Now that we have the Virtual Console launch lists for the US, Europe, and Japan, it's time to compare and contrast how each region fared. To no one's surprise, Japan has every single game being released in the other regions and more, with the exception of Bomberman '93 (Japan owners get the "vastly disparate" 1994 edition).

Take note of the publishers found in the US and European regions: with the exception of Tecmo's Solomon's Keys for the NES, all games are first-party titles from Hudson, Nintendo, or Sega. International licensing troubles, perhaps?

Looking at the first-party titles, US and Europe are missing out on quite a few high-profile games: Super Mario Bros (NES), Super Mario World and Zelda: Link to the Past (SNES). In fact, the only Mario title coming to US / Europe at launch (Donkey Kong notwithstanding) is Mario Bros., otherwise known as that multiplayer minigame included in all the GBA Mario remakes.

We understand Nintendo giving the much-less-popular Fire Emblem to Japan only, but why delay Nintendo's flagship titles of the past? Does Nintendo think it's going to prove something by launching the Wii outside of Japan with as little of Mario's presence possible?

One more note: UK-based Rare's Donkey Kong Country is coming to Japan and Europe but is conspicuously absent from the US roster. With Microsoft being a US-based company and the new owners of Rare, the conspiracy theorist in us thinks there might be some funny going on. We've sent off a few questions to Nintendo and Rare and will let you know what we find out. ...

While praising Wii's prospects as an industry disrupter, DFC Intelligence says Nintendo shouldn't hinge Wii's chances of success solely on its controller. Really? You mean to tell us that games will determine its success? Analyst David Cole also counsels the console to follow in the footsteps of its popular portable brother, the DS, that merely supplements gameplay with touch controls. Nintendo, we hope you're taking notes!

From the article: "So much emphasis has been put on the new control system that it often seems the controller is the platform. From DFC Intelligence's perspective it would probably not be a good thing for Nintendo if the Wii is defined mainly by its controller. The risk is that consumers have fun with the Wii controller for a few months, but the fad passes and they move back to their tried-and-true gameplay methods on a competing system."

In all seriousness, the report rightfully views the system as an "evolution" in console gaming rather than the promoted "revolution," because the latter implies a totally broken system that current industry growth contradicts. But to restate what Nintendo has said all along as its goal (heighten fun in games patterned after the DS)? That's like stealing your watch and telling you the time. So how about analyzing the more difficult execution process? ...

And we thought Zelda: Twilight Princess was a tease - Super Smash Bros Brawl is still cruelly without a definite date for its arrival next year and developer and publisher Nintendo is still being as tight-lipped about its super smashing game as ever.

This pair of new screens doesn't really make the wait any easier: Link, Pikachu, Mario and, er, that bloke from Kid Icarus together at last! It's the kind of image that will haunt us until we finally get a hands-on with the title.

With its creator promising no gesture craziness that doesn't add to the fun - so you won't be swapping hammering buttons for furiously waggling Wii-motes - we're interested to see exactly how SSBB will make use of Wii.

While the grown-up desktop-dwelling Airborne might be grounded for many more months, the pocket-dwelling PSP edition known as Medal of Honor Heroes is getting closer to its objective with every passing day. So to while away those weeks of waiting between now and its 17 November launch date, why not indulge your irises with the clip concealed by the movie tab above?

A click there will reveal just how this, the first PSP version of MoH, trawls through the series' history to create a greatest hits of its Brylcreemed warriors and weapons. But, while you reprise the roles of Lieutenant Jimmy Patterson, Sergeant John Baker and Lieutenant William Holt, you also get to see a whole host of new locations and levels including Holland and Italy.

And continuing this mixture of the old and the new, there will be a 32-person-strong online option that at the same time allows you to collect and unlock 20 classic characters from the games many variants and versions.

But plenty of new features have also been packed into the 15 missions and maps so there is an ad-hoc WiFi mode that allows eight gamers to jump into quickfire battle or to join in a 16-aside deathmatch, if you have a nearby PC to use as a game server.

We've held the melons, spun the cherries and finally Rainbow Six Vegas has paid out big time with a whole host of new footage, images and details.

