Flight sticks may not be quite as common as they were during the heyday of PC flight sims, but there's still quite a few would-be Chuck Yeagers out there, and Mad Catz is doing its best to cater to them with its new pair of Saitek Aviator sticks for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. From the looks of it, these are mostly identical to the existing Aviator PC flight stick, with the notable exception of the requisite console-specific buttons, and a slightly spiffed-up appearance. As a bonus, each of these will also double as a PC joystick although, naturally, you won't be able to swap 'em between a 360 and a PS3. Look for both to hit all the usual shops later this month for $50 apiece.

It will likely be looked back on as the golden peak year of this console cycle - during 2008 sales of consoles, games and peripherals grew strongly in the UK. The total value of all three sectors was just over £4 billion, up a massive 23 percent year-on-year.

Of course, it makes sense if you think about the boom sales of consoles such as Wii, price cuts to Xbox 360 and Sony starting to build its marketing momentum for PlayStation 3.

Things weren't so rosy for PSP however, which performed only just a little bit better than the fast collapsing PC games market.

A total of 4.1 million PSP games were sold in 2008, compared to 5.6 million during 2007; a decline of 27 per cent. Indeed, the value of those sales dropped slightly more, from £111 million in 2007 to £70 million in 2008; down a rather staggering 36 per cent.

It all suggests Sony has now lost the battle to encourage thirdparty publishers to bring their big licenses and franchises to PSP.

Apart from EA's rescheduled Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Square Enix's Star Ocean: Second Evolution and Capcom's Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, the console's line of 'big' games is currently looking remarkably bare. (Although we do have top Sony product in the shape of Patapon 2 and Resistance: Retribution to look forward to.)

The high price of the UMD format is certainly one reason for this lack of enthusiasm. Maybe it's time to open up the PlayStation Store to developers in the manner that's been so refreshing to see with Apple's App Store for iPod touch and iPhone?

There's no such soul searching for Nintendo though with DS accounting for 19 per cent of total UK game sales, the third largest after Wii and Xbox 360.

A total of 19.1 million DS games were sold in 2008, up 28 per cent on 2007's total. In terms of revenue, in 2008 the DS software market was worth £366 million, up 17 per cent compared to 2007.

This does mean that the average price of a DS game dropped 9 per cent from £21.07 to £19.16 though; something that will have publishers' accountants double-checking their development and marketing budgets for DS games during 2009. A lower average price obviously means less income for them.

    News/release from Cpasjuste

    CUSTOM FIRMWARE EXTENDER 3.1

Custom Firmware Extender (aka cfe) is a set of plugins that will add some extra options to your SONY PSP.

With Custom Firmware Extender you should be able to :

    - Change the speed of the PSP CPU/FSB while under the VSH (PSP Menu) or in-game (Umd/Iso/Homebrews) from the cfe menu or with a quick combo key.

    - Change the brightness of the PSP while under the VSH or in-game from the cfe menu or with a quick combo key.

    - Take some screenshot while under the VSH or in-game from the cfe menu or with a quick combo key.

    - Load some PRX plugins while under the VSH or in-game from the cfe menu. Note that on slim PSP, they are loaded in the extra slim memory, so you should be able to load more plugins than you usally can.

    - Start and stop USB under the VSH or in-game from the cfe menu.

    - Play your Umd/Iso/Homebrews on your PC screen and make some in-game videos with the help of remotejoyLite from Akind, based on Tyranid work.

    - Stream/play Iso/Homebrews hosted on your computer via USB (based on HostCore by Poison).

    - Reset and Power off the PSP while under the VSH or in-game.

    - Listen custom music (mp3, at3, oma, omg and aa3) while under the VSH or in-game, based on music.prx by joek2100. Note that if you have some subfolders under an album folder, files won't be found for now.

    - "Time Machine" feature, you can reboot to any TM compatible firmwares, they are automatically detected by cfe 3.0. Note that you must configure each TM firmware to load CFE under the VSH to be able to easly reboot to your original firmware. There is already a sample configuration under the TM folder in this archive. If you encounter some problem's to go back to your original firmware, connect to your PSP via USB, go to the "TM" folder and replace "config.txt" with "config.txt.back" to restore your original configuration.

    - Change/mute volume of each music channel's of the psp.

    - Grab some informations about the PSP memory (Usefull to know how much space a prx plugin require) and battery.

    - Set a default CPU/BUS speed at startup.

    - Set a default brightness level at startup.

    - Configure all the buttons/settings from the cfe menu.

    Changes in 3.1

    - Removed the USB autostart feature since the 5.00 fw include a similar function.

    - Fixed a bug that prevented the auto-sleep and backlight auto-off features to work.

    - Combo button's are back (change the cpu/brightness, take screenshots with a quick combo key).

    - Fully configurable via the menu, changes can be saved. Note that there is now a different configuration file for game and vsh modes.

    - Usb streaming recoded, based on the great work of Poison (hostcore). PC hard drive is redirected to the PSP, alowing streaming of homebrews, music, videos, and isos in any mode (sony, m33, umd..). Just select "Remap usb to ms" in the menu then browse your games like you usally do.

    - Music player improved, can now be completly stopped from the menu, and/or properly restarted with another music directory source.

    - PSP phat compatibility added, but in-game music player is removed for now (not tested).

