Nintendo of Europe marketing director Dawn Paine has told GamesIndustry.biz that the company is confident the Wii will be a sell-out success this Christmas.

Nintendo plans to launch its largest ever sampling campaign in the UK this month, with a two month tour set to run from November 10 until January 13.

The tour will visit more than 60 locations across the UK and Ireland, and Nintendo intends to give one million consumers the chance to try out the Wii by the time the console launches on December 8.

"To really understand how fantastic Wii is, you really need to get your hands on it and play it. It's that straightforward," Paine told GI.biz.

"It's such a departure from anything else. It's not just necessarily about the graphics - it is just much more about the gameplay and understanding how the interface works."

The tour will focus on key mainstream and family destinations, including shopping centres such as Bluewater, the Birmingham Bullring and Sheffield's Meadow Hall. Consumers will also be able to try out the Wii at events like the Good Food Show, the Ideal Home Exhibition and Glasgow's Irn Bru Carnival.

There are two ways consumers will be able to try out the Wii. Firstly, a series of modular sets have been created to look like fully furnished living rooms and bedrooms, into which people are free to walk and start playing. Nintendo will also supply a series of "busking units" which can easily be unloaded and moved around.

"From a sampling perspective, because the tour is going to be so broad, we're going to be in locations where we're engaging with different types of consumer," Paine explained, adding that retailers have so far been "thrilled" with what they've seen of Nintendo's marketing plans.

"If we're in a shopping mall where there are maybe ten different retailers, once people have played it and realised how great it is, then obviously it gives them an opportunity to pick up a sale on the day."

When asked if the Wii is likely to sell out this Christmas, Paine replied, "I'm absolutely sure it will," adding, "Pre-orders are looking very, very healthy."

The Wii will launch in the UK alongside more than 20 games - just three of which will be first party titles. But according to Paine, "Our point of view is not to get too parochial as to whether it's first or third party, because obviously we've got a plethora of third party games there as well. We believe we've got a really great line-up across both first and third party."

Nor is Nintendo concerned with competing against the Xbox 360 - the Wii's main rival for Christmas cash now that the European launch of PlayStation 3 has been delayed until March.

"We don't want to sound arrogant or complacent about this, but from our point of view, we're just such a different entity and experience from anything else in the marketplace that we don't really see anything else as competition," Paine said.

"Because our product has got such broad mainstream appeal, we're sure that we're going to sell through all of our Christmas stock. We know that retail are so enthused about Wii that we're pretty much going to be taking over retail at Christmas. We're just really confident that Wii's going to be the huge hit."

But what about next year, when Sony's new console is also on the shelves - is Wii likely to be the market leader come Christmas 2007?

"I believe so, yes," said Paine. "We're confident that Wii is going to take the UK market by storm, so when I get my crystal ball out, yes, that's what we would see happening next year." ...

Electronic Arts CFO Warren Jenson has warned that PlayStation 3 units will be hard to get hold of in the US this Christmas following the console's launch on November 17.

In a conference call Jenson said, "We're thinking that with PlayStation 3 in North America, the [shipment] range is probably 500,000 to 800,000." Sony has previously stated it plans to ship 2 million consoles to the US and Japan by the end of the year.

Jenson observed that the middle of EA's predicted range is "approximately what Microsoft sold last year on the Xbox 360" - adding, "I think from a consumer standpoint, it’s probably going to be as challenging to find a PlayStation 3 this year as it was to find an Xbox 360 last year."

EA also predicted that between 900,000 and 1.4 million Nintendo Wii units will have shipped in North America by the end of 2006. The publishing giant put the figure for Europe at between 200,000 and 900,000 units. ...

That wireless Guitar Hero controller sounds nice then, eh? Doesn't it? Unfortunately, it's starting to look like an Xbox 360 version of it is unlikely.

That's according to RedOctane's Bryan Lam, who told website eToychest that Microsoft's proprietary wireless controller technology is not available to third party manufacturers "at the moment".

In other words... Well, in fact, in Lam's words: "until they allow us to [use it], we aren't able to [do a wireless 360 controller]". Well, some of them were his words.

That means, obviously, that if what you want's a wireless Guitar Hero controller, you're going to need to buy one of the PlayStation 2 ones when it comes out in the US this month (at a cost of US$ 59.99).

As for whether we're getting them over here at all, the situation remains unclear, with a RedOctane spokesperson offering "no comment" when we asked about it.

Fortunately, Guitar Hero II itself is due out in the US on 7th November and over here on 24th November, so you can at least look forward to that. ...

EA may have dropped enough hints in its investor conference call this week to cater to every taste - from the Sims and SimCity to Road Rash, Rings and Black - but in the more immediate future the news was less positive, with both Crysis and Army of Two experiencing delays.

Crytek's first-person shooter Crysis - one of the most hotly tipped PC titles of the next 12 months - will now be released in the 12 months following the end of the present fiscal year. In other words, sometime from April onwards.

PS3 and 360 co-op curiosity Army of Two - in development at EA's Montreal studio - has also been moved back to the fiscal year beginning April 2007, although since it was always down for release in 2007 anyway it's probably not fair to describe it as a delay. Oh well. Call it karma. ...

Apple has just busted out an 8GB (PRODUCT) RED Special Edition iPod nano to appease your storage lust. The new version costs $249, just like its black 8GB counterpart, and Apple will be donating the same $10 of each sale to the Global Fund that it's currently forking over for 4GB versions. Not too bad for a bit of iPod hawterness you were planning on nabbing anyways, right?

It's been a long, arduous trip prying our way into Microsoft's inner workings this past year, but we finally got a chance to sit down with all three Zunes and get some serious play time with the damned things. It may be a little early to give final impressions, but let's just say what we saw is a very decent start. The player was responsive and fast; all functions worked flawlessly and without delay. The software and storefront has a lot of new, unique features that make browsing and finding music a more engrossing, enjoyable experience. Obviously Apple is the game to beat -- and a tough game at that -- but something tells us this little player's got some fight in it. We're not going to talk too much about the device itself, namely because we'd rather show you; later today expect a walkthrough of every nook and cranny of the device, and a demo of its wireless functionality. But in the mean time, click on for loads more high res shots of the Zune family, software, Marketplace, and, um, executive briefcase.

Flicking through this mass of new Banana Blitz screenshots, you will see everything from tilt-platform levels in a variety of environments, various bosses to a wide selection of the 50 minigames in action.

It's all good stuff, and with all those great-looking mini games, Monkey Ball will hopefully provide four-player laughs long after the five games in Wii Sports get ultra boring. Monkey Ball fans will get their fix of ball-rolling action on December 8, alongside the launch of the Wii.

A new trailer shown at the Nintendo World Tour in Japan has revealed that Fox McCloud, the lead character from the much loved Star Fox series, will appear in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, in development for Wii.

Fox isn't a new character to the Smash Bros. series, having already appeared in the N64 and GameCube editions, but his absence from the lengthy E3 trailer lead to suspicions that he might not be included.

The highly anticipated Nintendo all-star brawler is due for release in 2007. The latter half of the year, we're guessing. ...

We've been sent some nice visual diagrams and a bit of blurb this morning on Virtua Tennis 3's freshly announced employment of the PS3 controller's tilt action.

You can use the tilt action to move your player (tilt the controller forward to move a sports star forward, left to move them left etc.) and also to perform a variety shots and serves - in a similar way to a tennis racquet, and without using the buttons or analogue sticks, explains Sega.

Will it be as good as Wii Sports? Let the debate begin!
