On the surface, the 10th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards (IAAs) seemed a lot like the Ninth Annual Interactive Achievement Awards. Same venue (The Joint at Las Vegas' Hard Rock Hotel & Casino), same host (actor/comedian Jay Mohr), and same elbow-rubbing with industry celebs.

However, this year's coinciding D.I.C.E. Summit, put on by the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences (AIAS), has grown, and in turn so has the IAA show. This year's awards show was of particular interest, as it is the first AIAS awards show to include all three new game consoles.

Journalist Heather Chaplin interviews AIAS president Joseph Olin on the red carpet.
The awards show went off with just one technical hitch, which was filled with Mohr's semi-humorous tales of his cat fornicating. But as far as awards shows go, the AIAS pulled off a winner. Though there were plenty of people pulling for their own creations, the crowd, made up of industry big wigs and not the randoms off the street like Spike TV's Video Game Awards, clearly appreciated a worthy winner.

The real fight to watch was between two of the most critically acclaimed games of the year--Epic Games' Gears of War and Bethesda Softworks' The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Oblivion took home the top prize at December's Spike TV Video Game Awards, both were matched up tonight for Game of the Year, and both will go head-to-head at the GDC Awards in March.

Epic Games' Cliff Bleszinski and Michael Capps accept Game of the Year honors in Las Vegas.
Over the course of the show, it was a dominating performance by Gears of War, which walked away with eight awards. The shooter took the very first two awards, prompting host Mohr to say, "Let's not get all sour after we're here for one-and-a-half hours for Gears of War. Don't get pissy. Just get a cocktail."

Gears won the awards for Outstanding Character Performance - Male, Outstanding Achievement in Animation, Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction, Outstanding Achievement in Online Play, Outstanding Achievement in Visual Engineering, Action/Adventure Game of the Year, Console Game of the Year, and Overall Game of the Year.

Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime stands guard over the Lifetime Achievement Awards handed out earlier in the night to Minoru Arakawa and Howard Lincoln.
One of the more surprising victors of the evening was Nintendo's pack-in Wii game, Wii Sports. If a category dabbled in innovation or game play, Wii Sports grabbed it. The game took home the awards for Outstanding Achievement in Game Play Engineering, Outstanding Achievement in Game Design, and Outstanding Innovation in Gaming.

However the award for best reception of an award goes to Cliffy B, accepting the prize for Gears' win for Outstanding Achievement in Online Play. The prize was presented by Sony president of worldwide studios Phil Harrison, and when Gears was announced as the winner, many an eye widened in the crowd.

Sid Meier introduces the Hall of Fame award, given this year to M.U.L.E. designer Dani Bunten. Dani's two sons accept the award on their father's behalf.
As Cliff accepted the award, he made sure to mention how robust the Xbox 360's online capabilities were--a not-too-veiled dig at Harrison's PlayStation 3. Harrison took the jab in good humor even when Cliff left the stage without an acknowledgement to Harrison, and chuckled as he approached the microphone to present the next award. These are the moments that make award shows like this. ...

Sony Worldwide Studios boss Phil Harrison has shown off a few PS3 demos at the DICE Summit and hinted that we won't have to wait long before we're able to download content in the background like we can on Xbox 360.

The absence of such a feature has been a bit of a sore point for US and Japanese early adopters. "Some of you will notice that we have background downloading now," Harrison pointed out during a demo of the SingStar "SingStore", according to Kotaku's transcript.

Sony UK was not able to immediately clarify when a firmware update adding background downloading would be made available, but it follows that if Harrison's prepared to show it off in public then it must be due fairly soon. Perhaps even before next month's European launch.

Harrison also responded to questions about other areas of Sony's online service, dismissing suggestions that Sony couldn't compete directly with Xbox 360 for features because its service is offered for free.

"While it may be free to the consumer, we know there are revenue streams for us to earn in other ways. We have a number of things that we'll announce shortly that will add clarity to that statement," he explained.

Oh, and Super Rub'a'Dub - a downloadable game based on Harrison's 3D ducks demo - is due on the PS3 Store "in a few weeks". It's fully tilt controlled, and has been previously confirmed as a downloadable launch title for the PS3 in Europe.

Super Mario World and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link are Nintendo's two additions to Virtual Console in Europe today.

The much loved platform and much never-played RPG are up for 800 and 500 Wii points respectively.

They're joined by Turbografx-16's Vigilante, in case you're hungry for more, which is there for 600 Wii points.

You can find them all in the Wii Shop, listed under latest additions. There are now 46 titles available via Virtual Console in Europe, and Nintendo says more than 1.5 million games have been downloaded overall, worldwide.

Bethesda's Pete Hines has been talking about the developer's hit RPG series Oblivion and the numerous console versions to Shack News. Hines says that although the company would like to get the game on Wii, the hardware's not really up to it.

"This time around we did Oblivion and again we designed a game that's really going to push some limits and would do the things we thought next-gen consoles might be able to do. When 360 dev kits were available, we did it on them because it was available. It's not really going to run on a Wii for example, but if it could we would put it there."

D3Publisher is bringing another Bejewelled-influenced puzzle game to DS that incorporates a story-driven RPG mode to the experience.

Set in a land known as Etheria in an age of warlords, Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords places you in the role of a sword-wielding warrior who must save Etheria from evil.

You move your character around an overworld map by tapping the stylus on the various village locations. You don't explore them in 3D - you speak to people, visit shops and acquire missions all via menu screens.

When you encounter a battle, the Bejewelled puzzle kicks in. You take turns with your opponent to swap icons on a grid to line up three or more identical icons in a row. When you do, they disappear and the points earned count as damage to your opponent.

Conversely, if you can't be arsed with all that RPG stuff, you can get straight down to the puzzle action with the Instant Action option.

Mixing RPG with a puzzler is an interesting way of refreshing an already used-and-abused puzzle concept. But can you handle ANOTHER Bejewelled game?

Puzzle Quest will hit DS and PSP on March 16.

There was a flurry of commotion on the official Gears of War message board yesterday, after one user claimed to see the motto "2nd Emergence Q4 2007" on Cliffy 'man of style' B's user profile.

Obviously the entire internet (well, the part of it that enjoys chainsawing people in the face) exploded at the thought of playing Marcus Fenix's second chapter this side of 2008, but alas it was all too good to be true.

The rumour was shot down after users spotted that the Cliffy B in question was not in fact the real Cliffy B, but a fake, less well-groomed version with an 'I' in place of the 'l' in his username. Cheeky bugger.

Virtua Fighter 5 is not only the latest in Sega's huge beat-'em-up series, but it also looks to be one of the PS3's best-looking games so far.

Just look at the high-res awesomeness of this game, particularly the lighting in some of sunset scenes and the super-sharp textures. It's going to look sweet running in 1080p on a nice 50" HDTV.

VF5 will release on PS3 in the US on February 20, and land on the day of launch - March 23 - in Europe.

Sony Worldwide Studios president Phil Harrison has confirmed that a sequel to last year's blob-rolling PSP adventure LocoRoco is currently in the works.

Fielding questions at the D.I.C.E. summit in Las Vegas yesterday, Harrison said that he was "recently playing LocoRoco's next version," in response to a question asking what he was doing recently, (better than telling everyone you've been sitting in your pants watching Neighbours, we suppose).

No more than that was said on the LocoRoco sequel, leaving gameplay details and the target platform up in the air. After the rubber duck PlayStation Network news though, we're wondering if LocoRoco 2 will also crop-up on the download service. We'll let you know if our hunch proves right.
