SEGA will focus on its "three pillars" as it looks to grow: Sonic the Hedgehog, Football Manager and Total War, the publisher's new European boss has revealed.

It's promised gamers that it will work hard to make the three franchises as big as possible as it aims to cement its position as a "successful, medium-sized publisher".

SEGA launched a raft of new intellectual property in recent months, including the disappointing Alpha Protocol. PlatinumGames' Vanquish is due out later this month.

In the future, however, it'll give most love to established franchises.

"Let me be clear again. In Europe, SEGA has three pillars in Sonic, Football Manager and Total War. We are going to be working very hard to make these franchises bigger," Jurgen Post told MCV.

"We know we have Sonic and Football Manager this year, a new Total War next year, and a new Sonic and Virtua Tennis next year. These are the kind of titles that will allow us to focus on being healthy and profitable."

Three Sonic games are due out between now and the end of the year: downloadable game Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1, Wii and DS game Sonic Colours and Kinect title Sonic Free Riders.

Sports Interactive's Football Manager 2011 is due out 5th November. Creative Assembly's Shogun 2: Total War will release next year.

Post said SEGA's growth since the Japanese company's exit from the console manufacturing business in 2001 had seen it evolve.

"There has been a big jump forward, thanks very much to Mario and Sonic," he said.

"Now we have that franchise, other Sonic plans, plus some big IPs like Football Manager, Virtua Tennis, Total War and more.

"The biggest change since I first started at SEGA is that it has gone from a very small publisher to a successful, medium-sized publisher. The challenge now is about sustaining our position and doing the right things going forward."

Konami's revamp of the old X-Men arcade game - coincidentally named X-Men Arcade - will be released this autumn on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade.

We also now know that the developer is Backbone Entertainment - the studio favoured by Capcom for all things PSN/XBLA: Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, 1942: Joint Strike, Commando 3. There's some experience on the two platforms, then.

Available to play in X-Men Arcade will be Cyclops, Colossus, Dazzler, Nightcrawler, Storm and Wolverine. They'll need to work together to take down the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, key enemies in which are Pyro, Blob, Wendigo, Mystique, White Queen, Juggernaught and Magneto.

Up to four people can co-operate locally, and up to six online. Online drop-in means you can hop in and out without faff. Just select your preferred amount of players, difficulty and level and you'll be matched accordingly. Alternatively you can create your own and play host.

X-Men Arcade will be wrapped up in high-definition graphics, which span gameplay, HUD and menus. There's leaderboard support, too.

Although evidence continues to mount that Sony may be planning to bring in a new-generation handheld, the elderly PSP looks to have had a bumper year in Japan.

Hirokazu Hamamura, CEO of Enterbrain (publisher of Famitsu magazine) was highly optimistic about the PlayStation Portable's recent performance, reports Andriasang.

"This year will be the PSP's biggest year," he told an audience of journalists and analysts at his twice-yearly industry seminar on Friday.

Key to this was the success of third party titles, in sharp contrast to Nintendo's rival DS. Monster Hunter Portable 3rd looks to be best-selling PSP game of 2010 in Japan, with Hamamura predicting possible sales of 5 million - a million more than its predecessor.

Hamamura also predicted that "the PSP will expand its market," pointing to the 500,000 sales success of Monster Hunter spin-off Poka Poka Felyne Village. Publisher Capcom has claimed this has attracted a 50 per cent female audience, thanks to more accessible play and a Hello Kitty tie-in.

The PSP has now sold over 15 million units across its various SKUs in Japan, 1.5 million of which were this year. Combined Japanese DS sales for the entirety of 2010 look set to outdo it by a few hundred thousand, however.

US phone and internet provider AT&T will release its U-verse streaming television platform for Xbox 360 on Friday.

The IPTV service is the first time American 360 owners can watch broadcast TV via their console, and also offers on-demand programming. Xbox IPTV was at one point due from BT, but plans were scrapped.

The service is not free even for those with existing U-verse subscriptions. New sign-ups require a $99 installation charge on top of a monthly AT&T internet fee, while current U-verse customers are subject to an additional $55 to activate it on 360.

U-verse involves a leased set-top box which can access 130 channels, many of which are HD, and record shows to its hard drive. The Xbox 360 version requires that there be at least one of these receivers in the home already, but is not subject to an additional monthly fee. "AT&T has a legacy of innovation and teamed up with Microsoft to build a differentiated all-IP TV offering to enable the future of TV services for their customers," said Andreas Mueller-Schubert, Microsoft's general manager of the Media Platforms Business.

"We're excited to extend that relationship today through new initiatives that make TV anywhere a possibility, delivering rich entertainment experiences for consumers across multiple screens, inside and outside the home."

AT&T also plans to offer the service on the new Windows Phone 7 later this year.

EA studio Danger Close has defended its decision to rename a playable multiplayer faction in Medal of Honor from Taliban to Opposing Force.

