Looks like all the bellyaching over the price of Sony's PlayStation 3 has done some good. Sony exec Ken Kutaragi just sent jaws to the floor over at Tokyo Game Show with an announced price cut of the 20GB PS3 base unit from ¥62,790 to ¥49,980 in Japan. Closer to home, we'd be looking at a move from about $538 to $428 (looking at current exchange rates) representing a drop of some 20% when the PS3 hits later this year, or uh, early next if the cut applies across the board. Not exactly cheap when looking at the Wii or Xbox 360, but that Cell processor, Blu-ray Disc player, and HDMI 1.3 output supporting Deep Color will certainly draw a premium. Yeah, you read that correctly, Ken announced HDMI support too, making the 20GB PS3 one fine Hi-Def movie machine on the cheap. Hoozah!

Update: Price reduction confirmed for Japan only. Waiting on rest-of-world price cuts, if any. ...

After Apple launched the not-exactly-6G iPod at the "It's Showtime" event, we had plenty of fun dissecting the new nano and handling the appropriately dubbed 5.5G iPod, but we couldn't help but notice how the dear ole U2 iPod was apparently uninvited to the refresh party. Apple has finally got around to bringing the long-standing "special edition" 'Pod to 5.5G specs, as it now sports the "brighter display," extended battery life, and a new model number (MA664LL/A) to boot. Aside from getting the 5.5G goodies (and a coupon for an "exclusive" half hour U2 video download), the real news is the price drop; while the engraved signatures of Bono and friends (and that blaze red click wheel) still demand a premium, the coinage required to pick up a 30GB U2 iPod sank from $329 to $279 -- a whole $50 -- to fall more in line with its standard $249 sibling. For a second there, we just figured the U2-branded 'Pod was stuck in a moment it couldn't get out of. ...

While it's no mystery Half Life 2 is being brought to Xbox 360 and PS3, there is a chance that the prequel to the PC smash could follow suite be remade.

When Gamespy asked about whether he'd remake HL, Valve's Director of Marketing Doug Lombardi answered that "It'd be cool to have Half-Life running with new visuals on the Source Engine if we wanted to freshen it up. I suppose I'll clarify by saying that it's not on the boards right now, but it's not out of the question." Of course Valve has already breathed new life into the old game, re-releasing the original with a Source-tweak when the sequel hit our shelves two years ago.

The company is also exploring the possibility of bringing the Steam distribution service to next-gen consoles. Lombardi claimed that due to increased hard disk sizes, "It's technically possible. There are just two catches. Console owners hold the key to a full-sized game on their system, which would be something totally new. It's unclear if it would be an open key, or how Microsoft or Sony would manage it. It's really up to them. Also, in this generation, hard drive consistency will have a high variance across the user bases. Right now, the viability of it is unclear." But he added "we like the infrastructure of Xbox Live; it's a lot like Steam".

So it's all a big fat 'maybe' from Valve at the moment. We're keeping our fingers crossed that a Source version of Gordon's first adventure could make the leap to a next-gen console near you (hopefully) soon.

Half Life 2 for Xbox 360 and PS3 should hit shelves early next year. ...

    Via the Guardian:

The publicity surrounding Chris Tarrant's marriage breakdown has led to a surge in sales for Nintendo's DS Lite console, for which the television presenter is advertising spots that include him forgetting his wedding anniversary.
Nintendo UK today said it had no plans to pull the £1m television campaign, which promotes the Dr Kawashima's Brain Training game, which has another three weeks to run.

A spokeswoman confirmed sales "jumped dramatically" last week at the height of the publicity surrounding the Who Wants to be a Millionaire? presenter's alleged extramarital affair.

"We have got no plans to change our Tarrant campaign," she said. "Sales jumped dramatically last week and we are very pleased with how the campaign is performing."

Tarrant yesterday confirmed he and his wife Ingrid had split. A statement from Mrs Tarrant is expected today.

The advert featuring Tarrant forgetting his wedding anniversary sees the presenter kicked out of the marital bedroom by his wife. He then uses the Nintendo console to help build his memory power.

Three other TV adverts with variations on the memory theme, created by agency Leo Burnett, are also playing across the main terrestrial and multichannel outlets in both daytime and prime time.

A print campaign featuring Tarrant looking thoughtful as he uses the console has finished.

A source said Nintendo had been kept aware of the situation regarding Tarrant's private life and was "very relaxed" about the situation.

"If I was Nintendo, I would be ecstatic that its profile had been raised by this," the source said.

In his statement, Tarrant said he was "deeply sorry" for the hurt he had caused his wife and children, and asked the media to give his family some privacy.

    Heres the info:

"As part of our standard and ongoing process of analyzing repair data, we recently noticed a higher than usual number of units coming in for repair. Upon further investigation, it was further discovered that the bulk of the units were isolated to a group that was part of the initial manufacturing run of the console. Returns for repair are coming in for a variety reasons and it's a higher rate than we are satisfied with. We've made the decision to comp repairs for consoles manufactured before January 1, 2006, and provide refunds to the small group of customers who have already paid for repairs."

