'CryEngine 3 runs beautifully on the Wii U', says Cevat Yerli

Nintendo’s upcoming next-gen console the Wii U is at minimum as powerful as the Xbox 360, Crytek’s CEO has claimed.
Speaking to CVG, Cevat Yerli said that whilst the developer was currently not creating content for the platform, a “respected developer” was at work on a CryEngine 3-powered Wii U title.

He also said that despite Crytek not currently making its own titles for the platform, its engine “runs beautifully” on the system.
"From my perspective I do not understand the public's concerns that the Wii U is weaker than PS3 and 360," he said.
"That I cannot see. From my perspective the Wii U is minimum as powerful as Xbox 360.

Epic games design director points to drawbacks of accessibility

The current generation of games has focused its attention on widening their appeal at the expense of challenge and freedom, says Cliff Blezinski.
Speaking to X360A, Epic's games design director highligted the dangers of this attitude, and expressed his hopes to avoid these pitfalls in the upcoming Gears of War prequel.

“It feels like in this current console generation that we’ve taken a lot of steps to grow the audience and what I think’s happened is that the games have become more linear and easier, so it feels like a lot of quick-time-events,” said Bleszinski.
“The more I play games like that the more I turned off to them and just want to get back to systems interacting with systems, and get back to a game that, you know, when was the last time a game really challenged you and asked something of you, right? There’s a reason why Demon Souls and Dark Souls have taken off lately. It’s because they really require you actually try.”
Blezinski's comments come as the industry revs its engines for a run at poll position in the social and casual markets.

A new report claims that National Security Agency, the CIA and Israeli all worked together to develop the Flame malware, with the aim of collecting information about Iran’s nuclear program.
Citing unnamed Western officials, the Washington Post has reported that the collection of intelligence was in preparation for cyber-sabotage, aimed at slowing Iran’s ability to develop a nuclear weapon.
The apparent joint effort was codenamed ‘Olympic Games’, which Kaspersky Lab reported contained a chunk of code found in an early version of Stuxnet.
Disguising itself as a Windows software update, Flame turned an infected computer into a sophisticated spying device, sending data from hard drives, computer microphones, webcams and nearby Bluetooth-enabled devices.
Spokesmen for the CIA, the NSA and the office of the director of National Intelligence, as well as the Israeli Embassy in Washington, have all declined to comment so far.

Google Maps users will soon be able to plan a trip through the waterways of England and Wales.
Teaming up with the Canal and River Trust, the US search engine will be adding around 2,000 miles of canal and river paths to its mapping application.
"Canal towpaths offer green routes through our towns and cities, and by working with the Canal and River Trust we're adding towpaths to Google Maps and encouraging people to discover their local waterway," commented Google UK’s geospatial technologist Ed Parsons.
Earlier this month, Google unveiled new additions to its mapping technology, which includes fly-over views and 3D rendering. Just a week later Apple announced that its latest mobile operating system, iOS 6, would no longer run Google Maps. Instead Apple has developed its own mapping app.

It's rumoured to have a bendy display. But can it turn the heads of iPhone users?
Samsung has only just released its flagship Galaxy S III device, butMK Business News reckons a Galaxy Note II 'phablet' is due in October.
That is, of course, the same month that long-standing rival Apple released its iPhone 4S in last year – and that many expect an iPhone 5 to make its debut.
The new Note is set to sport a flexible unbreakable plane (UBP) display, with advanced speeds and multi-tasking functions supported by a quad-core processor.
The current Note boasts a 5.3-inch screen, and Samsung is expected to play to its strengths by designing an even larger screen for its successor.
It's also set to come with a longer battery life and shock-resistant durability, with power generated by Jelly Bean, the next in line to the Android OS throne, following on from Ice Cream Sandwich.

Many of you might have read about a purported internal Microsoft strategy document that apparently "leaked" earlier this week, outlining its plans for the next Xbox system. The 56-page-long screed, dated August 2010, presciently mentioned Xbox SmartGlass, as well as Blu-ray support, 3D glasses, a focus on cloud-based gaming and a newly-improved Kinect system. Some news outlets ran the story, while others cried "fake!" claiming it didn't fit with Microsoft's traditional internal communications style and that some of the technical details within were borderline preposterous.Head on over to The Verge's report and you can attempt to make your own mind up.We held back and reached out to Microsoft for comment on the document's veracity a few days ago. Finally, a response has come through. A spokesperson for the platform holder wouldn't confirm or deny whether the document is legitimate but did offer us the following statement:"We understand there is great interest and anticipation for what comes next for Xbox and we are lucky to have customers who are so passionate about the platform."Today, there has never been a better time to own an Xbox 360 console. We have found new ways to extend the console lifecycle by introducing controller-free experiences with Kinect and we've re-invented the console with a new dashboard and new entertainment content partnerships."We are continually thinking about the future of the platform and when we have something to share, we will."

Nintendo of America VP of sales and marketing Scott Moffitt has spoken out again on the challenges Nintendo faces portraying the Wii U's unique appeal.
"There were two things we realized going into E3: one, that we had too much content and info to share in one press event; second, we know that Wii U is a more complicated story and it takes some explaining to do to have consumers fully embrace it," Moffitt told Gamespot."It's confusing relative to the Wi," he added. "With motion control gaming, when you saw Mr. Iwata and Reggie stand up and swing a motion controller, it brought it to life immediately. With a second screen controller, you need to see what's on the second screen, so by nature it's a more complex system. It's less visually easy to understand.
"As for how we're planning to make it clear that it's a new system: well, we want to get it in people's hands. That's what E3 is all about and from now until launch. We want consumers to experience it for themselves, whether it's in a store, at a gaming event, or at a press event. Once they do that, I think people will really start to understand how the GamePad changes the way you can connect with games and other players."
This reflects recent statements from Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata, who admitted that, "On the stage [at E3] we couldn't fully explain what's so unique about our product

If one of the aims of the Raspberry Pi was to embody the "do-it-yourself" ethos, then it's already succeeded. Annoyed at the wait for the education-friendly board to arrive, the anonymous creator of the Gooseberry decided to build their own. Looking reasonably similar to its inspiration, it's packing a 1GHzAllWinner CPU, 400MHz Mali GPU, 512MB RAM and 4GB of onboard storage. It'll go on sale in the UK for £40 ($63) shortly, running Gingerbread and is capable of running HD video -- as demonstrated by the video we've got for you after the break.
