Company held 'respectful' meeting with the rebellious coder

Engineers at Sony Computer Entertainment invited George Hotz, the infamous PS3 hacker, to its US publishing headquarters in California to discuss system security, according to a new report.
Sony, which filed a lawsuit against Hotz in January 2011, met with the young hacker four months later, in May, to discuss how he broke past well-protected PS3 security technologies.

In the intervening months between the lawsuit and the “respectful” meeting, Sony had compromised about 105 million PSN and SOE accounts following an abysmal security failure that was exploited by an unknown hacker.
The two hacking incidents are not thought to be directly linked, though Anonymous – the online group suspected to be responsible for the PSN and SOE hacks – had previously declared it was attacking Sony executives and security in response to the firm’s lawsuit against Hotz.
Sony said it invited Hotz to its Foster City headquarters because the firm is “always interested in exploring all avenues to better safeguard our systems and protect consumers”.

Winners to receive the opportunity to 'visit a leading studio' and have their project developed at Abertay University

Bafta has opened submissions for its annual Young Game Designers competition.
The contest, eligible for 11-to-16 year olds, will see aspiring developers compete to create the best game in in one of two categories.

The Concept Award will be for designers who have an idea for a new game and can detail the characters, game world and its playability.
Applicants can also enter the Game-making Award, which will be presented by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.
Contestants can either work on their own, or in teams of up to three, with the top three entrants in both categories invited to attend the British Academy Children’s Awards in November.

Blur, Split/Second and Motorstorm 'are too niche for the modern market', says Sumo's Gareth Wilson

Racing games need a new generation of consoles to be successful again, Sumo Digital’s chief designer has claimed.
Speaking to Oxm, Gareth Wilson said that it was difficult to push racing games at the end of a console cycle as they needed new technology to improve titles and entice new customers.

"We need a new console," said Wilson. "Racing games always do well when a new console comes out, and you do a new physics engine and improved graphics.
“But towards the end of a console cycle it's always quite hard to push racing games, I think, because if you've Dirt 1 do you need Dirt 3? If you've got Project Gotham Racing 3, do you need PGR4? I'm not so sure. It really relies on technology, the racing genre. Maybe more than other genres.”
Wilson highlighted the example of PGR3, and claimed that elements such as a fully modelled Ferrari dashboard were impossible to do on previous hardware, and gives a sense of what could be done on the next generation of consoles.

The pejoratively branded 'b-team' could now become series' driving force

Activision has lifted the lid on its newest juggernaut in the lucrative Call of Duty series.
Call of Duty Black Ops 2 is in production at California studio Treyarch – which built the original title – and is set for release in November.

Its publisher Activision has launched the websitehours before the game’s worldwide reveal, either as an attempt to plug leaks in the media or due to error.
Game screenshots, videos and news pages on the Call of Duty Black Ops 2 website are not operational at the time of going to press.
The most recent Call of Duty title, Modern Warfare 3, was developed across four Activision studios.

'The window for release and success of software on the platform ended in 2009', claims indie publisher

Game sales on Nintendo's digital platform WiiWare are almost non-existent, claims the founder of indie publisher Nicalis.
Speaking to GoNintendo, Tyrone Rodriguez said that he was forced into cancelling Nigoro’s side-scrolling game La-Mulana after two years of development because of the tiny customer-base on the system.

He added that the game had also failed to pass Nintendo’s submission process in the US and EU, despite already having DLC in place.
“The decision to cancel publishing of La-Mulana was a tough call, but waiting two years for Nigoro to finish development has made it near impossible to sell sufficient units on Wii,” said Rodriguez.
“The WiiWare market has a fraction of the players from 2008. The window for release and success of software on the platform ended in 2009 and took a very steep decline. Players have moved onto other digital download platforms.”

Interim CEO Patrick Bach weighs ups and downs of next-gen used game block

A next-generation used games block would be a mixed bag for consumers, says Dice interim CEO and executive producer Patrick Bach.
"Yeah, I heard about that. I think that can be a win and a loss," he told CVG.

"I think it's a loss if it only means that you will be able to get fewer games for the same money. But in theory you could see it the other way, because a lot of companies making games today are struggling based on second-hand sales."
Bach thinks that though customers would lose out on price-point, they would benefit from an industry more capable of taking finacial risks.
"If you think there are too few new IPs on the market, no one can take that risk if their game is at risk of being resold too many times."

While Mind Candy's Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo breaks records on the Nintendo DS
Prototype 2 might have been the only new release to make it in to the UK top 40 this week, but it made it count by going straight to number 1.
The debut knocked last week's top title, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, down to number 6, but couldn't shake FIFA Street from 2 or FIFA 12 from 3.
Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo also gets an honourable mention for becoming a record breaker this week, with its 15 weeks at the top of the Nintendo DS chart making it the longest running number 1 on the format. The previous record holder was Dr Kawashima's Brain Training.
"This is the first video game we've ever published at Mind Candy so we're delighted and amazed by how well it has done. We're lucky to have such a passionate fanbase of Moshi players" said Michael Acton Smith, Mind Candy CEO.

