PunMaster has released new info on FiSSION:

FiSSION is a homebrew 3D game engine being developed for the Nintendo Wii. Its goal is to allow homebrew developers the opportunity to develop studio-quality games without the massive upfront investment of writing a game engine to support their content.

FiSSION originally started out as “Hydra,” a project with similar goals but targeted at XNA on the Xbox 360, a little over a year ago. It was a two-person endeavor shared between myself and a like-minded friend, and we made a lot of progress in the first few months of development. Unfortunately, my friend eventually lost interest, and lack of any good project management system made it almost impossible for me to continue the project on my own. Then, after becoming interested in the Wii, and some encouragement from another friend, I decided to pick the idea back up, this time incarnated as project “FiSSION.” Although I am now coding it mainly on my own, I must give my friend some credit for keeping me motivated. It has since been only a few months, and, despite some trouble working with the Wii’s poorly documented software, the project is progressing at a surprisingly fast pace. With that said, I am proud to announce this first public demo release, which, if nothing else, at least proves that I have made my way into the Wii game development scene. All in all, I am really hoping for this project to turn into something relatively extraordinary, especially given that no console has really seen something like this before.

Some other developers have kindly asked me to mention that while I believe FiSSION is destined to be the first of its kind, there still are other projects out there for the Wii and other consoles with similar goals. Likewise, I excitedly encourage everyone in the Wii development scene to keep up the great work and share whatever you can to help others. If you have any questions about FiSSION, or anything you would like to share, I'd love to hear from you on the discussion page. Have fun.

    Update 6/16/2009
Well, It's been almost exactly two months since I released something related to FiSSION, so here's another mouth-watering screenshot of 0xIDE, the game editor. This time it's complete with all-original content. Halo maps are finally gone for good. In the process of making the game editor, I have also developed a fairly robust system for game data management that should allow me to finally expand FiSSION from just a fancy model viewer to an actual game, with gravity, collision, weapons, and objectives. Just saying all that scares me a little, because it still sounds like such a daunting task. But I never thought I'd make it this far, so I'm confidant anything's possible.

Also, as you might suspect from the fairly developed-looking level open in the editor, there is also a real game for the FiSSION engine pretty far in development already. I've been completely silent about it up to this point, because I wasn't sure if it was really going anywhere. But it is starting to seem like a real possibility, so I thought I'd mention it. The game will be called "Sifer". It is a sci-fi shooter partially inspired by an anime called Denno Coil (if you have any interest in anime, I highly suggest looking into it). The game will be a single-player campaign with possible multiplayer support, depending on how things go. Because content creation is such a time consuming process, and it is unlikely I'd finish an entire game start-to-finish in a reasonable amount of time, I plan on releasing the game in a series of five episodes, each with about a half-hour of gameplay.

I won't give away much more than that right now, but as a little teaser, here are the titles for the five episodes I am planning.

    Stage 1: Quantum Chaos Connection
    Stage 2: The Neuron Exposition
    Stage 3: Null and Void
    Stage 4: Discontinuity
    Stage 5: Guardians in Exile

Okachobi has updated Paradroid to v0.5 :

A version of SDL Paradroid compiled for the Wii to fill the void in the U.S., where the virtual console lacks C64 games. This version is created from the GPL'ed source code from SDL Paradroid and uses the same data files. The source will be released in accordance with its original GPL license as soon as I get to a stable version. I had considered abandoning the project because of the virtual console version, but then realized its not available in the U.S., and noticed that there are at least 2 PC remakes of Paradroid and several for mobile platforms. So if you like Paradroid and live where it is available, support the virtual console by purchasing it. Otherwise, wait a little while and give this port a try.

This version is in no way derived from the version available on the Wii Virtual Console in Europe. All code and graphics are from the freely-available SDL Paradroid released in 2002 under the GPL license. It has simply been patched in various ways to be compatible with the Wii Homebrew SDL library.

