handheld.

Speaking in an interview with Japanese site Impress Watch, as translated by Andriasang, Sony boss Kaz Hirai explained that Sony's new handheld device will be backwards compatible with PSP titles but only those that have been made available as downloads.

As a result, Hirai added, Sony has asked developers to release digital versions of their games.

Hirai also explained that PSP games will run completely through emulation on its new portable system, which was unveiled in Tokyo earlier this week. Users will be able to transfer over any games already downloaded on their PSP as long as they are still within the download limits set by PlayStation Network.

The majority of PSP games are currently available as downloads through PlayStation Store. However, there are a few notable exceptions, including most recently Square Enix's Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep.

Okay, fess up. Who ticked off Microsoft? The platform holder has just cancelled the free Xbox Live Gold membership weekend announced earlier this week across most of Europe.

The announcement came via a Tweet from Xbox's European Community Manager Graeme Boyd.

No explanation was offered as to why, but a handful of countries will still be treated to the promotion. Gamers in Russia, Poland, Greece, South Africa, Czech Republic and Hungary: fill your boots.

Everyone else will just have to wait. "I'm told that 'we'll be in a position soon to announce a further Free LIVE Weekend.' Apologies for any inconvenience." Boyd added in a later Tweet.

According to a post on Major Nelson's blog, the offer will go ahead in the USA as planned.

Is the Next Generation Portable capable of running a blockbuster third-person shooter such as Gears of War 3? According to creator Epic, a Gears of War style "experience" would be "appropriate" for Sony's shiny new handheld.

Sony unveiled the PSP successor, which features two thumb sticks, at a Tokyo press conference yesterday.

Speaking to Eurogamer following the unveiling, vice president of Epic Games Mark Rein emphasised the NGP's graphical power.

"This is the kind of machine that a Gears of War-style experience would be appropriate on because it has the control layout that games like that are designed for and can produce some pretty compelling visuals," he said.

"Activision announced Call of Duty for the device so of course a Gears-style game would also be appropriate."

Much has been made of the NGP's graphical horsepower, with some insisting it is capable of producing PlayStation 3 quality visuals.

When asked for his honest assessment of this claim, Rein replied: "This device is certainly in the same class as PlayStation 3. With Unreal Engine 3, we're able to produce some pretty spectacular visuals on this device already, and we're just getting started."

During Sony's press conference Epic founder Tim Sweeney took to the stage to confirm Unreal Engine 3 support for NGP and showed the Epic Citadel iOS tech demo running on the new handheld.

"This is made possible by Sony's multi-core GPU, which is roughly 4x as powerful as any portable we've previously seen," he said.

Sweeney went on to introduce a demo of Trendy Entertainment's UE3-powered Dungeon Defenders, a PC, PSN and XBLA game. Converting from PS3 took a week, apparently.

Rein went into more detail on the game, and confirmed that PS3/NGP cross-platform play is possible.

"Dungeon Defenders is essentially a PS3 game brought to NGP," he said. "At CES this year, Trendy showed Dungeon Defenders on a Tegra 2 mobile device playing multiplayer against a PlayStation 3. Trendy told me they're planning to have NGP players playing against PS3 players. So this part is already a reality.

"All they need to add is the ability to save your status in the cloud so you can pick up and play on another device and they're done. That's not a hard problem to solve and I suspect Sony will offer a good solution for that via PSN at some point."

But what of Epic itself? Does it plan to develop NGP games?

"Right now we're concentrating on Unreal Engine 3 and we're very excited with the results," said Rein. "Multiple UE3 licensees tells us they're building games they plan to ship on NGP and I suspect we'll hear more about that throughout the year."

Summing up his feelings about the device, Rein was unable to single out his favourite NGP feature.

"This is a bit of a cop-out but I'd say it's the complete package; multiple control methods, great screen, an OS that gives you low-level access to the hardware, great processing power on both CPU and GPU, GPS, 3G, dual cameras – all this on a high-end portable gaming device. There's a lot to like there."

Sony is expected to begin rolling out the NGP from late 2011.

It's not surprising but it is exciting - Nintendo is making "Pokemon related products" for 3DS.

Nintendo overlord Satoru Iwata dropped the hint to investors yesterday. This represents the first we've heard of a new Pokemon game on 3DS.

Unless of course he meant a Pokemon-themed stylus or 3DS carry case.

"We are also developing Pokémon related products on the Wii and 3DS," said Iwata, reported by Official Nintendo Magazine.

"We will gradually over time inform you of them."

A new Pokemon game on 3DS is a no-brainer. The franchise sells by the bucket-load on DS - latest instalment Pokemon Black and White has notched five million sales in Japan alone.

But it's interesting Iwata should mention Wii, too. The last and inaugural Pokemon game on Wii - Pokemon Battle Revolution from 2007 - was terrible. Eurogamer described it as "an entirely pointless release that makes no effort to give you value for money". 4/10.

Just spotted this news over at GBATemp

The Pandora may cost $499.99 after pre-orders have ended. The "private page" discovered by a secret ninja spy reveals an order form for parts and a much more expensive Pandora system. There is no information linking to a justification for the raised cost and the page itself may just be a test page with dummy information. We are asking, is the Pandora worth $500 USD? Contribute to the discussion and let us know your thoughts.

The Pandora is a great and very powerful console but 500 Dollars may be a tad too much? ...

Deunan the coder of Dreamcast Emulator Makaron, gives his verdict on Sony winning the court case against Geohot

Might as well follow up on my last entry - geohot got served with TRO just now.

I read the papers he got served and I'm confused. While I fully expected DMCA to be used at some point... how exactly does SONY get to use it in a CIVIL lawsuit? You can do that in US courts? If so, your legal system is completly wacky.

At first I thought SONY was just trying to present a case, and DMCA was only mentioned to express urgency and necessity of the TRO. You know, like by saying "He is a bad guy, Your Honor, he must be stopped before he does more damage". So I can fully understand statements like "breach of contract" and "interference with contractual relations". This is what SONY claims and must prove - obviously it remains to be seen if they can do that.

But the main reason for ordering TRO was mostly DMCA violation. How the hell does that work? Violating DMCA is penal offence/crime. Someone, please, explain it to me how does SONY get to motion anything in a civil case based on that? And more importantly, how does a judge rule in a civil case with penal law? Because this blows my mind...

Digitimes is reporting on the possibility of the iPhone 5 touting a dual-core processor. Not much of a surprise, considering that the new Android devices will be sporting such chips, and I don't see Apple falling short for competition. This means better gaming and video experiences, as well as a nice speed increase. We should see this migrate over well to the iPad 2, so we can expect to see upgrades on both devices.

With strong competition coming from Google devices, and other smartphones, Apple sounds like they are ready to up the competition once again. The iPhone 5 is expected to be released in the USA about June or July, (same months that iPhone 4 debuted last year), however it seems as though most of this ETA is mostly based on rumors, but then again, the iPhone 5 is a rumor all together.

Can we expect dual-core processors? Probably. Can we expect the iPhone 5 this year?
