As a master of the occult, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has access to an astonishing amount of prescient items. He typically rotates them, most recently speaking to the mirror which he got from an estate sale from a Queen who apparently took a nasty fall. Pachter went up to the mirror and asked, "Mirror, mirror, on the wall. In July, who's the console winner of them all?"

The Mirror replied, "Why the Nintendo Wii and DS, of course."

Miffed at the information given by his impulse purchase, Pachter replies, "You better tell me something I don't already know or I'm shipping you by freight to Pidgeon!"

In a moment of sheer panic the Mirror blurts out, "NPD will report the PS3 beat the Xbox 360 in sales for July."

Pachter believes that for the month of July, which will be official from NPD on Aug. 23, that the DS (450,000 units) and Wii (330,000) dominated sales in North America. Although, for the first time ever, the PS3 will show sales of 160,000 units, while the Xbox 360 will have 115,000. This would also mean that the PS3 will have doubled sales since announcing their 60GB clearance sale last month. He goes on to say that the Xbox warranty issue was a speed bump for Microsoft as "as consumers struggled with the meaning of the 'three red rings of death' issue." He believes that the price cut and apparent fix of the design flaw will rebound Xbox 360 sales. ...

Calcprogrammer1 has updated his file browser application, heres whats new:

DSFile2 is out! Features are Dual Slot Copying, Pasting, and Deleting, soon to be Renaming if Wintermute and Chishm get DevKitARM working with rename(). I've redone the interface to fully use two screens, but the keyboard does nothing as of now. It's implemented but commented out because Renaming doesn't work yet.

    DSFile2:
New interface, beginnings of renaming, and sourcecode sorted out so it's not so hard to edit.

    News/release from Stravingo:

Hi everybody! I am developping a new cartographic engine for DS Weather Report that will allow you to see the weather for the whole world, and not only Europe. Now, I release a first version of this engine in my new project, Treasures of Gaia, available on my devblog.

Treasures of Gaia allows you to browse on your DS an extremely detailed map of the entire world thanks to Google Maps (a Wifi connection is mandatory). The whole world is now in your DS! You can scroll the map with the pad or the stylus. Use the L/R buttons for zooming in and out. Up to twenty zoom levels are available, depending on the area.

The purpose of Treasures of Gaia is to let you appreciate the beauty of our world You can freely travel where you want, but special locations are also provided: the 851 places inscribed by the UNESCO on the World Heritage List for their outstanding universal value to humanity. These places are indicated on the map, but are only shown at zoom levels greater than 5 for legibility. To obtain information about a place, you only have to touch its location with the stylus. The information are displayed on the upper screen, where you can switch between a picture of the place, a description, or its location on a global map.

You can also browse the whole list sorted by countries by pressing the Y button. When you click on a place in the list, the same information are displayed on the upper screen, and you can directly go to this location by touching the "Go!" button.

    Controls

    News/release from Tobin:

Quite a long time since the last release, but now there is version 0.3 of DSchess!
DSchess is a homebrew chess game for the Nintendo DS, which is based on the strong chess engine Fruit by Fabien Letouzey.

I have made some changes a year ago, but was too busy to actually release something. Last week I have grabbed my DS recorded some sounds with Nitrotracker and put it all together to version 0.3.
The last version had some problems on some devices, so I have made a compatibility table on my site. Please leave a reply if it works (or does not work) for you with a device and/or start method which isn't in the table.

The new version uses DLDI, but remember that this is only necessary for the bigger opening book and the new auto save feature.

nervegas has posted a new release of the Nes Emulator for the Iphone:

NES.app uses the popular InfoNES emulation core to mimic the 6502 processor in a Nintendo Entertainment System, allowing you to play ROM dumps of games designed for the NES console. ROM dumps are files containing the dumped instruction code from a physical cartridge. In many cases, you are legally entitled to posess a ROM dump of any game that you presently own. ROM images for NES are widely available online, or with the appropriate hardware, you can dump them yourself directly from the cartridge.

NES.app is based on the same original code as iPhoneNES, but has been all but rewritten to run super fast, and with many additional features such as sound and save-state. Because they couldn't keep up with all the changes, we thought it best to maintain our own site and svn repository.

0.51 [nervegas] Added "Enlarge Screen" option for portrait mode
    [nervegas] Aesthetic changes to preferences
0.52 [nervegas] Resync frameskip from preferences when loading saved game
[nervegas] Redraw controllers when debug toggled
[nervegas] Minor tweaks to portrait controller hot spots
0.53 [nervegas] Fixed orientation of notify icons when flipping
[nervegas] Added enlarged screen view option for landscape mode
0.54 [nervegas] Implemented game genie code support (but slows down game)
[nervegas] Fix for preferences scroll speed (cell scope problem)

kaisersoze has posted some great news and screenshots of his port of MAME to the Iphone:

Project to port SDL MAME to the iPhone. The main cool feature I want to add is configurable layouts for touchscreen controls and gesture based inputs. Whether MAME will actually be playable from a performance and control perspective remains to be seen.

UPDATE: As expected, performance is an issue. For example, Pacman and Q*bert run well, but Galaga and Gyruss are marginal. The SDL port was the quickest way to get everything up and running without having to delve into the guts of MAME. One option would be to switch to an older (and pre-SDL) version of MAME that may have less accurate emulation (and different associated ROM sets) which may also be faster but require a boatload of porting work. I wonder how easy it would be to try and pull out code from earlier versions of games that have marginal performance? I'll have to do some investigation. My old 700 MHz arcade cabinet machine is running just fine on some old Linux svgalib version of AdvanceMAME from like 3 or 4 years ago (hey if it ain't broke don't fix it so that might be a good the place to start. If I go that route, you may have to use older ROM sets (which we all legally obtained, of course, cough, cough).

    Progress report
    Full MAME is built!

Now I gotta figure out how in the heck to actually control the darn thing! I think I'll redo all the menus with native iPhone widgets, not only will it look better but the existing menu interface is all keyboard based anyway, and it would probably be just as much work to add mouse/pointer support to it.

I had to stub out a couple of files as they wouldn't compile, and I had to just manually slap all the .o files directly to the linker as it doesn't seem to want to link against all the code in the .a archive libraries.

    Wesker posted this news :

Finally it has happened. ElSemi is carrying its emulator of CPS3 for Windows to Xbox. At the moment it does not have it release public and it will take a little in arriving… but I have had the honor to be able to prove a very premature version and is able to load stable the 60 games working to fps with sound.

Similar miracle has been possible thanks to the use of a VMS, since the 64 Mb of xbox remained short; and a series of optimizations made in the code. By all means not yet there is interface, neither options nor nothing… or I say to you that he is very green. I will be to You informing!

Lets hope someone ports Chankast to Xbox too ...