    06/16/09 - v0.5 Released
Crashing due to the old SDL Port from Gamecube should be gone now
    Changes in v0.5
Lift teleport issue should be fixed
Now relatively stable with no crashes during testing thanks to a new version of SDL
Performance has improved considerably with the new SDL
The delay after configuring droids is now gone
Files now combined into 1 7-Zip file for easier setup
    Enjoy!

SEGA of America, Inc. and SEGA Europe Ltd. today announces they have shipped LET'S TAP to retailers in North America and has also made LET'S CATCH; Yuji Naka's second title from his Prope studio available for download from the Nintendo Channel store. Blazing new ground in Nintendo Wii control design, LET'S TAP allows players to simply tap their fingers to hours of fun. LET'S CATCH brings the time-honored game of catch indoors along with creative new twists on the Nintendo Wii. Developed by Prope, the studio that Sonic the Hedgehog creator Yuji Naka established in 2006, LET'S TAP and LET'S CATCH are the first two products from the new studio to launch in North America.

Developed exclusively for Nintendo's Wii system, LET'S TAP utilizes a ground-breaking control scheme where the Wii remote is placed on a box or flat surface so that it can detect minute vibrations. Players of all ages and skill levels then tap the box or flat surface to interact with the game; there's no need to hold the controller. LET'S TAP presents an assortment of different finger-tapping challenges for players to master. In Tap Runner players use differing finger tapping pressure to make simple stick figure racers run through an obstacle course. In Visualizer players are allowed to create dazzling fireworks effects, dramatic paint strokes, amongst other effect as they tap out different rhythm patterns that correspond to different effects. Silent Blocks finds players taking turns removing blocks from a large stack, tapping too hard will result in a collapsing stack of blocks. Bubble Voyager allows players to fly through space, blasting obstacles and enemies in order to reach the far stretches of the universe. And finally Rhythm Tap allows players to time the taps of their fingers to high energy music.

In LET'S CATCH players will experience a new twist on the game of catch in six different single and multiplayer modes to play. Excelling through good timing and hand-eye coordination, players will find themselves playing games that range from having players pass a bomb to other players before it explodes, test players' ability to catch a fast ball, challenge players' throwing accuracy and more.

"We're excited to bring these two titles from Prope to gamers in North America," says Sean Ratcliffe, VP of Marketing at SEGA of America. "The Wii platform has been a gateway to innovative game development and these two titles present gameplay mechanics that are truly one of a kind."

LET'S TAP and LET'S CATCH were developed at Prope Tokyo. For more information on both titles please visit www.SEGA.com/Letstap or http://segapr.segaamerica.com ...

While Sony and Microsoft both have movie download services here in America, over in Japan, the three hardware makers have yet to get anything similar started. Until now, that is. Fuji Soft announced today that it will kick off a movie download service tomorrow (June 17) for the Wii.

The Fuji Soft service is actually just a section of its current "Minna no Theater Wii" (Everyone's Theater Wii) video viewing service. Available since January, the service has offered digital rentals of mostly anime episodes.

Tomorrow, the service's movie section will take its first feature length movies. Fuji Soft has signed a deal with Cinema Now to bring major Hollywood productions to the service. Thirty-four Western movies will be available initially, including such offerings as Mission Impossible, Eagle Eye and Breakfast at Tiffany's. Fuji Soft plans to continually add to the lineup.

The movie channel will also see Japanese and Korean films. Fuji Soft says that a total of 250 titles are due to be made available gradually.

Despite the new feature-length offerings, the rental process appears to be unchanged. To use Minna no Theater Wii, Wii owners must download a 500 WiiPoint viewing app, which takes the form of a WiiWare title. This is used to browse the growing catalog of titles and stream video footage at DVD quality. Video viewing fees start at 300 WiiPoints for a two day viewing period.

Do you think you'd make use of something like this on Wii if someone brought out an American version? Let us know in the comments section. And be sure and state how much you'd be willing to pay for a rental.