Sony executive VP Jack Tretton said this to Gamedaily:

"What I've read widely and what I've heard from MS is, 'Yeah, we got beat last generation but that's because we were late to market and came out a year after PS2 did and that's why we got defeated and that's not going to happen again.' Yes, the PS2 was beating the Xbox 5 or 6 years ago, but now the PS2 is beating the Xbox 360... Year-to-date we've sold more hardware than they have and this past month we've sold more hardware," Tretton boasted. "So we beat them in their last generation machine and we're beating them in their current generation machine. And if I were Microsoft, the big concern I'd have is... Xbox 360 is actually doing worse than the original Xbox did."

He continued, "I think obviously our competition, the handheld devices from Nintendo and specifically in the case of the DS, we really feel like they're appealing to the same audience that Game Boy has always appealed to. And if you look at the adoption rate of the DS over the first 17 months, not only does it trail the PSP but it also trails their other platforms... They're potentially losing some of their core audience and they're not really expanding beyond that and we think we're expanding into a completely new audience as we did with PlayStation. And we'll do just what we did on PlayStation; we'll dip down to the younger consumer eventually and we'll ultimately appeal to that vastly Earth wide audience we carved out with the original PlayStation."

We queried Tretton about Nintendo's approach to broaden the market and "touch" the so-called "grey gamers" in addition to appealing to the younger set, and while it's hard to imagine a PSP in the hands of a 60-year-old for instance, Tretton believes there are more middle aged and young people playing PlayStation systems than one might think. "I think it's a good premise, but I would tell you for a fact that there are much more people in their 50s and 60s playing PlayStation platforms in terms of console, than there are playing Nintendo platforms. So I think it's conceivable just as we did with the PS1 and PS2 that we could bring in that audience."

DCEmu is here to provide the latest news and downloads from so many homebrew scenes even after they seem to die, but homebrew never dies because with the release and hacking of each new console, the homebrew released on early consoles can be played on the new consoles so that the scene recycles itself.

For over 10 years now ive been a follower of emulation and homebrew and witnessed many of the greates releases in emulation and homebrew and in that time made many friends inc some of the most gifted amateur coders and communitys second to none.

In that time ive seen the scenes for every console rise and demise, the main 3 consoles for homebrew at the moment are Nintendo DS, PSP and GP2X but will they be soon with the new consoles around the corner.

The Xbox360 could very soon see the first homebrew release and the release of the Wii and PS3 soon its going to be extremely exciting.

An homebrew scene that requires no modchips will always be popular but who knows what the hackers will be able to do to get brew working.

So Will the new next gen consoles take over or will the current consoles still rule the homebrew waves.

Xport has released a new version of PCSXBox which is a PlayStation emulator for Xbox.

    Heres whats new:

    * Added buttons for L3/R3/Mode. "Mode" only functions in Dual Shock mode.
    * Fixed Right Thumbstick X-Axis (was inverted)
    * There is now a single directory for saves. If you were using the 1.4 or 1.6 cores to play games, then you should move all of your files/directories from E:\SAVES\PCSXBOX_1.4 and E:\SAVES\PCSXBOX_1.6 to E:\SAVES\PCSXBOX
    * Implemented true Dual Shock+rumble support. From the game configuration menu change the "Controller #" to "Dual Shock" to enable it. No, Ape Escape still does not work - it's a core issue, not a Dual Shock issue.
    * You cannot use Dual Shock and multitap simultaneously.
    * Added option to enable/disable rumble for controllers 1/2
    * Added option to increase the rumble amount for controllers 1/2 if the rumble is too light.
    * Instructions included on how to set up your own website which can store/serve configuration files: upload_download_configurations_instructions.txt

Likely spurred on by the success of Nintendo's own Brain Training games, Majesco has announced the development of two new games designed to improve basic thinking skills and reaction time. Both Brain Boost: Beta Wave and Brain Boost: Gamma Wave are being developed under the consultation of Dr. Makoto Shichida, creator of the Right Brain Development Theory.

"Each Brain Boost game offers a completely different set of fun, yet challenging, brain training problems that are designed to enhance your mental acuity," said Ken Gold, vice president of Majesco. "We believe a growing number of consumers are looking for more diversified game play experiences and the Brain Boost games will help attract a new audience to the category."

Each of these games focuses on improving memory, concentration, and logical reasoning through increasingly difficult exercises in speed and accuracy. Brain Boost: Beta Wave focuses on stimulating parts of the right frontal lobe often associated with active concentration and busy thinking. Games included in Brain Boost: Beta Wave include Find a Match, Shape Recognition, Addition, Remember Sequence, and Moving Dots.

Brain Boost: Gamma Wave, on the other hand, focuses more on activities designed to stimulate higher mental activity, including perception and problem solving. Brain Boost: Gamma Wave includes training games for remembering Circumstances, Faces, Images, Numbers, and Colors.

Developed by Interchannel-Holon, both Brain Boost: Beta Wave and Brain Boost: Gamma Wave are scheduled to ship in November for a suggested price of $19.99.
