New data from the NPD shows that portable game systems are increasing in popularity among kids aged 4 to 14. 44% of kids in the U.S. between these ages use a handheld, up eight percent from a similar study in 2005. What happened since 2005? Oh, right, the PSP and DS Lite. And the iPhone, for that matter. Just eight percent?

According to the report, more kids own portable game systems than other types of devices. In addition, NPD noted that many of these handhelds were acquired used, with more kids receiving used game systems in 2009 than in 2008.

"Kids ages 14 and under were the primary recipient of 37 percent of hardware unit sales for the 12 months ending March 2010," NPD analyst Anita Frazier told IndustryGamers, also noting that the amount of kid-targeted digital content being downloaded is on the rise, suggesting that kids are open to the transition to digital distribution.

Capcom has revealed that the Mega Man Zero Collection for DS will hit its projected "early summer" release, despite its delay in Japan. Specifically, the publisher announced that the compilation of four Game Boy Advance side-scrollers will arrive in North America on June 8 for $30. That's just $7.50 per Zero! Additionally, a new trailer can be seen above, and the (lovely) box art has been added to our gallery.

New features in the collection include customizable controls, art gallery functionality (which displays art on the bottom screen and the game on the top screen, so you can look while you play), and a new "Easy Scenario" mode to help new players get through these difficult games.

3D gaming is getting buzz with the Nintendo 3DS on the horizon and Sony’s recent firmware update. But, do gamers really want it?

The CEA, you know the company that produces the Consumer Electronics Show, conducted a study on the interest of 3D gaming and announced the results at the LA Games Conference.

    Here’s what they found out.

1 in 4 interested in home 3D video game experience.

1 in 2 people who saw a 3D movie in the last 12 months are interested in playing 3D games at home.

1 in 5 say playing video games in 3D would be their primary reason for buying a 3DTV.

Within twelve months, Nintendo will release the Nintendo 3DS, a handheld with a 3D screen that doesn’t require glasses. Sony is preparing 3D versions of games like Motorstorm 2 (pictured), Super Stardust HD, and Gran Turismo 5. Microsoft has not announced any plans for 3D gaming so far.

Gijs] cracked open his Game Boy and added some parts to give him more sound synthesis control. He uses Little Sound Dj (LSDj), a popular Game Boy program used to pump out those classic 8-bit sounds. The unit seen above and heard in the clip after the break has an added potentiometer and circuit board. He’s got a few other hacked Game Boys on his site as well, including an Arduino generating random music on the handheld.