Iwata talks regional sales, Wii U predictions, selling hardware at a loss and digital downloads

    Nintendo

    www.nintendo-europe.com

Nintendo revealed its first full-year loss in company history yesterday, with the business $531 million in the red after a poor launch for the 3DS, declining Wii sales, a weak Christmas period and tough exchange rates due to the strong Yen.
Speaking in an investor presentation following the results, president Satoru Iwata offered his analysis of the current home and handheld video game market from Nintendo's perspective, looking at the key markets of Japan, the US and Europe, as well as addressing future strategies for 3DS, Wii U and digital growth.
    Chart analysis
2012 Hardware Units Sales in Japan

Japan is Nintendo's strongest market. Hardware units sales for the first quarter of the year have been impressive for the 3DS with only the PlayStation 3 a noticeable competitor. Sony's PS Vita by comparison looks in poor shape, being outsold in the handheld market by its predecessor the PSP.
"We believe this is a sign that the Nintendo 3DS has a strong presence in the market," noted Iwata. "On the other hand, since this year started, we have seen the Wii sales quickly losing momentum. In the home console market this year, Sony's PlayStation 3 remains in good shape," he added.
Of the top 20 software titles in Japan so far this year, 15 are for Nintendo systems, 13 of which are 3DS games and five of those first-party releases.
Over in the US the story is quite different, with Iwata acknowledging that Microsoft's Xbox 360 has maintained hardware sales momentum in 2012, although it does not seem to be due to sales of the Kinect peripheral.
"Some Kinect titles fared well in the chart towards the end of last year, but it seems that this momentum did not continue, so Kinect is probably not responsible for the Xbox 360's current sales growth," he said.
Kinect is probably not responsible for the Xbox 360's current sales growth
    Satoru Iwata, Nintendo

There were eight Xbox 360 games in the top 20 best-sellers for 2012 according to NPD, compared to six from Sony and six from Nintendo. Iwata added that sales of the 3DS in the region are below expectations.
"Considering that the U.S. market is two or three times the size of its Japanese equivalent, I believe that the sales of the Nintendo 3DS in the U.S. are far below the level that it could potentially reach." There's also still a decent market for the original DS, according to Nintendo.
UK software sales Jan-March 2012, highlighting the dominance of Xbox 360 games.

In Europe it's all change again, with Sony showing the strongest in terms of hardware sales according to Nintendo estimates. "Although the Nintendo 3DS has recently increased its weekly sales, it is far from a satisfactory level," he offered.
Breaking down European regions, Nintendo noted that of the top 20 best-selling titles in 2012, Nintendo claims ten hits in Germany, and nine each in Spain and France. There are six Nintendo titles in the UK charts, but "the UK market is virtually the only market in Europe where the Xbox 360 has a strong presence," according to Iwata. "In fact, it dominates the PlayStation 3, and it is in stark contrast to the other European markets."
    Sales forecasts for 2012
Sales forecasts for Nintendo hardware/software. Forecasts for Wii U and original Wii are combined.

Nintendo has said it expects to return to a profit in the current financial year, but disappointingly isn't yet breaking out sales of the original Wii and Wii U, due for sale before Christmas 2012. Instead it has combined sales in its forecasts, expecting 10.5 million combined Wii unit sales and 70 million combined Wii software sales.
"We think that the software sales of the Nintendo DS and the Wii will rather significantly decrease due to the small number of games scheduled in this fiscal year," said Iwata.
"We don't anticipate that the software sales of the Wii U can compensate for the decrease in those of the Wii because the Wii U will be launched as late as in the holiday season and then the total unit sales of the Wii U will be limited in this fiscal year. This is one of the reasons our business performance inevitably fluctuates when we change platforms."
Software sales forecasts for the Wii U and the 3DS include those to be downloaded via digital distribution but exclude Virtual Console software and download-only software.
Sales of the 3DS are expected to climb to 18.5 million with game sales of 73 million.
    Selling at a loss
Speaking of the 3DS, Iwata quite simply stated that in the first half of the financial year Nintendo intends to "get out of the situation that we sell the hardware below cost," following last year's poor results. Software must remain evergreen said Iwata, rolling out a well-worn list of Nintendo franchises, before admitting that last year suffered with a large gap between 3DS releases "which delayed the beginning of the year-end sales season and we eventually missed our goal of the sales forecast."

Korean electronics giant LG has announced that it will not be making any further Windows Phone 7 handsets.
It came to the decision having claimed that “the total unit of Windows Phone sold in the global market is not a meaningful figure”.
Instead the company will press ahead with its future plans for Android handsets, although WPCentral does add that LG intends to “continue research and development efforts” on Microsoft’s format.
Samsung, HTC and key Microsoft partner Nokia remain as the main WP7 partners pushing forwards.
