Media Molecule's LittleBigPlanet has collected eight awards at the 12th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards, held in Las Vegas.

The user-generated platformer was awarded game of the year, console game of the year and family game of the year, as well picking up gongs for its game direction, art direction, visual engineering and innovation. In addition, the game's main character, Sackboy, won the award for outstanding character.

The event also honoured Bruce Shelley, co-founder of Ensemble Studios, for his contributions to the videogame industry. The award was presented to him by Ensemble's other co-founder, Tony Goodman.

"The Interactive Achievement Awards is the forum for the industry's leading game makers to honour the best in technical innovation and game play experience," said Joseph Olin, president, AIAS.

"This year's winners represent the range of interactive entertainment experiences and truly exemplify why videogames enjoy so much popularity among adults and children. It's no wonder that IFC TV, one of the best-known outlets for creative entertainment, is excited to bring the Interactive Achievement Awards to their audience this spring."

Left 4 Dead and Fallout 3 were the next best performers, both of which picked up two awards. Valve's zombie co-operative shooter was named the best computer game of the year and best for online gameplay, and Bethesda's open world post-apocalyptic title was named best RPG and best original story.

Microsoft has announced that it is working on a solution to fix the expired email problem that's been preventing users from renewing their Gold membership to Xbox Live.

In a statement issued by Major Nelson, in response to the story broken by GamesIndustry.biz earlier this week, it has emerged that a gamer's achievement points can be recovered from an expired account, as long as they still remain on the Xbox 360's hard drive.

Previous advice from Microsoft customer support had recommended that the only solution to the issue was for a user to start afresh with a new Gamertag, explaining that achievements and friends lists weren't transferable.

But now the corporation is working on a solution that will enable users to link their Gamertags to new Windows Live IDs should their existing one become dormant through inactivity, meaning users will therefore not need to set up a new Gamertag.

The full message from Major Nelson is reprinted below:

    "Windows Live IDs and Gamertags

I want to take a moment to talk about Windows LIVE IDs and Gamertags. Recently, there have been a few stories about Gamertags becoming unrecoverable. I want to set the record straight, and let you know what is going on, and what we're doing about it.

    What happens:

In the rare case that you DO NOT sign in to Xbox.com or another website that uses Windows LIVE ID (like Hotmail) it is possible that your Windows LIVE ID expires (goes dormant.)

An Xbox LIVE Gamertag is unrecoverable from the system only when the associated Windows Live ID has become dormant and the Gamertag has been deleted from all Xbox 360 consoles.

Members with dormant Windows Live IDs can continue to enjoy the benefits of their Xbox LIVE Gamertags on their Xbox 360 consoles, including earning Achievements; however, they will not be able to use their expired Windows Live IDs for activities such as account management on Xbox.com.

It is important to note that an Xbox LIVE Gamertag is unrecoverable from the system only when the associated Windows Live ID has become dormant and the Gamertag has been deleted from all Xbox 360 consoles.

What you can do to prevent having any problems:

We recommend that people log into their Windows Live ID on Xbox.com or Xbox LIVE Marketplace on the Web at least once every four months.

    What we're doing:

We are actively working on an update that will allow you to link your Gamertag to a new Windows Live ID if one becomes dormant.

If anyone should have an issue regarding their Xbox 360 or Xbox LIVE account should visit xbox.com/support so we can assist you."

HMV's senior games buyer, Toby Burton, has welcomed the announcement of the DSi's April release date, saying "it couldn't have come at a better time for us."

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Burton said that the retailer expects a large footfall during the Easter period and the DSi had already brought in "substantial pre-orders", as the retailer ramps up operations to prepare for escalating demand over the weekend.

"Great news from Nintendo," Burton said. "HMV has a massive footfall over the Easter period so this couldn't have come at a better time for us."

"We're all really excited about what we can do with this product in store and are working closely with Nintendo on some great launch day plans. The price will sit very well with consumers, and we'll be communicating the key benefits of the DSi to our customers to reinforce the excellent value of this product."

He explained that consumer demand was already present for the new handheld, and that it was set to expand over the weekend as news of the release date and price spread.

"Interest has been massive, and we're already taking substantial pre-orders in store and through our website," he revealed.

"As product awareness increases over the weekend we have everything needed in store to engage consumer interest and get the pre-orders ringing through the tills."

While Nintendo still plans to sell the DS alongside the newer DSi, Burton says there is a clear market for both models.

"I think the price difference is enough to really give the consumer two clear options when deciding on purchasing a console," he said, adding: "and those that want the core gaming experience but are worried about spending too much money will still come out and pick up the DS Lite as it represents excellent value for money."

"The DSi will instantly appeal to gamers and those looking to upgrade, and I think the excellent new features will really justify to consumers who are buying a DS for the first time that the DSi is well worth the money."

dmit it, you want some Cupcake, but you're afraid of ditching the physical keyboard altogether. Good news for those of you who've snagged an Android Dev Phone 1, because your wish may be our command. The guys at Make have the lowdown on how to flash Cupcake to the device and experience that on-screen keyboard in all its glory. The hacked OS certainly wasn't ready for primetime, and that hotly-anticipated soft keyboard was still a little buggy -- but there is some hope for using the phone with one hand. We'll bet Google / T-Mobile keep this one in the oven a bit longer until it's ready to take on the masses, but at least we're seeing some fresh baked goodness on something other than the Magic. There's video of the Macguyver'd OS in action after the break.

Details are slowly (but surely) starting to trickle in about the totally American flavor of Nintendo's DSi, and while you've already got a release date and price to mull over, how's about a video tour to show you what exactly you'll be getting come April 5th? The vid does a decent job of showing off those dual cameras and the slick new design, but most of all, it shows just how incredibly awesome your life will be upon actually holding one in your hands. Seriously, everything will change.