"We didn't change any pixels in the game at all except for the name," marketing director Craig Owens told Joystiq, "and it only appeared a couple times in multiplayer."

However, he blamed the controversy surrounding the original name on a lack of awareness amongst non-gamers.

"The objection was, kind of from an older generation that doesn't understand games, that the soundbyte was 'Play as the Taliban and kill US soldiers.'

"Later that soundbyte kind of caught wind and got taken out of context, really."

He claimed that it was " just a misunderstanding... It's just one of those transition points, where people who don't play games still think they're just for 12-year-olds and they're just all fun and games and they could never really tell a story like a movie does."

Owens went on to reiterate EA's claim that the game was highly respectful towards US troops.

The Afghanistan-set shooter launches today in the US, with the first concerted wave of reviews due to arrive this afternoon.

A handful of scores have been released already, with the game so far drawing an average of around 8/10 from the likes of CVG, IncGamers and PlanetXbox360.

EA has claimed that it is the most pre-ordered Medal of Honor title ever, although pre-order culture appears to have experienced phenomenal growth in recent years.

Pre-sales of the PC version have, however, been significant enough to see it reach number four in Steam's current best-sellers chart, behind various versions of Left 4 Dead and Civilization V.

Japanese gamers broadly consider Nintendo's 3DS to be on the expensive side, according to a new survey by GetNews.jp.

19.2 per cent of the one thousand gamers surveyed deemed the ¥25,000 / $305 / £192 handheld too expensive, 28.3 expensive and 32.2 'slightly' expensive.

By contrast, 16.4 elected for reasonably-priced, 2 per cent for slightly inexpensive and 0.9 inexpensive.

The RRP was last week defended by Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata, who argued that it was unreasonable to expect handhelds to be cheaper than home consoles, as they do not require peripherals such as screens.

"You do not need any other hardware devices to be connected in order for you to play with it," he told investors recently.

"We do not think, 'the price relationship between portable devices and home consoles must stay intact simply because it used to be that way.'"

Iwata also claimed the device's rapturous reception at EA vindicated a higher retail price than that of the Wii.

The Nintendo 3DS will be launched February 26 in Japan, and March in Europe and the US.

Windows Phone 7 is a success for Microsoft, in that it shows the company coming out swinging in the smartphone wars.
That's our verdict on the company's new smartphone OS, following yesterday's launch event.
The user interface is definably different from rivals like iPhone, Android and BlackBerry. Meanwhile, Microsoft has stolen a march on its rivals with the deep integration of Facebook.
There are quibbles. Orange boss Tom Alexander's appearance on-stage - during which he plugged his network and forgot the name of one of its exclusive handsets - was not a great showing for his company.
Meanwhile, there was no big reveal of apps - in London at least - showing how developers are making innovative use of the WP7 platform. We expect more to break cover in the coming weeks, however.

A survey of US consumers conducted by Lazard Capital Markets has revealed that interest in PlayStation Move and Kinect is high.

According to the results of the survey, demand is healthy despite the relatively high price points of both products and the lack of supporting games.

The survey "suggests healthy demand for Kinect and Sony Move", said Lazard analyst Colin Sebastian. "We are somewhat surprised by the positive reaction given the relatively high price points ($149 for Kinect and $99+ for Move) and the lack of many compatible games for the devices.

"We believe that Sony's Move is off to a good start at retail, with limited supplies, and our survey also bodes well for the launch of Kinect."

However, the survey also suggested that the motion control devices might not have a significant impact on console game sales in the short-term.

"While motion controllers are unlikely to materially impact console game sales in Q4, we do think they could act as a catalyst for stocks, as indicators of future demand for software."

This contradicts Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter, who thinks Move had only "a modest launch".

iOS social games and social networking apps are competing with the biggest US prime-time TV shows for audiences and advertisers, says analytics firm Flurry.
The company has produced data claiming that social games on iPhone, iPod touch and iPad have a daily audience of more than 19 million people, who spend more than 22 minutes a day using these apps.
Flurry points out that this is a bigger audience than prime-time US shows like NBC's Sunday Night Football and CBS' Undercover Boss. What's more, it's only four million behind the biggest US show of all, American Idol.
"Since this analysis focuses on only two categories of applications, social games and social networking apps, it’s clear that iOS devices are already ahead of prime time television’s hottest shows," blogs Flurry's Peter Farago.
"Also noteworthy is that the enormous audience these applications reach takes place every day, 365 days a year. Compared to a top television series, which airs 22 episodes a season, advertisers can reach a larger consumer audience through applications 15 times more frequently."

That said, the iOS social gaming audience is more fragmented: brands can still place an ad within American Idol and hope to hit as much as 23 million viewers.
Targeting a similarly-sized audience on iOS is more complicated and fragmented at present, with Apple's iAd network still gathering steam.
