Black Bean Games has told Eurogamer that Superstars V8 Racing will be out on 26th June, costing GBP 30 for PS3/360 and GBP 20 for PC. There's also a demo planned for June.

The first official screenshots were released last week, accompanying the scraps of information offered so far. This is often a worrying sign so close to launch.

"You are absolutely right, this does have the hallmarks of something worrying," a spokesperson for Black Bean games retorted. "It is, however, simply a case of this being the first game in a franchise from a smaller publisher known for bike racing, and we wanted to ensure we released quality assets we could honestly say were from the title."

Fabio Paglianti, senior producer for developer Milestone, added: "The game has very high quality, but the licence is not so famous. So we start with a mid-price so we can show to the audience we can do a very good game, a very beautiful game, to play, to see, to watch, with a good price. Because a mid-price game with that graphics, that content is a very good game for the audience."

Paglianti said Superstars V8 has around 80 per cent of the content of a full-price title like SBK, the motorbike racing series Milestone is noted for - although the studio's racing heritage goes right back to 1995 and Screamer on PC.

Superstars V8 will be a friendly simulation racer, according to senior producer Fabio Paglianti, that will be "easy to start" and feature racing aids that can be turned on and off. One of the special features is an Orbit mode, where races can be paused and a camera flown freely around to assess positioning.

The game is based on the real-life Superstars V8 championship, where well-known racers show what road cars are capable of around a track, a bit like Top Gear but less hairy, fat and obnoxious. "The hook for the audience is to see their own car [in action]," explained Paglianti.

Superstars V8 Racing has quick-race online multiplayer for up-to 12 players, who can be substituted for bots if needs be. This is Paglianti's favourite part of the game. "It's really, really fun," he said, "it's easy to play, it's aggressive."

The AI will be no push-over, either. "The AI have the same behaviour as the human," explained Paglianti, pointing out that different drivers have different skills as well as different cars.

"It's a very good game, but we have absolute faith that in the future we can improve Superstar a lot," said Paglianti, who would like a bigger championship mode and a racing school mode in the future.

He also said the real-life Superstars V8 event "can become a very interesting championship for the audience", and he hopes the game - via annual releases - can grow with it.

That's the benefit of a licence like this, he argued, although he isn't allowed to smash cars up more than mildly, front and back, and has no customisation. So is a licence more important than creative freedom?

"I don't think the limits a licence can have are so high," said Paglianti. "In our view the licence is, every time, a very good opportunity to give to the players a branded game that he or she already knows. "

Majesco has announced that its Cooking Mama franchise has sold a combined 4 million units in the United States.

According to the publisher, combined sales of the five titles in the Cooking Mama franchise reached the 4 million milestone in less than three years, starting with the original Cooking Mama on the Nintendo DS.

"We are thrilled to reach this significant milestone," said Majesco CEO Jesse Sutton. "Majesco's number one franchise continues to resonate with gamers of all ages and genders."

Follow-up titles to the original Cooking Mama, originally released September of 2006, include Cooking Mama: Cook Off and Cooking Mama World Kitchen for the Wii, and two additional DS titles, Cooking Mama 2: Dinner with Friends and Gardening Mama. Each of these games was developed by Cooking Mama Limited, originally known as Office Create prior to the series' success.

The franchise generated 1.6 million sales as of January 2008, a number that has more than doubled since that time.

"We will continue to explore ways to expand the Mama brand with innovative and compelling products that offer new entertainment experiences," said Sutton.

Ahead of the NPD Group's official sales figures, EEDAR and Wedbush Morgan analysts are predicting a 17 per cent software sales decline in the US for April.

EEDAR's Jesse Divinch is predicting US software sales for the month to reach approximately USD 548 million, a decrease it attributes to an overall weak retail environment and a software release schedule that is not as strong as that of last year.

"We believe that April's low sales are mostly the result of a weaker release schedule and it is not likely an indication that the industry is contracting," said Divinch.

