    News via http://wejp.k.vu/gmu/gmu-0-7-2_released

Here is another Gmu release with several new features and bugfixes. Once again Gmu is available for several platforms: GP2X, GP2X Wiz, Dingoo A320/A330, Ben Nanonote, Pandora Handheld and for the first time the Zipit Z2. Caanoo users please have a look here.

The Zipit is kind of special in that there is no operating system everyone uses, so it isn't really possible to create a package that everyone can use. I have included Gmu in my little Linux system for the Z2, though. Also I am including a Z2 package here which should work for those root filesystems which are based on uClibc.

    Changes since the last release:
» Speex decoder plugin for playing .spx files
» Autoscroll feature: Gmu can automatically scroll the playlist view to the currently played track
» Command line tool for controling Gmu (can also work over the network)
» Pandora: Gmu window can be closed by clicking the close button
» Pandora: Fullscreen option added (press F to toggle fullscreen)
» Support for the Zipit Z2 platform
» Bugfix: Time display was only partly visible when playtime/length was above 99:99
» Bugfix: The display backlight power-off timer was not being disabled when switching to another virtual terminal (Ben Nanonote/Zipit Z2)
» Simplified process of adding new platforms/devices
» Some other changes and bugfixes I forgot to mention

Pandora users: It seems on some Pandoras Gmu does not remember its settings, which is not a bug in Gmu but a bug with the PND system. In such cases Gmu simply cannot store its configuration. If you are in doubt, please check if there are Gmu's config files on your SD card under /pandora/appdata/gmu-7. In those cases where storing the settings did not work, sometimes there were subdirectories with strange names (with several dots or commas in it name) in that /pandora/appdata/gmu-7 directory. You might also want to try to remove the gmu-7 directory and then start Gmu.

Ben NanoNote users: To be able to use some new features and key mappings you need to remove your user config directory before running Gmu. Simply delete /root/.config/gmu/

GP2X users: This release works with the Open2X firmware only. When you are still using the old GPH firmware, please use Gmu 0.6.3 instead ...

    News via http://wejp.k.vu/gmu/gmu_on_the_caanoo

I have recently been asked by several people if I would create a port of the Gmu music player for the Caanoo handheld. While I would like to do that, it is not that simple because I don't have a Caanoo myself. This means porting would be a really cumbersome work as I would not be able to test it myself.

Actually, I did not intend to buy a Caanoo (at least not now, I don't like the whole GPH App Store thing very much), but you guys might be able to change my mind on that. If you are one of those people who would like to see Gmu on the Caanoo, you might want to consider donating some money. If there is enough money to buy a Caanoo I will immediately do it. Either way, donating a few bucks will definitely increase my motivation to create a Gmu port for the Caanoo and to further improve Gmu.

Oh, and you guys can now stop asking about Gmu on the Caanoo. ...

Apple is looking for a few good iOS developers to help expand the company's cloud-based offerings. This much can be derived from the two new job postings on Apple's website. The first posting says Apple "is hiring outstanding operations engineers to deliver and manage the next generation of hosted infrastructure serving Apple products and services." The other opening indicates that Apple needs "experienced software engineers to work on distributed computing for data with non-trivial properties, and efficient online services for data access."

Similar to past job postings at Apple that vaguely suggested the possibility of future products (like the iPad) and new services, there are, indeed, times when job listings effectively point to the mysterious projects and other top-secret efforts underway in the tech labs of Cupertino. Naturally, these latest postings (which quietly went live just before the Christmas holiday and are finally getting noticed)...

Not only is Eldar Murtazin the venerable editor-in-chief of the Mobile Review blog, he is also widely regarded as a reliable fountain of insider knowledge in the tech world. Given his reputation, many are taking his latest report as a confirmation of Apple's plans for the iPad 2 - at least with regard to one particular new feature. According to Murtazin, the second generation iPad is definitely getting a USB port.

Talked with colleague which working with some ODM vendors connected with Apple. He is research guy. According to his sources iPad2 will have usb port.

The present lack of a USB port has been an habitual thorn in the side of many gadget gurus and tablet aficionados.