    - Gui colors configurable via the configuration files ("game.cfg" and "vsh.cfg") in ABGR hex format.

    - Added the possibility to prevent the plugin to be loaded (hold L trigger) while starting a game, or load the light version of cfe (hold R trigger) so extra slim memory is not used, preventing some plugins (pspstates) to not work.

    Installation

    - Copy the content of the "seplugins" folder to the seplugins folder of your memory stick.

    - Take a look at the file "game.cfg" and "vsh.cfg" files under "ms0:/seplugins/cfe" and adjust to your needs.

    - Enable cfe_loader.prx under the m33 recovery menu (Hold R while starting the PSP) in vsh and game. (you may need to activate it under pops to make it work on FAT PSP, strange bug).

    - Set cpu speed to default under the m33 recovery menu.

    Usage

    - Press NOTE + R to load the cfe menu (default configuration).

    - You can DISABLE the cfe plugin by holding the L trigger button while starting the psp or a game if needed.

    - On slim PSP, you can load the light version of cfe by holding R trigger button while starting the psp or a game so extra slim memory is not used. This can prevent some plugins (pspstates) to not work.

Alek of Dark Alex fame posted this:

    Well, things are simple.

When you make a false statement and announce it globally with a little risk of failing, you definitely fail with epic circumstances that make you look even worse to all the community. Yeah, we're talking about a blue thing, and it's not the sky.

We have seen D@tel using things that are not from their own, leaking indirectly stuff, and in general making things around here a little bit... confusing.

Some webpages announced a blue battery, saying that it will "downgrade your PSP and pretty much do what you want with it!" WHOA, the scene was a party. But well, hold on a second, it just had a LED indicator ON... Oh wait, didn't that made also DC7?

Sometime later, some engineering test units came onto play... and whoa! it didn't work! WTF! Every single one on the PSP Scene started shouting and sending mails to D@tel to refund or even to try to find if this information was right.

Well, meanwhile i was making some stuff for the server, a good friend, x3sphere (thanks!), gave me this link. WUT PSP MAX POWER DIGITAL! Wasn't it called something like... Lite Blue Tool or whatever? something like an Universal Unbricker, something like the "working PSP 3000 solution"?

And now you see it totally changed, new name, new box, and a big thing that says "Use to put a PSP2000 into service mode or work as a normal battery on PSP2000 and the brand new PSP3000" OH SNAP, all that i always wanted, a second battery for my PSP3000! Uh, wait, it wasn't that, i wanted that cool blue thing that could allow me to cfw'd my PSP3000!

Well, let's get serious. What do we learn from all this story? From my sincere point of view, two things: First, do NEVER post/announce globally something if you don't know if it's gonna work or even if you... depend of something or someone else . And the second idea, and this goes for every single PSP user, patience is a great virtue. You have seen some advances on this model some days ago, so ask yourself: What's better, asking every single forum/webpage for when something is gonna be released, or just wait and see how things are going?

Meanwhile, buy the games you like, game developers do also eat!

Hm seems the relationship between Datel and Maxconsole and the hype surrounding this Blue battery of Datels has been uncovered by many of the PSP/PS3 Scenes best hackers, heres StreetskaterFU and his take on it:

Do you remember Datel's big announcement regarding the blue battery on PSP 3000?

    I'll help you a bit with a maxconsole.net quote:

MaxConsole can exclusively reveal that the brand new PSP 3000 model is now perfectly hackable thanks to Datel's newest tool battery that will put the PSP 3000 into service mode. Once you're in service mode, you can downgrade your PSP and pretty much do what you want with it!

Many people believed this, others were curios from start as the sceners.org author Alek describes very good:

Datel Action Replay does uses code that isn't from itself, code that isn't distributed to be used the way they use it anyway. The code involving this terms is, for first instance, the Pandora forged IPL block, and on second place but of course not less important, Booster's IPL SDK.

Well, like this wouldn't be bad enough for now, actually you read even more worse stuff on Datel's web presence:

Re-engineered specifically for the slimmer 2000 and new 3000 model of the Sony PSP, the MAX Power Digital - Universal Mode Battery lets you enable Service Mode on the PSP 2000 and also works as a normal battery on the new PSP3000 (also known as the BRITE).

As you can read, PSP 3000 support for the suspicous service mode just disappeared in Datel's new "blue battery". So you actually can buy a second battery for your PSP 3000 in a nice blue colour without any special PSP 3k feature. Cooool.

Im sure i remember a site that had a massive campaign against the original datel battery release then they hype them :P, who says the psp scene is dull ....lol ...

    - Gearbox Software has revealed that Aliens: Colonial Marines, its highly-anticipated shooter, is on track for a first quarter 2009 release. This word comes roughly a month and a half after Gearbox president Randy Pitchford denied the rumor that the game had been cancelled.

Regarding the game's reported "halted" development, "Aliens isn't canned," Pitchford said back in November. Late last year, Gearbox laid off several employees. Some news publications estimated that 15 to 25 employees were let go. Gearbox's most notable, recent release was Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway. The WWII shooter was met with lower-than-expected sales.

According to videogamer.com, even though Gearbox confirmed a Q1 2009 release period, the company is not ready to announce the exact release date for Aliens: Colonial Marines.