It's all here from shooting out gunmen from behind a bullet-proof shield, exploring levels three times the size of Rainbow Six 3, swearing and dead terrorists - lots of dead terrorists. And what's more, developer Ubisoft's own Maxime Beland is on hand to explain everything.

You have a choice. Do you click on the images tab first or head over to the movies one? Well, which one depends on how old you are because the two movies have a 16 age-rating on them, mainly due to some saucy language. So here is the rule, if you are under 16, stick with the screenshots, over that age and you are free to watch both of the clips. Okay? Good.

With Rainbow Six Vegas' Xbox 360 and PC releases nearly on us already - and a PS3 version planned for the future - expect to see much more from this stunning shooter very soon indeed.

As surprising as it may sounds, ABIResearch's latest poll says 58% of current iPod users said they were "somewhat likely" or "extremely likely" to pick a Zune player over any other player? WTF? We tried to take a look at the actual survey results, but realized they cost $3,000. Yeah, no, that's ok. We'll pass.

The survey also says that the WiFi peer to peer sharing doesn't seem to be a big draw, and that it's critical that Microsoft differentiates itself in some way (apparently not in WiFi sharing). Nevertheless, it's hard to believe that 58% of users would say they'd pick the Zune over the iPod. And without the actual survey results, we can't say anything for sure. ...

Gears of War, is about to launch (November 7), and Mad Catz is getting in on the action with a few interesting console accessories. The first is the faceplate plus "Console Skinz", which are graphic coverings for the side of your 360 shown above. This is $29.99.

Then there's four limited-edition faceplates that you can swap in and out, each of which are $19.99. You can see what they look like after the jump. Apparently Best Buy, Circuit City and GameStop are all getting a unique faceplate. That's a pretty cool Pokemon-ish idea.

The third item is a "Console Crate", which is essentially a cushioned box for your 360 in case you wanted to take it to your grandparents place and show them what a gory next-gen shooter looks like. This is $59.99, and you can check that after the jump as well.

All of these officially go on sale today. ...

This week's Fall System Update for Xbox 360s went very smoothly...for 99 percent of console owners. For the remaining one percent, the past day has been nothing but a next-gen nightmare.

The update, which was released yesterday, added several new features to the Xbox 360's dashboard and the console itself, including 1080p resolution support. But for some Xbox 360 owners, it simply turned their consoles into a $400 paperweight.

Many among the Xbox modding scene believed the update crashed supped-up Xbox 360s, and was a message from Microsoft to modders to stop tinkering with the hardware. Microsoft weren't exactly forthcoming about the problem, but today the company broke its silence.

"A small percentage of consoles were affected negatively by the fall update (less than one percent have reported issues). We’re working with those affected to get them back up and running, whether that be by providing another console, or fixing their existing console. We’re committed to resolving this issue."

Microsoft expects to have the problem solved within the next 12-24 hours, according to the Microsoft's marketing team's Gamerscore Blog. Microsoft urges anyone in North America encountering problems with the update to call technical support at 1-800-4-MY-XBOX. ...

Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime wants to share some good news and some bad news. The good news is that by the end of the year Nintendo expects to ship 4 million consoles. The bad news is, they still expect to sell out. From the article:
"Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime hyped up the console launch, saying, 'Because of demand, we're urging shoppers not to get complacent. The level of demand we're seeing goes beyond the ordinary. Retailers are telling us a significant fraction of customers pre-ordering Wii are nontraditional gamers...' The company expects to ship 6 million Wii units globally by the end of March 2007, on par with Sony's worldwide shipment targets for PS3. Microsoft has sold 6 million Xbox 360 units to date since its launch in late November 2005, and hopes to sell 10 million by the end of the calendar year."
So, fewer units than the analysts wanted. Still an impressive number. ...

Gamasutra reports on the three versions of Halo 3 you can now preorder from Gamestop and EB. Aside from the 'normal' edition ($5), you can also spring for the collector's edition ($10) with videos and such. For a down-payment of $25, you can pre-order the 'Legendary' edition. From the article:
"The Legendary Edition will come on four discs and will include all the content of the Collector's Edition plus unspecified extras and a Master Chief helmet replica. The release date for all three versions of the game is listed as November 1st, 2007 - although no official announcement on a date has been made by Microsoft and the date is likely a placeholder by the stores."
