Apple is investigating reports that its iOS, which powers the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, is vulnerable to hackers.
According to Reuters, IT security firms Symantec, Lookout and Vupen have warned that a bug in the software could enable hackers to 'enslave' target devices.
The security loophole could allow the iPhone/iPad's Safari browser to automatically download a PDF containing malicious code (disguised as a font), which can then take control of the device.
The bug is also capable of sending itself to other devices as well as installing hidden tracking software and making calls to the emergency services. Nice.

Playing Xbox games online is no longer under threat – if it ever was - following Microsoft's victory in a legal battle over multiplayer gaming.

A US district court judge chucked a case out against Microsoft that claimed the US console manufacturer infringed a patent for multiplayer gaming, Gamasutra reports.

In 1994, when dinosaurs roamed the earth, Harold Milton Jr. filed the patent 'Apparatus and method for electrically connecting remotely located videogames'.

He called it a system "for two or more players playing the same video game to compete with each other without using the same physical video game which alleviates the necessity of proximity of the players". Forward-thinking bloke, that Milton.

In 2004, after the dinosaurs had been made extinct, Milton filed suit against Microsoft and Sony, accusing the console manufacturers of infringing on the patent with Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, and sought royalties and an injunction against their continued use.

Sony settled out of court with Milton last April, but Microsoft stood firm.

Last week, the judge made it all worthwhile when he ordered Milton to pay Microsoft's legal fees. Bet that'll burn a hole in his wallet.

The judge didn't like the term "electrical connection", and decided Xbox Live uses nothing of the sort. ...

Team 17 has spoken to IncGamers about digital distribution and talked about the main problems that the PSPGo encountered.

Studio head Martyn Brown revealed that digitial distribution dramatically helped the team with the releases of Worms 2: Armageddon and Alien Breed Impact.

Brown revealed, “Of course, it’s totally changed the playing field for us and put the control back in our hands. I would imagine none of this [release of Alien Breed and Worms] would have happened without the move to digital.”

When asked whether the gaming industry could solely survive on digital distribution in the future after the failed-attempt of the PSPGo, Brown was adamant it could.

“Digital Distribution is here to stay” he explained, “I think the issues with the PSPGO were somewhat different, basically the cost of the hardware, the software library and it’s pricing – the problem wasn’t that it was a digital device – look at the iPhone & appstore.”

Member of the illustrious iPhone Developer Program? Well, aren't you special? So special, in fact, that you're once again being granted access to a highly-coveted iOS build that the unwashed commoners can't get: yet another beta of iOS 4.1. This time around, it's beta 3, suggesting that Apple might be getting close to having this thing ready for the mass market; after all, it's been just a week since beta 2, and Apple tends to accelerate the pace when a release is drawing near. Now, what about that iPad version?

Update: Looks like there's some bad news for legacy users in this update... namely the fact that Game Center compatibility for second gen iPod touches and the iPhone 3G has been dropped. Thanks for nothing, Apple!