"If April sales exceed USD 550 million, we believe it is a positive sign for the industry and an indication that sales may remain robust for the rest of the calendar year," he continued. "Sales below USD 510 million would be an indication that consumer spending in the video game sector is beginning to contract over last year and could impact sales in the summer months."

The firm also anticipates hardware sales to increase 10 per cent, driven by the Nintendo DSi. It also believes the Xbox 360 will show "mild growth," while the remaining consoles will show a sales decline.

Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter concurs with EEDAR's figures, adding that "We continue to believe that the videogame software sector remains highly recession-resistant, but expect more modest gains in 2009 due to a weak start and continuing difficult year-over-year comparisons."

April of 2008 saw two titles - Grand Theft Auto IV and Mario Kart Wii - reach sales of 1 million units. Neither firm is predicting a million-seller for April 2009, though Divinch is predicting that 21 titles will sell over 100,000 units, compared to 11 titles in the previous year.

An anonymous reader tips news that Eidos Montreal has confirmed recent speculation by announcing the development of a new Thief game. They've set up a website, but the project is still in its early stages, and details are scarce. In an interview with IncGamers, Eidos' Stéphane D'Astous said, "We're keeping our ear very close to the ground. As you may have noticed, we now have a forum up and running for Thief 4, and I said to my guys 'I really want to have a forum at the very early stages,' because I want people to have a medium with which they can express their wishes, their expectations, and what they would like and not like to happen with the next Thief. Obviously we've started work, but it's always very important for the developers to be close to the community. We're listening to these people because they are very hardcore fans, and we want to bring the Thief 4 franchise to a new level, so the challenges are huge!"

Content publishing tool being used by band to promote its new album.

The Crystal Method has released an iPhone application that offers content from the band and its new album Divided By Night.

The free app, built using Fluidesign's Mobile Roadie platform, enables fans to purchase the album's first single, Drown in the Now, album graphics, buy upcoming show tickets, and interact with both other fans and the band.

Physical and digital distribution, as well as digital marketing of the album, will be handled by INgrooves.

Robb McDaniels at INgrooves said: "The iPhone app is a great way for Crystal Method fans to connect directly with the band and gain fast, easy access to their exclusive content. This is an example of how to reduce the friction between fan and artist and facilitate a more intimate relationship."

New research from Harris Interactive has found that 23 percent of UK households have a games console under the telly.

Harris polled over 2,000 UK home owners about console ownership before Christmas and then again post Xmas, during which time Wii ownership had jumped five percent, helping boost the already high console adoption figures.

"It seems that the investment in home entertainment will mean people saving money by staying in, and preparing for some tough months ahead," Harris Interactive's research director, Steve Evans, told MCV.

Nintendo console one of the most popular items on couples’ wedding lists at John Lewis
John Lewis has revealed the Wii is now one of the top 20 most popular items to appear on couple’s wedding lists.
The Telegraph reports the Nintendo console joins other tech gifts, such as an iPod or flat-screen television, and traditional items such as crockery and cooking equipment.
John Lewis’ senior Gift List analyst Tracey Yates said: “Two years ago, the top 20 products on the Gift List were exclusively traditional items from linens, kitchenware, china and glass but, in the second half of last year, the Wii made it to the Top 20.”
Similar trends can be seen at other retailers. Debenhams has stated that the most requested gifts on wedding lists are iPods and TVs, as well as cash or vouchers.

A new version of Baseball Superstars 2009 for the iPhone and iPod Touch will include in-game Coke-branded stadium advertisements.
South Korea-based publisher Gamevil agreed the deal with The Coca-Cola Company earlier this year for its local market, where cans of the drink will promote its games.
Gamevil says the deal for iPhone is the first step towards extending the relationship globally - the Baseball Supertars franchise has sold a cumulative nine million units to date.

Young Soo Choi, Senior Manager of New Business and Alliances at Gamevil, said: "The relationship with Coca-Cola has been phenomenal. We are extremely pleased with the strategic relationship in Korea so far, and wanted to further expand it worldwide.
"The in-game advertisement on Baseball Superstars 2009 is just a small beginning of the collaboration between the two parties.”
