This fresh batch of images from Wii-bound Sonic adventure, Sonic and the Secret Rings, gives us more views of the spiky one's towering dinosaur enemies, and hints at the sort of high-speed platforming we'll be racing through when the game's released next spring.

With a spiny T-Rex-like beast lunging over Sonic's path and a stampede of newly spotted Triceratops-ish dinos hurtling after him, we're guessing that Secret Rings will see us outrunning, dodging and hiding from these extinction-defying giants - possibly in chase sequences like the Killer Whale sprint in Sonic Adventure.

Also, with Sonic atop a drifting log in some of the images, expect more Sonic Adventure comparisons. Both Adventure games featured some brillo snowboarding moments (or streetboarding in SA2's case) so we're looking forward to some log-mounted rapid riding from Sonic and the Secret Rings.

Aye Chihuahua hombre! We've got a sombrero full of hot-like-tamales shots from the upcoming PSP combo-clocking action shooter, Chili Con Carnage - jiggle your jalapenos to the images tab above for a butchers at the whole spicy selection.

Following in the footsteps of the console and PC title, Total Overdose, Chili Con Carnage sees Ramiro 'Ram' Cruz come swaggering back through the saloon doors for more gringo-fuelled gun-play in the Mexican border city of Los Toros.

Rather than knocking out a handheld port of Total Overdose, developer Deadline assured us in a recent question and answer session that Chili Con Carnage would be a "reinvention" of the original, with reworked story, level elements and gameplay mechanics all squeezed in alongside three brand new modes.

Out early in 2007, if you're looking for frantic, fully portable shootouts, we suggest you keep an eye on Chili Con Carnage as it promises to be a tasty burrito blast of action.

While the Xbox 360 edition of Defender didn't arrive in the traditional early-morning time frame of Xbox Live Arcade Wednesday releases, things are by no means quiet on the console's Marketplace today. A host of new content hit the downloadable service today, starting with a demo for Electronic Arts' Superman Returns.

Weighing in at more than 905MB, the Superman Returns demo gives gamers a taste of the open-world adventure set to ship to retail next week. Xbox Live Gold members can now download the demo for free, while Xbox Live director of programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb said on his blog that Xbox Live Silver subscribers will be able to take the Man of Steel for a spin on November 22. A "Man of Steel" theme is also available to download for 150 points ($1.88).

Backing up the Superman content is a slate of other offerings from Electronic Arts. First, there are three new cars up for Need for Speed Carbon, with each one running customers 80 points ($1), and a pack of FIFA 07 Pitch Crests for 100 points ($1.25) that will let gamers put their favorite team logos on their in-game practice arenas.

There's also new downloadable content for Epic Games' shooter Gears of War, but not in the form fans might have hoped for. For 100 Microsoft Points ($1.25), gamers can download BradyGames' Angry Titan Strategy to defeat the game's Corpser boss. ...

Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto has revealed that Nintendo initially intended its next-gen console to go on sale for under US $100 - but certain features pushed up the price.

Speaking in an interview with Business Week Miyamoto said, "Originally, I wanted a machine that would cost $100. My idea was to spend nothing on the console technology so all the money could be spent on improving the interface and software.

"If we hadn't used NAND flash memory and other pricey parts, we might have succeeded," he added.

At first Nintendo "didn't think it was possible to build a powerful machine for less than 50,000 Yen" (330 Euro), and there were concerns about power consumption, cooling systems and boot-up time.

In the end, "We had to compromise on graphics and give up on a powerful chip," Miyamoto conceded.

"Many of our employees initially wanted high-definition graphics. But they agreed with us that graphics wouldn't matter if the games weren't fun to play." However, Miyamoto observed, the Wii is "much faster" than the GameCube.

He explained that much of the thinking behind the Wii came from trying to imagine what would convince mothers to buy a console for their kids - "We talked about basic concepts and goals, not about the technical specifications of the console.

"Our goal was to come up with a machine that moms would want - easy to use, quick to start up, not a huge energy drain, and quiet while it was running," Miyamoto said. ...
